1  Economy / Services / Re: [Closed Contest] Design a Bitcoin-based Bank Note (BitAurum Bit Note) on: March 17, 2013, 02:43:44 AM
I have to say, that there is some truly amazing work being done here, and whilst I preferred Acorn's design, the final one is also excellent....I was thinking I could enter this, but I'm clearly late to the game..

Out of interest, Acorn (And BitcoinLady)...what plugin/app were you using to do your Guilloches?  I know it can be done straight in Illustrator, but I'd love to know how you did it...I have a client looking for something similar...

Point to note; I'm a graphics artist, not a developer myself. I won't be wading into the code etc. too much as i'm simply not qualified; my aims are to show the ease of use & ease of adoption, to show the coin isn't some daft internet thing but is a valid, live, viable currency, and to show it is secure, since the main concerns of the devs, the venture-capital types, and the managers & startup types at the event aren't "is the API easy to integrate" - I will of course mention how easy it is etc. and show some stuff on the API usage, but really, their focus will be on:
a) is there any point (is it viable)?
b) is it hard/expensive to get running with it? (I guess this would be where I cover API usage, but it's more than that - I'll want tot show it's easy and costs nothing to start accepting BTC), and
c) is there a market/real-world use, or is this just somewhere to store "real money" and lose some on commissions/transfer-fees etc. - this is where the physical coins come in; they're not daft or silly.
In fact, I see physical coinage as vital to getting wider adoption of the coin.  Not only does it allow for non-networked transfers, it also gives the coin some solidity.  A lot of people don't like trusting in computers/pure maths (Obviously not the people I'm speaking to, but their end-customers possibly), and like to feel something in their hands.  This is why coinage is still in circulation.  People don't trust banks etc. or credit cards (and rightly so).  A lot of those people would be more likely to adopt BTC if you can show it's "real", so the physical coins ARE important in mass-adoption.

Of course, the other part of that is education, showing that bitcoin isn't like the other electronic currency out there (ie credit-cards etc.) since there's no Bank, no credit-card company to arbitrarily cancel your money or apply fees etc.
My talk isn't aimed at THOSE people - it's aimed at people who want to sell apps and market products and services to the general public, a lot of whom WILL be those people... so I'm trying to sell the coin not only to the people at the meet, but also to show how they can sell it in turn to the public.
7  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Donations requested for Bitcoin Community Talk on: November 01, 2012, 06:32:23 PM
Fair criticisms, all.
I was planning on talking about API access, and ease-of-use for mobile devs etc.  I just thought it would help to show that the coin does NOT have to be solely digital; that it can have a physical manifestation that holds value in itself since it has the magic number on it Smiley
I mentioned the idea to the organiser and he thought it would be a great way of showing the duality of the physical/virtual divide; ie. here's physical bitcoin, but really it's the number that's important, but that doesn't mean you can't trade the coins as well.  As long as they still have the hologram on them, then they're also valid bitcoin...

And yes, I know the casascius coins weren't originally intended for trading, but you CAN use them to trade; offline trades in places that don't/can't have network access, or can't wait for confirms.  The only downside they have is once they're "spent", they're hard to recharge (I think the makes offer new stickers but of course they're not as trustworthy as original)...I guess we need a "smart" card that can be exchanged or used to exchange coin that costs very little but can store the numbers inside it...
I saw a demo of that sometime ago on the forums...maybe in a year or two it will be ready...
8  Bitcoin / Project Development / Donations requested for Bitcoin Community Talk on: November 01, 2012, 07:02:39 AM
Hi all;
I wouldn't normally go asking for donations in such a brazen way, but it's not for me, it is for the 'coin!
I'm due to give a talk later this month on Bitcoin to a large and influential tech-group; it's basically a social group that holds monthly talks on various subjects.  You can read more about the group here.  I'm doing a talk outlining bitcoin and why it should be used; a lot of the people at the group are developers of apps, some database types, I met a VC guy looking to invest last time, and companies hiring devs etc. so I figure if I can do a good talk it will be a good opportunity to get BTC into the dev community; if they adopt it for their products etc we could see some real-world growth here.  Or not.  But worth a shot I thought...

What I'm asking for donations is so that I can purchase a couple of the Casascius physical coins to distribute around the group, then "open" one, and show it being traded, as a practical demonstration.  Obviously this means that once you add in shipping to Scotland, the slight commission above the face-value etc. about half of the outlay evaporates.
I know most people won't be willing to donate to something, especially not at this time of the year, we're all counting the pennies (hence why I'm asking!) but I'm not looking for much.  Only need one or two coins, so at most we're talking 2 or 3 BTC.
I'm even happy if someone donates a physical coin that if they'd like they could participate in the talk by being the recipient of the trade back once the coin is "opened" (I'm even thinking this could be done live over skype etc., donator willing, to add to the drama of the talk!  Better hope the block is confirmed quickly!); this way, sure, you'd still have donated a bit since shipping, commission etc. will take a toll, but you'll at least get the face value of the coin back.

If anyone's willing to donate, the address is 1L1NAzofDHjJsjC4ZPbgUoneb3zkRqYfVJ.

If you're willing to donate enough to get a coin, and want involved in the talk, please drop me a pm before donating etc. as this will obviously require some coordination to get you in the talk, and also so I can send you the BTC from the opened coin...

Thanks

10  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Help build a better Bitcoin logo! on: August 05, 2012, 06:39:59 PM
I'd have to agree...the current logo is ok...a little cute and unserious looking, but friendly and unthreatening. I'd like to see something better. I'll throw in BTC10 for a set of vector format public domain logos. I'd like to see a three colors (or less) version, a full color version, one that looks good in grayscale and in binary black and white. That set should all be "the same logo," so to speak (clearly each will be slightly different to accommodate the constraints). We need at least two logo sets with different aspect ratios: a square logo and a rectangular logo...not the same as each other, although one might contain the other.
Thank you so much for your pledge!

I'll make sure to forward your specifications to the designer.

Cheers,
-Jon

To clarify -- the two aspect ratios stuff above...I think we need a square-ish graphic logo and a rectangular graphic logo + slogan/text. Many web/mobile uses need square shapes (favicons/app icons) while website front pages often have a rectangular logo/slogan combo in the upper right corner.

At any rate, I'm more generous than picky, so good luck!  I hope we see something great; we've already seen some great starts. I appreciate your foresight on this issue...Bitcoin needs to look as cool as it is, or people won't spend the time to learn how cool it is.

I disagree on the square/rectangular idea.
A good logo should be able to be presented IN a square etc.  But look at the Apple logo - it is neither square nor rectangular, closer to a circle, but can be presented in any way you choose.  A circular logo, based on the coin is fine for usage anywhere, as long as it is well designed.  As for use in icons etc. a logo is NOT an icon.  An application icon (my speciality, actually), can include a logo, but would be more specific to the app itself, rather than the brand it uses
For instance, say someone writes a wallet-app for iOS.  Square (ok, rounded square) icon required, but it wouldn't just be the logo, be it coin, square or otherwise in the square. It would probably be a wallet, with a bitcoin poking out etc, using the space well to emphasise not only that the app is bitcoin related but also that it is a wallet...

Obviously I like my design or else I wouldn't have done it, but regardless of which logo you use, it has to A) sum up bitcoin well, and B) be usable in all colours/mediums (which is why I kept my version very simple; small size won't kill it, nor will low-gamut or even single-gamut printing etc.).  If those two factors are not the overriding objectives here, then you don't need and shouldn't use a new logo, since the old one has very good brand recognition (hence why I tried to stay as close as possible to it)
11  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redesigned Bitcoin Logo on: August 05, 2012, 06:30:51 PM
Thanks, always appreciated.  Sorry for the delay in getting them uploaded, but here are the two circle-versions (no-one seems to like the version with dots, myself included, but if you do, lemme know and I'll upload it as well) in SVG format.

I've also included in the SVG file, hidden at present, two versions of the Ƀ symbol, so these two files should do everything.
Bitcoin Orange
Bitcoin White

They look rather nice in yellow as well..

And since it's an SVG, if you really want, you can add gradients and shadows etc. to look like the Bitcoin of old...

Thanks and I hope these are of some use to you...
12  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redesigned Bitcoin Logo on: August 04, 2012, 03:44:08 AM
Yes...I included the doted design out of a sense of completion, but in truth I have to say I think the ringed version and the white-reverse version are my preferred versions now. The dots are lost on a small size in any case.  I think it also works better in other colours as well (which is sort of the point of this redesign - a logo that can work in any colour, much like the Apple logo)
13  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Now Funded] Help build a better Bitcoin logo! on: August 03, 2012, 02:52:32 AM
Added some new logo designs to this thread here
14  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redesigned Bitcoin Logo on: August 03, 2012, 02:47:09 AM
Absolutely, that's the point of it.  Use it for whatever your hearts desires, even if that's ripping the files apart and re-creating it.  All I ask is if you're feeling generous, bounce me some coin.  Even that's voluntary.
Use it freely, source-files are a coming.
15  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Redesigned Bitcoin Logo on: August 03, 2012, 02:25:56 AM
I have added another "accepted" button without the drop-shadow -

Also: Bonus Nerdy Fact - the coins with the dots on them have 58 dots (credits go to Smoovius in the IRC #bitcoin channel)
16  Bitcoin / Project Development / Redesigned Bitcoin Logo on: August 03, 2012, 02:14:05 AM
Hi everyone. As noted in this thread here I have created a redesign of the bitcoin "coin" (also known as the pancake) logo, so that it is suitable for small sizes, and universal printing etc.

Whist the ever-popular golden coin logo is great, it's hard to see at small sizes.  This redesign should allow the coin to stay visible right down to favicon sizes.  In addition, printing on t-shirts and other merchandise with the old logo is hard as it's a lot of gradients etc.  This logo is design using solid-block colours; this also means if you like, you can change the colour to your liking.  Not everyone likes orange, if you prefer a yellower looking logo, easily done, no gradients etc.
The logo will "work" in any colour, including monochrome/black on white, so it's also easier to print for black and white documents etc.

I know it looks quite simple, but this is by design (if you'll pardon the pun) - many variations were gone through and tested before I settled on these few designs here; simple is sometimes best.
Lastly, I'm presenting three different designs here, but due to the ongoing argument that is raging about Ƀ versus BTC as the proper bitcoin symbol, I'm supplying both.  I release these artworks into the public-domain under the Creative Commons licence.  I'll happily provide the vector originals in both Adobe Illustrator CS6 format as well as SVG as I can get them uploaded etc.  For now though, here are some PNG's/JPEG's to look at:

First off, the new Ƀ designs:

With dots :

Without dots:

And lastly a reverse orange-on-white, handy for really small usage, such as favicons or menu links:

Now a version of each of the above but with the older BTC:

And lastly a couple of "in-use" menu buttons etc to show the associated typeface design:

If anyone has any comments/suggestions, wants changes, or other things done etc. please lemme know, and if you found this useful, please feel free to throw me some coin - 1EUGrS4nRKpTtMrfbwwq4EziYpVCF8vym6  Thanks
17  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [Now Funded] Help build a better Bitcoin logo! on: August 01, 2012, 01:34:53 AM
It seems a little cartoon-y to me still...

That's a fair criticism; probably due to the colours, and the font I chose.  I will keep the same colours (allbeit I can modify their usage etc.) but try out some different fonts.  Key here was to create a logo that's professional looking and can be used for anything.  The coin-icon is nice but as you've said, you can't print it well, it won't monochrome great, it's hard to see at low-size etc.

I'll work at it some more..people have said they like option-4 with the dots...I might develop that further.  Someone wanted me to put the "veritas in numeris" on it as well, I think it would clutter, what do you all think?

I should add, I of course hereby release all these artworks freely to the world, under the MIT licence.  Forgot to say that before...

Ahh, you meant the old BTC and a lighter shadow...mea culpa...
