This is a message I sent Joe the other day, involving a radical idea that may or may not be feesible. As Joe has a lot on his plate I've decided to let the community munch it over a bit before he gets to reading it Wink


What follows is an unpolished, unfinished idea, and as you might have noticed, I am incapable of short versions, so take your time when reading it to fully grasp my meaning Wink

I was up last night as I had a bit too much coffee and was thinking on how to eliminate the big miners without hurting the rest of the network. The answer - you can't, at least not the way cryptomining is designed now. Even if you limit the POW to let's say 160KH/s, there is nothing stopping me from splitting 700KH/s onto six or seven accounts and seven threads, still increasing the overall hashrate of the network and bringing down the reward, gaining more profit than the average CPU miner. So I came up with a safety switch.

Each CPU has info on it (at least most every recent one) including brand, model, and unique serial number accessible via C++ code. This can be used to limit a person's mining ventures, but only (and this is the biggest downside I can think of) if the code for the miner remains closed-source. This of course clashes with most of the mining logic to evenly distribute money, so that also needs to be redefined a bit for the concept to work.

Imagine the following scenario:

The block chain is mostly left intact, meaning that hashes are calculated, and blocks are closed and people get MAGI. But instead of the person closing the block getting all of the reward, the WHOLE network works as a pool. A user has a minimum hashrate of 1 KH/s to remain viable for currency gain. A user has a maximum hashrate of 30KH/s that he can dedicate to mining in the network pool, thus increasing the network's overall gain. Once a block is closed, the reward is split EVENLY among all participants trying to close that block, regardless of their contributed hashrate. This basically ensures that every participating miner, regardless of their CPU capabilities, is capable of mining the same sum over the course of a day - distributing the cryptocurrency evenly. To prevent a user from mining with several accounts as he can now, the CPU unique number is included in the hashchain, ensuring that one CPU is mining at the same gain as every other, or in other words, one CPU cannot run two threads for two users at the same time. If it reaches more than 30KH in a second (per CPU, not user), the rest of the attempts to close the block are denied for that CPU for the remainder of the timeframe (they are invalid, even if block closure is achieved by the >30000th attempt). This is why the source should probably remain closed, otherwise, a workaround sending fake CPU IDs can be constructed.

For those that want to get ahead (in other words, want to throw their oversized hashrate at the system) there is a separate hashchain, very much similar to the current one - the rewards get smaller as more and more hashes are sent, BUT, you have a bigger statistical chance of receiving the reward of a closed block in proportion to your additional hashrate compared to the total competing hashrate of this second chain. So the rewards are still split, and closing a block is still not a guarantee of profit - you only get a bigger chance if you mine with more powerfull gear (but the rewards are, like now, proportional to the overall network hashrate, and will thus not overpower a regular miner by much).

Together, the two hashchains should distribute the currency evenly among users, with the small folk getting an even share, and the big guys duking it out for spare change (with each block chain leveling block reward separately).

Of course, I may have overlooked some important detail, but I wanted to share my thoughts with you and the rest of the comminuty Smiley

Something is definitely wrong there, you should be getting 50+ KH/sec. Try my GUI https://github.com/JasonXtreme/MagiGUI and run the Wolf V2 i7 miner, should up your hashrate. The guys doing 5000+ KH/s are either GPU mining or have clusters of PCs doing the work (IT admins have the power, I guess). I wish those would stick to bitcoin or sth Tongue

I forgot to say in my post that my pc is running windows, this link is for Linux, right? But I've checked the folders in your link and I think it's the same miner I'm using. The one I have here says "wolf-m7m-cpuminer-V2-x64-0204". I've also tried switching between all minerd.exe versions in the pack, with no improvements in hashrate.

My processor is an i7-4500U, I thought it would be much faster than that :/

Anyways, since I work full time on my pc, I'll let it mining even if I can't improve the hashrate, because I've been reading this thread for a long time and I really liked this coin  Wink

No no, the link is for Windows (both 32 and 64 bit versions of the various miners are included, courtesy of Spexx and Wolf) Smiley It's interesting, I myself am running a i7-3610QM @ 2.3GHz, which is of course in my laptop, and I get about 65-85 KH/s, depending on the room temperature Cheesy With the Wolf i7 miner (the basic version). Perhaps the 4500U is a downsized version? Can't say I'd know Wink

Hello! I'm kinda new to mining and wanted to try mining XMG. But there's something I don't understand. Isn't it only for CPU mining? There is this guy in a pool who's getting 5,314 KH/s. Is it possible to get this hashrate with CPU mining only?

Also, I'm getting around 17~21 KH/s, which seems pretty low for my i7 processor. Am I missing something? It says I'll have only 0.180 coins per day  Embarrassed

Thanks for that feedback. I had similar problems with my ISP blocking stuff using DNS. Our wonderful Government has something to do with it. Sometimes you might have to resort to using a proxy or VPN to get where you want to go. It is only a minor irritation when you know how to get around Wink


I had somewhat a problem with connecting to Suprnova (the pool and the website) around the time you were talking about it, but it magically want away at the end of the day Smiley Might have been a fluke?

Windows 64 bit miner

I have updated this with a newer, smaller, slightly faster minerd.exe and it performs better with multiple threads too.

It is around 1.5 percent faster than the previous offering.

I have tried to build something for AVX and AVX2 instruction set support but I get a slightly slower minerd.exe when I do that. It is really quite odd!

This latest miner code responds to compiler flags in a completely different way to the earlier code. I do not know if this would work for Linux but I get faster code using -Os than with -Ofast.

EDIT: And yet I get 56.5Khash/s using only 5 of my 8 threads...  Undecided This should mean I could get about 80 running full speed, no?

Well then... my Windows laptop used to dish out about 25Khash/s, and I had some virtual pcs on free trials, coming together at about 75-80Khash/s according to the suprnova pool. With the recent development and optimizations by spexx and Wolf0, the total adds up to...

Yup, 220 is not an error, It's been stable like that ever since I upgraded.

I'd say the boys should post some XMG addresses. Even if the speed boost does effect the network negatively a bit, these guys are working hard and this stuff isn't easy. I know I'll donate, even if it isn't a fortune Cheesy
On a separate note, Joe also deserves some kind of reward, working on pretty much everything else XMG related Wink

Had the same problem (actually still do). If the connection protocol is stratum+tcp, everything works fine, but if the host protocol is http or an IP, I get the same error.

Not sure if anyone needs this, but with the win64 m7m CPU miner v2, my i7-5930K (OC'd to 4.3GHz) runs at 48 khash/s using the 64 bit Spexx version, and at 51 khash/s using the 64 bit Marcus version.
temperatures stay at around 55C with watercooling.

On a point of order here, the latest 64 bit version of my miner for AVX2 processors runs just a little faster than the Marcus (Haswell) version. I suspect you may be using my generic version of the miner for non-AVX processors. Make sure that you have the latest versions and are using the right one for your processor. The complete collection of my miners is available here:-

This is a self-extracting zip file that will unzip to C:\XMGminer by default. The miners are unzipped to their own sub-folders 32bit, generic, avx and avx2.




Well, the AVX version runs about the same (or rather, exactly the same) as the marcus version on my I7-3610QM Smiley

Scratch that, it picked up. It's not much (24Khash to 25.5 Khash) but it's definitely improvement Cheesy

Indeed I am. Basically, this was a clone and make, just to see if it would run. I'm compiling everything on the PS3 as I don't have another linux environment atm. The CELL SDK requires fedora/red hat linux. I come from a .net background, so this is all pretty new to me Smiley I'd like to compile for the SPU, but I can't seem to find a SPU compiler nowadays...

The problem with that is that running on the PPE doesn't mean it'll run on the SPEs.

It looks like there was a BTC miner developed for the PS3/SPEs called "Cellminer".  That might prove to be a nice starting point.

I've been trying to compile the Cellminer for a while now, but can't find the spu-gcc package anywhere for the life of me. The same basic problem as with the noncepool miner. Also, Cellminer is written in ruby. I despise ruby Tongue Guess I'll keep fiddling until Joe finds some time. NewtonsMthd, you're welcome to ssh onto the PS3 if you'd like to try anything, just PM me.

P.S. In case anyone would like a tutorial on installing linux on an updated (and jailbroken) PS3 (I have yet to find a complete one, meaning it was pure luck that got me through), PM me and I'll write one up.

Found pre-build GMP that works with the PPC, compiled the noncepool version of the magi miner (https://github.com/noncepool/m7magi-cpuminer-v2). Compiled successfully, but it, as expected, goes haywire. Here's a bit of what happens:

That's right, that is one second's output. Plus, reporting to the stratum failed for some reason. Joelao95 who is helping me is super busy with MagiPay as he told me, so anybody else, any ideas how to fix this? No need for a quick fix, just where to start looking. Let's get the PS3 rolling Cheesy
