Are you running the latest client?   I had run into some issues when I was running an older version.    I'm not an expert in the platform, but that helped me.  Hope it helps you.

Well, as they say, Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

- No one is trying to convince anyone to move to Detroit.
- No one is trying to change your opinion if you feel Detroit, or the people of Detroit deserve to die because the free market determined it.   Just don't donate or help if you don't want to.
   (For that matter we would not have National Parks, or clean air if the free market were left unfettered. See the tragedy of the commons).
- No one is stealing any money from your online wallet.
- I would also doubt that the folks who are giving advice on how to start a business or charity have actually done it.  There is no one prescriptive way to start a movement. As a successful serial entrepreneur I can assure you that in some cases it is still OK to brainstorm on the back of a napkin.
-There is more to this plan than has been presented on the one page site. 

Now, having said all that, upon trying to get past the low signal to noise ratio of the reaction to this project so far and pick up something useful, I  accept the aversion to an anonymous charitable project asking for donations.  Even if I was initially annoyed.  Though there may be a bit of irony seeing as the bitcoin community revolves around anonymity from its founder to its transactions but either way I understand it now. I would add that if there is interest from a charitable organization, or a dedicated individual we would be happy to work with you and discuss the plan.   However, at this point I personally prefer to be like Batman instead of revealing my Bruce Wayne identity. 

Please feel free to comment, but please just refrain from donating or getting involved instead of going back and forth with antagonistic posts on grammar or spewing other irrelevant points.  If you have other valid constructive criticism, fine but I'm guessing it's probably time to move away from this thread altogether.

I am glad this is generating discussion so far.  I am just getting back to reading these now so let me do my best to reply to the points raised in the posts above.

• Nobody is going to get rich off of this (maybe that's why it won't work).
• It is not a ponzi scheme.
• Nobody is pre-mining anything, but we are asking for donations and volunteers to put to use.
• The money will help beautify the houses of Detroit and create jobs.   If this benefits the politicians, then it is an unfortunate side-effect.
• Ultimately this will benefit everyone more than it will punish those who you may feel are responsible.

The bitcoin community is apparently very skeptical, and with good reason given the thefts and scams that exist.  But just because your ex cheated on you doesn't mean every future lover will.  We are small and grass roots and easy to pick on right now.

While I am a believer and supporter of bitcoin, I can see why someone would want to start a new currency altogether.  Aurora Coin, scam or not, will raise much more money than this ever will for the people of Iceland.

Now as for the one-page, godaddy site: Anonymous registering aside for a minute,  who cares?   I explained I am just getting started.  Why spend money on an elaborate website solution when a quick and dirty solution to get the message out will do.   It will iteratively evolve if there is interest,  if not we will let it die.   Scammers are much more polished than that and usually catch more flies.  We are grass-roots and small.

Now for the anonymous registration:  Some of us are involved in multiple projects.  I am the former executive director of a non-profit organization and board member of another. I have been on the board of Detroit organizations to promote Detroit.   Before I unzip my fly and as Jay Mohr says, "Put My Name on it" I'd like to see it gain traction and see if there is a "there there."   Bitcoin projects tend to raise questions these days as you can already see.

Still hoping for the few folks who want to make a difference and who leap before they look to gain some traction.  These things build on themselves. Maybe they all went to Aurora Coin?

Well the skepticism is healthy, even if a bit cynical, but I do like your idea of putting specific items to BTC bids, so in the meantime we are soliciting volunteers who can identify houses, or projects such as those described above, that would be good candidates.

I am hoping this gains a bit of traction quickly so we can put together some pictures and progress reports of the first houses we rehab or get started on.   Then keep a running log on the site to compare to the blockchain so people can see where their money went and how it made a difference.

Right now this is just a small seedling of an idea from some people with good intentions.

I am not proposing anything.  I am just asking if this could be accomplished with BTC which I have seen to be a liquid, existing crypto currency.  

However,  if it were a collection in BTC for the people of Iceland, the amount per citizen would be:  the total donated, divided by the # of people.

I personally think this is a laudable goal.   I would also personally donate BTC to this cause but have some questions about developing a new currency for this cause or each cause like this.  People will ultimately have to assign a value to currency in the marketplace.

If they currently have laws on bitcoin,  is it likely that they would impose laws on Aurora coin? 

Or is there some fundamental difference that I am missing?

Additionally they would have more services,  tools and liquidity available to them with bitcoin.   

If they have a population of 300k,   Aurora coin might face liquidity issues.

Bitcoin is proven, and works.   

Couldn't the team accomplish the same goal by taking up a collection, and doing a bitcoin "drop"?

The trust issue would still be at least the same, but they would be on a proven platform.  Or they could use an escrow service (although I understand they prefer not to)

Thoughts?

Because when something is 99.94% complete it shouldn't take another 1/2 hour from that point.   It's a useless stat to most people, but bitcoin is not ready for  most people yet...   

When I open the client and have 115 blocks remaining to catch up, The client tells me that I am 99.94% complete.  This implies that the next block should make me 100% complete.

Although what it is telling me is accurate for the entire block chain, this information is about as useful as Microsofts estimated time remaining bar telling me there are 20 seconds remaining for over 2 minutes.

Really  this number should be telling me how much time it will take to complete the remaining blocks   so if I open the client with 115 blocks to get complete, it should estimate that I am 1/115 complete or less than 1% to give me an estimate how much time it will take to catch up.

Could be worse is not what I want to hear.   If its not easy to get money in/out, then the run up in price lately is artificially inflated and bound to fall.... hard

It looks like Mt. Gox is responding, but if they learn anything look at all the frustration by customers here trying to get their money.

According to Mt. Gox's website :

Withdrawals typically take 2-5 full business days to reach your bank, provided that you have included all required information such as your full name and address as it appears on your bank statement.

So, I requested a withdrawal on July 17th.    After not hearing anything for a week, despite paying an outrageous $25 dollar wire transfer fee, I submitted a ticket.
To submit the ticket, I have to logon with my account,  and create an another "Support ID".
After creating this account which is linked with my ID and email, I submitted a ticket.

I got a reply that stated

Thank you for contacting us. Before we may action your request we require the following information:

Mt.Gox account number (E.g. MTG#####X):
First/Last Name:
Bank/Institution Name:
Amount/Currency:
Transaction ID:
Date/Time the transfer was made:


So I supplied all that information even though both accounts should be linked and they could look it up.

Finally I submitted the ticket only to be told:

Usually it will take 12 business days for the International wire transfer withdrawal to be processed.

At the very least, it's not consistent.    However, its very frustrating and all you users out there trying to get money from Mt. Gox should be warned that it is not a smooth process.

ok, never mind previous post. I think I found the answer (didnt show up in search) but I see that it doesnt matter if you stop and start it.

Theoretically,  does it matter if I start and stop vanitygen when trying to find a regular expression vanity match?

Am I better to "pause" it after it's been running for a few days (which I really can't do)

The reason I ask is because I need to reboot but I've been trying to find a match for a couple of days and if I start and stop, do I basically have to start brute force at the beginning, or is it like mining where stopping and starting theoretically doesnt matter.
