AAh

I didnt realise that it was the reward that ended; that makes much more sense

as for the transaction fees; to what sort of level will they rise do you think?
4  Economy / Economics / Isnt bitcoin fundamentally unsusteainable!? on: January 12, 2013, 05:40:33 PM
There will be a point in the (far) future where the last block is mined. when this is done, there will be NO incentive for people to mine at all.

the way I understand it the bitcoin system depends on mining in order to function, so doesnt this mean that as soon as that last block is mined (or even as soon as there are too few for profitable mining) it has signalled the death of the bitcoin?

even if people mine out of good will and transactions can still happen (i am not sure, but dont transactions depend on new blocks?)
then there will be no need for innovation (like the fabled ASICs which may or may not arrive), and the whole system will weaken massively

and if this is true, how can bitcoin expect to acheive its aims if it has an expiration date?

If I am wrong (likely) then please explain why; I am here to learn

Thanks in advance

5  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: A mining-software conspiracy theory on: January 12, 2013, 05:07:56 PM
I suppose the main point is would anyone be able to tell?

TBH i dont think the software plays much of a role in the profitability of rigs as many people just throw together hardware or do not think about the power costing of leaving an old PC on 24/7 for months (i know someone who didnt think about power at all: leaving his monitor on the whole time)

I suppose the only way a "good coder" who writes this high performance miner could make it worth it would be to close-source the mining software
6  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / A mining-software conspiracy theory on: January 12, 2013, 04:24:16 PM
Hi all,

I was pondering as to why some mining software is faster than others (yeah I know, python vs C, and how sloppily it is done either way), when I had a thought!

If I knew enough about the hardcore, underlying code of mining to make a significant (lets say 10% for lulz) improvement then I would sure-as-hell not share it with anyone, as it gives me a decent edge in profitability.

equally, anyone who releases mining software has no motive to make it as efficient as it could be, because users of their software would be competing with them.

thoughts on this conspiracy theory?

could it be true?  Shocked

I would have to start by saying First I believe everybody and there grand mother should be mining bitcoins the more people mining bitcoins the stronger the NETWORK Becomes and the more secure it will be when it comes to Elites trying to Control the Money Supply... When we create our own Proof of Work where we don't need Paper Proof that is actually Bank Notes that are backed by none other than Debt... I believe people who think that Bitcoin is unsafe or is just a big bubble need to give there head a shake sure .COM was a Bubble back in the 90,s however it is still very valuable to hold onto website names that are well know for example Apple.com Imagine being the person that bought and held on to that domain till MAC came along.

Bitcoins are only profitable if we learn to work together and stop trying to profit off other peoples losses I am here to show people that power of creating our own form of currency that can be traded for Gold and Silver and anything else we may need in the future.

I am For REAL Money not Fiat Money Thank You very much!

wow

very well said sir, I wish more people were in it for the value rather than scamming a few bucks (though the trade and mining are both important)

Is there any place else to be?

nooo there's nothing more important for anyone to throw their time into Smiley

When I get my new computer (counting down the weeks) I will be able to set up a decent install of linux ('Buntu!) to try these lightweight alternatives (my laptop has a tiny 180gb HDD full and I CBA to shuffle things around to try a new program at the moment)

for now I will stick with default, I can use online until the main client is finished

TBH i was more worried that it was bugging out or doing something else terrible than about the speed of the download, but if its normal then good Smiley

So!

theres is the  "introduce yourself" thread, but thats not what I want.

Tell me fellow newbies: why did you register to this forum?

for me it was two reasons. Because I see an opportunity here for making money in the future, and I also want to try and get more people into bitcoins as I strongly agree with the goals it represents.

WHY DID YOU SUBSCRIBE HERE?
11  Other / Beginners & Help / How should the main bitcoin client behave? on: January 10, 2013, 08:08:29 PM
So!

I installed the bitcoin client (windows) and it started downloading the blockchain. some people have implied that on its start it should give you 10 addresses? well it didnt do this.

I assume i just have to wait for it to finish its "catching up"

BUT!

its been "catching up" for the past 5 days! i have 3mb/s internet!

is this normal?

I am the one and only ZomZilla
some people may possibly recognise me from elsewhere (the RDF anyone? no? OK. )

I heard about bitcoins in 2010 and for some reason thought, as it was a very new venture, it would fail miserably before it even started xD.
having re-discovered it I wish I had put my (now relatively feeble) ATI card to good use and mined some coins (if i had kept every coin, and had started when I found it I would be in the money!)

As I head off to university I am looking forward to trying to earn a few bob through mining (free internet and power) and maybe even other ventures

most of all I hope to help some people around and about this forum; though it looks like a very helpful community as it is!
