I fully support what you are doing. Thank you.

You bet. I'm not sure how much we can do when it comes to slaying the copyright dragon, but didn't Fredrik of TPB ask for competition?

Also, VICE was kind enough to run this doc on DD today:

I trust a moderator will move this thread if it belongs in another subtopic.

I wanted to thank the bitcoin community for supporting DEFCAD and Defense Distributed. The Wiki Weapon thread here from August of 2012 is what helped put the project on track, I know it.

I was hoping I could talk about the vision for DEFCAD and how we think bitcoin will be an integral part of its developmental side. We see not just a database for uploading/downloading, but also a project and portfolio component where physible developers could find an audience and receive support for their efforts.

Let's talk?

So we became a minor success today.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2012/08/23/wiki-weapon-project-aims-to-create-a-gun-anyone-can-3d-print-at-home/

With the Forbes pickup we got recycled across the internet and the BTC has been coming in. Some serious private funding offers as well.

I want to thank you all for being one of the first communities to discuss and support our project.

Of course it's not odd to me because I have a modicum of understanding of how the world actually works.

That is mere apologism- and do you see how thoroughly conservative?

Look how you've pivoted from targeting his diagnosis of socialism to targeting his prescriptions.
6  Other / Politics & Society / Re: My Thoughts on Fredric Bastiat & "The Law" on: August 16, 2012, 01:42:34 AM
Bastiat's central thesis is indelible probably because it is so easy to grasp. Governments and states create parallel, schizophrenic bodies of law: Public Law and Private Law.

Actors who could never get away with theft as private individuals are able to elevate themselves through entry into government and take by the auspices of their "office." Government allows for the exercise of all kinds of anti-social schemes and insanities that through any other method of organization would be rightly labelled criminal. Give a private offense the sanction of legislation, and it is somehow acceptable. This clearly violated Enlightenment conceptions of "universal law," and the long common law traditions (for one) that are its fundaments, and so Bastiat was able to call the law "perverted."

Grounding his observations and rhetorical strategies in their immediate material and historical contexts does not rob his thesis of its impact and clarity. You've confused yourself with your blog post. You aren't thinking clearly. But the attempt is worthy, and you shouldn't stop writing.

What does a government do that a company can also not do, theoretically? I think that government is an arbitrary label.

"Legitimately" use aggressive force.
Bravo for brevity.
8  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What is the differenc between AnCap and everything else? on: August 13, 2012, 04:47:54 AM
I think the world is in a state of AnCap. I see the government as one big company that "extorts" people for money and prints its own money too. They take polls of the population and try to (or at least appear to) act in the best interest of the public. The list goes on.

Could it be that AnCappers are just angry at how powerful and irrational and immoral this company is and seek an alternative? Do they want to just hit the reset button on society so that their version of power distribution gets a fair chance?

What does a government do that a company can also not do, theoretically? I think that government is an arbitrary label.
The world is increasingly neither anarchic nor capitalistic, which is the difference. Seeing the government as one big company at the commanding heights of the economy is of course what you are meant to see, since this is the conceit that holds sway in this era. But this phenom (governments centrally planning and directing substantial portions of economic "investments"- my how the leftists have poisoned the well with that word) is known more customarily as state capitalism, corporatism, and fascism.

To question AnCap motivations is an inquiry I can't attempt at the moment. But I think your assumption, that AnCap power distributions and BigGov power distributions are theoretical and practical analogues, is the main flaw in your thinking.

A good starting point would be important libertarian media. I suggest you try talking with the people behind Reason TV, for example. I believe they'd like to make an interview with you about your project.

Congratulations, and good luck!

Russia Today would probably love the story, too.
Lol believe me we're spamming them hard.

I've found this to be remarkable for traffic generation. I think I copied it from this thread, actually. So thanks again, guys.

Zinoviev,

First let me say I appreciate your efforts, as well as your courage. I don't think I'd have the guts to make such a thing putting my real face in videos like that... but well, maybe it's because I live in a place where guns are almost totally banned to civilians.

I'm posting here just to say that with such project, you shouldn't have much trouble to make a buzz. Once you reach a middle size media, the story will be copied over and over, and you shouldn't have much difficulties in gathering the money you need from that point on.

EhVedado!

Hail brother. You know, the number one email I'm getting takes a "thank you for doing this" kind of track. It's not a problem at all, and your thinking is ours as well. No one cares when you're not already reported by someone else, so we've been catching breaks here and there in little liberty circles and through word of mouth from libertarian organizations. Day 1 I mail merged every ostensible libertarian org and think tank. A very small number of people replied, but it landed us interviews and libertarian legal representation at a big organization.

From there we're doing everything to land radio and media spots. My epic international mail merge is ready as well. We'll become a story overseas and reverse engineer our way onto the screens and into the minds of Americans. Libertas.

Why not do both?
Compete first, then reach out. The Wiki is now up at DefDist haha.
12  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Wiki Weapon on: August 10, 2012, 06:54:02 PM
Thanks for the update Zinoviev. I think your challenging and visionary project will garner a lot of interest. And it is awesome that you accept bitcoin.
I appreciate that very much. We've got probably one of the most epic global mail merges in the works. If you could see it you might weep haha.

There are quite a lot of new sites like this popping up

http://3dgunprintingforum.com/
My instinct is to either reach out or compete!
13  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Wiki Weapon on: August 10, 2012, 06:09:10 PM
Well it took me some time to get whitelisted, but I wanted to thank the contributors that I know must have read and posted in this thread. I received a handful of transactions denominated in "1776." It was actually quite humbling.

I'd be happy to talk more about the project or its connection to bitcoin if anyone is interested. Our interviews are popping up online, and one can see a more extended philosophical exposition of our intentions at the Anarchy Gumbo podcast here: http://bit.ly/P34KQ5

Happy to take PM's and emails as well. Thanks again for your support. We're just shy of $1000 contributed from all sources.

C. Rutledge Wilson of Defense Distributed - http://PrintableGun.com

We're stepping out and publicly raising money to prove and spread a CAD/STL file for a completely 3D printable handgun. We're hastening a brave new world, and are happy to be at the nexus of First and Second Amendment and IP issues.

We've been getting a lot of support in Bitcoin, so I wanted to join the forum and learn more myself!

Zino here. I've been into bitcoin for a while, but I've just started my first project accepting bitcoin!
