the irony here... bitcoin is essentially an altcurrency... just as fiat currency was an alt to silver/gold/etc... (and as another mentioned there are plenty of alt fiats)... and just as metals and gems were alts to whatever we used before them to facilitate trade... it's all just an evolutionary part of our interactions. and if there's one thing humans love to do, it's create... the copy stage is just a natural part of that process... copy - create - learn - innovate so, here's a real question: Why the hostility? Are these cryptocurrency experimenters hurting you? This is just a ride. We're experiencing an evolution of something... How about an alternate perspective (bear with me here, i know how you feel about alternates ) : Many altcoin creators may just be experimenting, learning something new, perhaps even new to programming in general... so they dive into creating their own altcoin for whatever reason... they make mistakes, some creations meet an early end, they try again... time goes on and the inexperienced become experienced... through trial and error (knowing how things can go wrong and how to fix it can be very helpful) and a genuine desire to create something of their own (one of the most powerful internal motivating forces we possess)... Now they're ready to offer improvements to Bitcoin. So to answer your question of what these altcoins offer that bitcoin and litecoin don't: mistake-fodder. There's a reason medical students practice on cadavers before becoming surgeons... why pilots practice in flight simulators before actually flying a plane... why divers practice in pools... or rock climbers on walls with harnesses......... i can't think of anymore... There is a point in all of this person who joined less then two months ago. Sorry you can't read between the lines. Also, this isn't biology. There isn't anything here that can't be replicated by any other shit coin or coin before or after it. Oh, did I give away the point? Wow people are dense. There is ZERO innovation. Sorry changing a few lines of code is NOT innovation. Seriously? Mistake-fodder wasn't good enough for you? Would you prefer a first year med-student or a surgeon with 10 years of experience to operate on you? So likewise, would you prefer a curious noob or someone that's done two years of trial and error on their own coin to offer improvements to bitcoin? Or is all this because you just wanna bitch about something? Keep going if that's the case, 'cos you're cracking me up!

I run a tight ship!
if by "tight ship" you mean "can't handle criticism or competition" "you just changed 6 lines of codes and rip off retards who don't know how to code" This doesn't fit into either category it did until the word "retards" was used... that bit is a little mean

Update:The guide will be coming in the next few weeks, because I'll be pretty busy. All I need to do is figure out how to compile the QT client for windows, and create a program to find the genesis block. Else I could include the nifty python script which I believe was written by the creators of freicoin. I've considered making people pay for the guide, but instead I'll just be encouraging donations from the ones who gain some knowledge from it. -- Garrett i too would donate!

Morning everyone Be sure to enter the HOURLY faucet on the site for 20 uBTC every hour. Did a few of you get your payments from yesterday? Andy B i've tried the faucet a few times over the past few days, using the same wallet address (named in my client, so i can track it) but i haven't received anything yet... the first time was on the 18th and i've done it at least once each day since then, but still nothing... is there an error? Thanks

just saw this over here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=146361.msg1562398#msg1562398Steps of becoming an altcoin operator: 1) Learn to use git/github and build bitcoin/altcoins 2) Manage at least 2 nodes on 2 computers/VM/VPS 3) Bootstrap your own network by changing pnSeed, running with dnsseed disabled, irc seed disabled, and change pchMessageStart 4) Learn to make genesis block and start up network. 5) Change default p2p port and rpc port. 6) Change address version (optional) 7) Remove checkpoints, generate master key(s). 8> Cosmetic changes. Now you can start playing with various parameter changes. Of course doing any real work from here on would require more skills and understanding of the innerworkings of bitcoin. But if you are just content with a simple clone of bitcoin/altcoins then it's done. Good luck!

It would require changing 1 line of code
ooo really? will you tell me how to do it please? sed -i "s/y >>=/y <<=/g" main.cpp
Reward doubles instead of halves.(for original bitcoin client from git) Don't forget to irrigate your nasal passages. Thanks! ::off to figure out what to do with it::

i'm not a developer but i find your attitude infectious Sunny, especially in seeing what cryptocurrencies can really accomplish. i hope your efforts in this affect all of us (and they already are!) thank you for your work! you have a great mind that's well taken care of i have enjoyed reading your posts. Thanks for the compliment Satoshi's work inspires me and I hope my work could inspire more people to join the exciting new field Well, you've certainly inspired me! I'm currently working to create an altcoin... not just a copy, but one with my own imagined characteristics. Not because i feel like anything is wrong with any of the cryptocurrencies in general, not even with hopes for my altcoin's success, but because i like to make things... especially things that fascinate me... and i want to see what would happen. I think it'll be fun. So thank you for the inspiration! (it spreads fast) If you ever have the time, i'm open to a lesson (i'm an anomalously quick learner) Now to continue figuring out how it's done... (if my current comprehension were a loading bar, i'd be about about 30%... some of that from reading your posts)

Just finished reading the whole forum... Eagerly awaiting the guide. Thanks for doing this! A question... Is it mandatory that the number of coins a block releases halves? Could it instead double? Or perhaps... fibonacci? Thanks.

Sorry for the newbie question, but what is a CoinURL link? Is it just a link to a site that offers free Bitcoins? CoinURL ( https://coinurl.com/ ) is a site similar to other URL shortening sites, except with a coinurl link, you receive a small amount of bitcoin when someone clicks on your link. When they click on the link, they are shown an ad of another site. After a few seconds, a "skip ad" button appears and they can carry on to the site. I think they have to actually follow through to the site they were trying to get to in order for you to get the bitcoin for their click tho, but i'm not sure on this part. Hope that helps.

I'm not saying that it's for profit, but that for many sites like these there is an ulterior motive to offering free bitcoins. While offering uBTC is really not profitable for anybody, I just don't see why giving bitcoins away can help, given that the community has recently exploded in the last week. It may help spark interest, and I do congratulate you on that, but I am just wary on all of these new sites that have spawned in the last week. Plus the supposed company scams and all.
It's just hard to trust anybody on the internet who offers anything free or worthwhile without thinking there's something behind the curtains. I've been around BTC for a while and I've been seeing scam sites since 2011. I'm not trying to bust your chops, I'm just a skeptic.
As long as you get tutorials set up for a various number of topics/miners/software, etc., your site will be super helpful for beginners.
If new sites of all sorts weren't popping up, wouldn't that just mean that bitcoin is stagnant? That no one was interested? New sites means new people are interested. It's up to personal discernment when it comes to which sites to trust. As for giving away free bitcoin, even free uBTC... philanthropy is a real thing. Some people are just generous. It's often those who have the least, that share the most. It comes from knowing what it's like to have nothing or close to it, and emerging from that experience with compassion instead of greed.

I've done the faucet two or three time... after seeing the link to the site in a facebook group. Love an hourly faucet. I quite like the site. I'm not a beginner, so it was easy for me to just skim over the information, but it's a nice, succinct compilation. The list of free bitcoin sites itself appears much cleaner than just a straight list of links, which is often what you'll find. And the brief starter info with links to the bitcoin client software on the homepage is a good touch. A suggestion for the Get Bitcoin part on the home page: perhaps it could link to another page describing the complexities of purchasing bitcoin with USD and maybe even explaining why the process is so complex in the first place (most due to regulations over fiat currencies). I suggest this because i found a lot of frustration in trying to buy bitcoin until i understood why it is so difficult. With that understanding, it doesn't bother me so much and now i'm shifting my focus to earning bitcoin by accepting it as payment. I honestly think it is a good start and didn't see anything "scammy" about it. Then again, i've seen coinurl enough to know why people are using it. (I've been trying to think of ways around that because i really don't want to use it for my site.) I believe their distrust is either due to a lack of understanding, some past experience they've yet to release, or they're just trolling. Either way, their negativity is their own choice. Money does not have such a value as men have placed upon it. Keep up the good work, mate. You're doing just fine.

Hello! Was recently re-introduced to bitcoin as a useful tool for an artist ecovillage i'm creating - Torus Artist Ecovillage - and i'm pleasantly surprised with its progress.
