1  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Guiminer .5 BTC Bounty for solution! :) on: October 12, 2012, 08:25:49 PM
If you haven't opened the console, I would do that first. ( Click view, then show console )
Then start your miner and flip to the new tab to see the issues.

So which pool are you mining with?  I was making an assumption but realized you didn't say. Smiley
GUIminer has problems for me on btcguild, gives me an error message when connected to their pools in the US.
Just tested it a few minutes ago and I don't know why that is.
I use cgminer with the same pool and don't have any issues.

Not that I'm telling you to change miners, I just find it odd that the gui has problems whereas the command line does not.

Start by reading everything in the newbie guide.

Covers just about everything you've asked.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=9430.0

Your video card is the most important part of the equation ( the gpu anyways )
Ati is heads above Nvidia for mining.

GUIminer is probably the easiest program to start with.

You'll certainly want to read the above mentioned guide, while you might be able to just run the miner and it works,
most of the time there will be additional changes you need to make to see it all come together.

Copy, I see they are offering a different model for straight mining.
Something else to think about I guess.
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: OpenCL Mining and Windows XP, can it be done? on: October 11, 2012, 11:56:05 PM
It is very possible to run under XP.
I upgraded all of them since, but my first one was XP.

Try this one, think it was the one I used when I helped a friend reload one of his older machines awhile back.
Looks like the same site anyways. Smiley

I think Coinlab has a novel concept but if I'm not mistaken, they are giving the "money" generated back to whichever company they are working for and not to the individuals computer it was generated from. (Minus their cut off course.) The rigs operator will receive something virtual, based on whatever game is signed up with Coinlab and which the user is involved in.

6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which one is better: Butterflylabs or BTCFGPA? Can we trust them? on: October 11, 2012, 12:00:35 PM
They win as long as they are reputable and are really trying to help the community.
I'm more inclined to go with BTC as opposed to BFL.
BFL sounds like they had major problems with their last product release ( i.e. shipping delays).

Dual GPU is nice for a gaming rig but for mining I'll just stick with my 7970s.

It would be more convincing if there were more than just mere words on a webpage to convince me of the reality of a product.
Between BTCFPGA, Butterfly and every other person jumping on the bandwagon ( i.e. Avalon ), your telling me there isn't a single
soul in these groups/companies who doesn't want to establish a little e-peen and show a frankenstein prototype actually running to prove they aren't blowing smoke.  I know very little about ASIC production but I thought most of these went from FPGA prototyping to ASIC.
Regardless, if they already went through the foundry for pressing, wouldn't they have all the tests that are conducted there to provide the stress levels etc.

Didn't I read on the forums somewhere that you are working for/with Butterfly now, Inaba?

Let's play guess-the-alt.

I am not the alt of anyone on this board, thank you.
What I do try to do is give a little thought and research into something before shelling out tons of money on it.
I don't walk into the first car dealership I find, and just give my hard earned cash to a car salesman.
I'm more than willing to part with money for ASIC equipment, I just want to be sure I eventually get it.

Long time miner, just never bothered to post.

In response to brutchell, I guess it would depend on where you are headed with your interests.
First, I've been mining for about 2 years and I use the wallets and Mt.Gox to generate cash from the bitcoins I generate.
Second, assuming your not mining, I see it more as a means towards speculation, where your "investing" in the concept of bitcoins.
Third, your only other direction  is purchase of products and or services, which I should caution you to not go overboard with.
The whole ideal of a decentralized currency system means that you can get ripped off if you don't understand fully how everything works.
Take baby steps and test and research everything first.  Much easier to lose a few dollars as opposed to hundreds.
