Hello everyone, I started this topic because I feel something is going on at one of the larger Canadian crypto exchanges "Quadrigacx".
For a while now it has not been possible to deposit funds to "Quadrigacx" through conventional methods.. Yes if you go to their funding page you will see a variety of options (all except one with significant deposit fees) However if you attempt to use them you will get the following error message.
"(funding method) funding is currently unavailable. In the meantime, please consider Interac Online or USD Bank Wire funding."
Both methods are fairly difficult to use, (I myself attempted to get an interact online debit card from Scotiabank to no avail, (despite them saying they have the service on their website, even if I was to eventually gain access to this funding method the limit is a paltry 2000 per transfer up to 4000 per day.(and pay 1.5% for the service))
Sure I could fund with a USD bank wire (to a Canadian exchange?) and lose significantly on the illiquid USD/BTC rate offered but that's not really an option.
Basically, we have a situation where its exceedingly difficult to get fiat onto the exchange.
However, Quadrigacx has proved themselves more than competent at getting fiat withdrawn from the exchange during this time of deposit restrictions.
Earlier I deposited crypto, sold and withdrew via EFT, within a few days the money showed up in my bank account, despite some transfers being over 10,000$.
In Conclusion we have an exchange where it is EASY to sell crypto, withdraw funds from the exchange. But VERY DIFFICULT to deposit fiat to purchase crypto. What do you think is going to happen to the price when you allow anyone to sell crypto, but essentially restrict 95% of the potential investors from getting their fiat onto the exchange to make purchases.
I, therefore, think that whilst potentially unintentional Quadrigacx is forcing the price of crypto's on their platform down. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

If the addresses you found have no transaction history you are looking at the wrong wallet.dat file. If you have the original hard drive then there is a possibility you may be able to recover the previously erased wallet.dat file and extract the private keys from that. I know datarecovery.com in Toronto has repaired lost/corrupted wallet.dat files in the past, they charged one guy 800$ and recovered 30k$~ for him(this was a few years ago, source: ( https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/2n02lt/iama_data_recovery_engineer_i_get_files_from ) You may need to pay upfront if you can't prove or provide an old address with a proven balance. If you're certain there were Bitcoins on that laptop DO NOT throw it away or give up. |

This made me laugh because he actually has a point.. I've spoken to someone complaining about how the barrier to entry for Bitcoin was so high (they legitimately thought they had to buy "a Bitcoin" to invest). There have been a number of other conversations I've had with people wondering how people can keep buying Bitcoin when they cost so much to buy. They all look legitimately surprised when I tell them you can buy 1/1000th or even 1/1,000,000th of a bitcoin if you really wanted to.. it may take a while for people to learn but I'm sure eventually the public will catch on... maybe

Sounds like he might have gotten scammed, or fell victim to slow bank processing times over holidays and New year's. The address 1HHWh5HxmCR9441nK2Q3gtrpGJCCuoKkYm did successfully transfer and confirm the 490$ you speak of on the date specified. You need to contact "coinify"

Update: increasing bounty to 200$ minimum.. need to get the important info out of these wallet.dat files. Is there an easy way to see if they are encrypted? I believe both files are from late 2013

Another update; wallet.dat files may be corrupt. My Bitcoin-Qt is *FINALLY* up to date. I attempted to replace the wallet.dat file with my old ones. exact error returned is "wallet.dat corrupt, salvage failed". Same error with both older wallets I tried...
With regards to "salvage failed" error. I played around with the valid wallet.dat file and noticed the "salvage" doesn't really try very hard. the slightest amount of gibberish inserted into the file causes the error to appear.

Try searching for fd1701308201130201010420 in the wallet using a hex editor. (Or perhaps some smaller portion like 0201010420). The next 32 bytes after that string would be your private key, assuming super old, unencrypted wallets.
Edit: Oh. Also, show how you're searching for these strings in the hex editor. (With a screenshot, and not with your wallet.dat open just so nothing private is revealed.) Most allow for searching for text and hexadecimal. Maybe you're searching for hexadecimal as text or something.
0201010420 returns countless results .. fd1701308201130201010420 returns nothing. Using Hex Fiend, The wallet I was attempting to search is from late 2013. Searching in Hex, I also have the ability to search in text. I repeated search with valid up to date wallet.dat file and was unable to locate "fd1701308201130201010420" |

Bounty still up for grabs as I am unsure as to how I should use that tool, (also I don't have any cd's I can boot from, and I don't have any familiarity with Linux). If someone can walk me through using it on a mac or pc without a boot cd, Ill reward both the OP and you. If an alternate easier or faster method is available ill also reward that.

I should note that the information above is from trying to use a valid wallet generated by bitcoin core. (qt). Also, I dont think the wallets im trying to access are encrypted,. I tried using a hex editor finder thing and was unable to locate "keyA" 01 03 6B 65 79 41 04 in the autogenerated wallet or the old wallets.

Hey, I have some old wallet.dat files I'm trying to recover/access. In the process of downloading bitcoin core. I tried to replace the automatically generated wallet.dat file with my wallet.dat file(s) and it gives me a "corrupted unable to recover" message, both the wallets are very old, pre-forks.
I have since installed pywallet and its associated dependencies and get the following error when trying to dump the VALID autogenerated wallet.dat file from the bitcoin core with pywallet.
'ecdsa' package is not installed, pywallet won't be able to sign/verify messages

im fairly concerned as i recently made sizeable deposit , won some , then was going to withdraw but it seems to be down now =p. its happened before though so i'm sure it will be fine. Dont worry too much about primedice, im sure they make a sizeable income regardless if market share has dropped.
