1  Economy / Speculation / Re: Recovery?? on: April 12, 2013, 05:18:36 PM
I've bought my coins back... I couldn't help.

The price seems to have stabilised, and there's good support now behind it.

It's time to hold again.

There's so much attention on bitcoin. everyone holding their breath, or glued to the screen like me.

Now that Gox isn't dying, and people are less afraid of gox dying. I think this is the beginning of a steady recovery!

Nothing has changed from a few days ago!! The coin is even more cool cause everyone is watching to see what happens and hoping to pickup a bargain.

Even a DDOS isn't going to shake confidence anymore. We've seen it happen a lot. The money is still there.

Gox isn't dying? Are you eyes open? In fact the moment I typed this, it has seemingly crashed again.

Are BTC withdrawals working for any of you? I have withdrawn some of my coins a few hours ago and still nothing (I paid the fee for faster processing).

Mt.Gox is what's slowing the transaction. It took about 2.5 hours earlier this morning for my transaction to make it into the chain. Unfortunately your fee has no impact on Mt.Gox's side.

MtGox has effectively disabled these spam bots.

There's a 6 order per minute limit, if that is reached there's a 120 second timeout.

Once they did this things started moving.

I read it in IRC as it went live.

It took them two years to figure this out...

Orders make them money...

Right but they take a % cut. A hundred .01 orders makes them the same as a single 1.0 order, except it taxes their servers more.

Not a lot of posting. Coincidence?

my bid for 1BTC @ 42.01EUR just got filled on Gox  Tongue

That being said, I sent a couple of coins from Gox to my wallet and they haven't arrived yet. It's been 2+ hours. Is that normal now?

I sent some about 2.5 hrs ago and it just now got added.

sounds like 75 BTC. One thing I didn't see you mention was
Decide on 8:30AM EST, 3/25/2013.

on the newsletter..

what does that mean?
Regards

No idea... A poll to decide whether they mine or sell the units at the more expensive price? Interesting. I find the specificity of 830am a bit odd considering that most people won't even read the email before then.
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where's the wallet.dat file? Can't find it :( on: March 24, 2013, 06:13:20 PM
After You find the wallet.dat and back it up, read further.

Quote
Hey guys, I understand that if I make a copy of my wallet.dat file I will never lose my bitcoins.
This is not true. First thing is that wallet.dat initially generates 100 addresses (private keys). The wallet backup is good for some time until these addresses are used up. I suggest the wallet.dat to be backed up regularly using different file names or folders, to keep all versions of wallets organized in case of corruption.

Also the coins can be lost if someone hacks the computer and gets the wallet or private keys.

Exactly. Remember that if ANY of your wallet.dat copies are compromised, all your coins associated with that key are at risk, no matter how many backups you have.

Encryption+offline storage+backups seems to be pretty a good practice to me. It's also important for the system you create the key/use your wallet on to be secure as well.
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How long will it take for no-fee transaction to confirm? on: March 24, 2013, 05:58:40 PM
It depends...

Miners can/do prioritize transactions that have fees since that means more money for them if it is included in the block. Each block has a size limit (I don't remember what it is,1mb?) so if the number of transactions > block size limit, feeless transactions are the first to be left out of the block.

Just going off anecdotal experience, I would expect your free transaction to process in a few hours. It just depends on how busy the network is, and then after your transaction has been included, how quickly new blocks are found to confirm.

Have you checked out localbitcoins.com? I'd assume best way to buy in your situation is f2f using cash.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Safest place to store coins? please help a noob on: March 23, 2013, 08:20:25 AM
You can create a brain wallet using electrum and store copies of the wallet in encrypted containers.

Diversify your mediums! You can store the same key on paper/usb/and cd in case any of the others go out. Or just multiple usb drives. I keep mine in a safe with a backup copy in a friends safe at another location.  I trust him not to break the encryption :p

12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Do butterfly miners provide exact GH/s they say? on: March 15, 2013, 12:49:08 AM
As the network's overall hash rate increases, so does difficulty. The newer devices from BFL (Jalapeno etc),which haven't shipped yet, use ASIC chips which are suppose to give huge increases in efficiency and speed compared to their older devices, which is what you saw in the videos. As more and more miners trade out their video cards for ASICs from a few different vendors, the network hash rate will skyrocket increasing difficulty and dropping your gains substantially.

edit: As for the question in the topic, there has been no released benchmark or independent testing and verification of their hash rate claims. The only information available is BFL's claims.
