1  Economy / Securities / Re: How much interest is reasonable for you? on: October 26, 2016, 02:28:21 AM
found an article on good profit margins: http://www.investopedia.com/articles/personal-finance/093015/whats-good-profit-margin-new-business.asp

it depends on the industry. using that article as a guide, I would expect returns between 4% and 10%. The only people who get 20% interest are credit card companies and the ones who get 50% are your local loan shark and he quickly runs out of customers (or customers run out of fingers).

For an investment I would be happy with 3%. If you get rid of inflation (depending on your local currency/country) it would end up being between 1.5 and 2% which is decent.

Maybe I'm just being overly conservative or maybe I'm just happy to earn a little more than a typical savings account.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hearn's "Faith in Humanity Shaken" after People Awaken to His EVIL Plan! on: January 16, 2016, 08:38:06 AM
If bitcoin is working then its working.

Even if transactions can take 1 hour to complete the fact is they complete and they are secure. That is still an improvement on anything before bitcoin.

If the time to complete becomes an issue people can use another chain for less than 1 hour. Bitcoin will always be number one since its got the first mover advantage. The miners dont switch to another sidechain so BTC is always stronger with more hashing power.

Mike Hearn is talking bull**** as usual.

I think the key difference in the transaction completion time and the number of transactions that can be handled is the fact that all of these transactions are PUBLIC and out of the hands of VISA and MasterCard. I'll take a 1 day completion time if it means that less of my information and spending habits are in the vast databases of VISA/MasterCard/NSA/USGOVT thankyaverymuch.
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Wild guess: Mike Hearn was hired by USA govt (bonus inside) on: January 16, 2016, 07:58:49 AM
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that Wikileaks was greatly helped by Bitcoin. VISA and MasterCard and PayPal all were pressured by the US Govt to stop allowing donations to Wikileaks. It was only through Bitcoin, which hasn't been banned but is treated as a mere commodity rather than a currency, that Wikileaks has been able to survive.

This is payback by the US govt or the banksters trying to take over. We'll be seeing a subprime mortgage fiasco with their alternative blockchain if they have their way soon enough.
4  Economy / Marketplace / Re: EVE Online in-game currency (ISK) on: February 07, 2011, 07:50:37 PM
Anyone have ISK for sale? What's your rate?

I might be interested in buying some to reactivate my account Cheesy

How much ISKs do you need? I can give out maybe 10mil right now for 1.5 bitcoins.

I think for now I'll limit trades to 100 million ISK.

Has this currency hyperinflated zimbabwean style or something ?

Yep, it has to be like that because many items in the game cost a lot more money and within an hour of playing you can earn 100s of millions of that currency. You're basically printing out a crapload of money Wink
6  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Computer Science Tutoring (under 12 BTC per hour) on: January 27, 2011, 07:13:23 PM
Yeah, I think you might have used the wrong operation when getting your exchange rates there...

Yeeeah I got it backwards. I said I was a compsci tutor, not a math tutor Wink

The real rate should be higher, between 30 and 50 BTC, right?
7  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Computer Science Tutoring (under 12 BTC per hour) on: January 27, 2011, 02:32:44 PM
I don't know, there surely must be a few beginners here, no?

Or is there a good classifieds system for this? :S
8  Economy / Marketplace / Computer Science Tutoring (under 60 BTC per hour) on: January 27, 2011, 01:16:02 PM
CompSci tutoring...here's the ad I post on Craigslist usually Wink The rate can be changed to a per session rate instead of hourly if that's easier for people.

I am a computer programmer who has experience with many programming languages and can help you with object-oriented programming courses, computer science courses, and other courses for C, C++, Java, Python and other languages.

I have previously tutored students who went to the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, York University, and Seneca College. The courses covered basic computer programming concepts, object-oriented programming with Java and Python and C++, and with computer science concepts such as binary trees and recursion and threads.

I also do some programming in my spare time and have a website and blog where I discuss computer programming and various ideas related to computer software.

My rate is between $15 (~35 BTC) and $25 (~58 BTC) per hour depending on the course material you need tutoring in.

NOTE: I will *not* help you cheat or write the code for your assignments for you. I can only guide you to the solutions, I can't do them for you.

This is a great idea but I don't have any bitcoins left. It'd also be nice to have even smaller conversions like say 10mil-50mil of ISKs for some bitcoins (it's possible so why not, right?)

Click here to use a currency conversion calculator that I created on InstaCalc. The first row is when you want to convert BitCoins to ISKs, the third row is when you want to convert ISKs to BitCoins. The second and fourth rows are where you determine the exchange rate. I might write a small web application to make it easier to do the exchange (and then maybe have it also pull up the USD, CAD exchange rate numbers from somewhere else).
