1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / PIVX desktop windows wallet 3.4.0 hacked on: November 19, 2019, 12:08:05 PM
Hi everybody
I would like to share had happened to me while experimenting with PIVX staking, and perhaps hear your opinion.

About over a week ago, i downloaded the PIVX windows wallet version 3.4.0, on a freshly formatted windows VPS in order to try to do some staking.
After syncing completed, i transferred a small amount of 20 PIV to the wallet, and started experimenting with staking. It took me a few days of trials, until finally the small arrow went green, meaning staking was "true". I decided to transfer the bulk of my PIV's to the wallet.
I pressed "receive" on my wallet, and an address appeared on the receive "form". I sent 5000 PIV to that address (see bellow):

DEE3aEoFdgtyBk8cs88UjDxbeauXhxtoh6

Surprisingly no funds reached my wallet. the 5000 PIV did reach the above address, but it is not an address under my control, so the funds are gone.
After the initial 5000 PIV lost transfer, I did make a few small transfer to the newly generated wallet addresses, and they all came successfully. It seems that only the first address that appeared on the "receive" form of the wallet, was compromised.

I wonder what you experts think about that case. Is it something that can be done remotely on a computer, or it is something that only someone on the staff of the server farm, had to be involved in (i was working with interserver.net VPS for many years, mainly running crypto related bots, and they might have been aware of my activity)
Thank you and looking forward for some input

I used the site for a while with no problems. I felt secure since I was using Google Authenticator.

One day I decided to withdraw my coins. I copied and pasted my wallet address on their withdraw form, and started the withdrawal. The bitcoins were sent to a different address than the one I have pasted. I am sure that someone from their employees did it, unless the whole thing is a scam.

Do not use this platform. If u have to use it, always use Google Authenticator. And of course, when you withdraw your coins, make sure they are sent to correct address.

Well, that's one way to look at it.
But for me, bitfinex is just a broker - like any other broker. He is responsible to take all possible measures to protect the customer's funds (and that goes way beyond emailing a warning to the customer).
I do not know a lot about the technology of bitcoin and what  makes it move around- but i am sure bitcoin has experts on that. I also know that bitcoins can be traced, by people that know what they are doing. My question is - since they had a month to work on it - could't and should't they have traced the hacked addressees?  Stopped whoever was doing that - and put some kind of blockage on those addresses to make the funds return? Even if it is a complicated procedure, as long as they are solvent and operating, it is their duty to do that. And suppose it is a very costly procedure, and they prefer not to go in to that kind of expenditure, then they should take the cheaper way around it, and reimburse the probably very few customer who happened to make the mistake of sending their funds to this bottomless hacked addresses.
Fox pup - I thank you for your answer - and I see and and respect your opinion. But looking at your background, I think you are not a fox pup in the bitcoin community - but an old fox. You probably know everything about the subject and i am sure you will never make a stupid mistake like us novices did.  From your point of view, somebody that does something that negligent, should pay for his mistake and for his ignorance.  But I still think that the protection of customer funds is also the brokers duty, and if he allows intruders to get to customer funds, obviously because of his own shortcomings,  he should do everything to stop it from happening again, and fails, then he should pay the price.
So I would be happy to hear some more opinions on that

Hi to all
I would like to describe what happened to us, and hear your opinions about it.
About a month ago, Bitfinex announced they were hacked, and advised all traders to use new addresses for depositing bitcoins. We did comply and started using new addresses. The problem is - we are a corporate account, and more than one person is trading on the same account.
A few days ago, one of our traders deposited 15btc, to the old bitfinex address (note - this hapened a month after the "hacking" occurred}. The bitcoins were not credited to our account, and bitfinex rely to our enquiri was:

Quote
"As you can see in the announcement here: https://www.bitfinex.com/pages/announcements/?id=35 that you read when logging in on Jun, 17 2015 07:56:48 UTC (and that have been sent by email on May 22), you should no longer use the old deposit addresses, as they have been compromised.

We have unfortunately not been able to recover your BTC and therefore can not credit them in your account."

They did not bother to answer to my follow up email again

My  questions are those:
1. Should they not be responsible for funds sent to their own address supplied to us by them?
2. Once they knew about the hacking, could or should they have taken steps to block or prevent this kind of thing from happening?
3. How can i even be sure they have not got the 15 BT, and just kept them?
4. can this considered a criminal act? (I do think it is criminal).
5. Can I do something to force their hand?

Looking forward to your answers and advise

@arie - your story really worries me.  Have you looked for any supervisory body for that exchange / or the bank?

@HitBTC   - u should tell us what's going on or you make things worse...

Serious banking problems?  Security breach? Coins stolen? Just poor Managment?    So let's just hope this is no MtGox 2.0!

If something is not working in this world, than usually banks are involved.   So I think that their banks is screwing things up and HitBTC can't do anything about it.   BTC withdrawals & Trading is still working like a charm...

I really hope these problems will go away  as hitBTC used to be the best exchange in Europe.

@HitBTC  please pm me or write when your banking problems are resolved.  I will only deposit again if deposits are credited within 1 banking day.

EDIT: Euros arrived at hitBTC today!

Something seems to be moving. Hope will be ok. Ill update the link anyway it goes.

Hi

I have a serious issue with HIT BTC - in fact so serious that I am beginning to wonder about how reliable HitBTC is.
I have initiated 2 usd transfers on the 24th of september (40000usd and 50000usd). That was  around 5 days b4 you had your upgrade problem. Since money has not arrived, i emailed your support department. The answers I got were ranging from from ridiculous to plain lies. For example:
"It takes our bank a while to check large outgoing transfers" (that was 9 days after my outgoing transfers have cleared my hitBtc account so i classify it as a lie). Another example "our financing department has contacted the bank, but it takes up to 5 days for the bank to reply" (classification - lie).
So can you explain what is going on? What kind of support team you have and what kind of financing department you have. How long does it take for your supoport team to walk to the office next door and blast the finance department people to solve the issue? And how long does it take your finance department people to pick up the phone and blast the bank people to find the funds? Or perhaps it is a more serious matter? One that i dont even dare think about!! Please let me know and all the good people on this forum, how is hitbtc, the most advanced cryptocurrency exchange, going to handle this matter?

Thank you

No news. I did not hear from hitbtc customer service yestarday and today, and my 90k withdrawal is still missing

Just for clarification - the transfers I am talkin about are "outgoing" transfers (withdrawals) from my two HitBtc accounts to my bank
