1  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GPU Temps and overclocking on: April 07, 2013, 12:52:08 AM
I got my first mining rig setup recently and have a few questions for the experts. I am running two Sapphire 7950s. They come OC from the factory at 925 MHz. and dish out a decent hash rate of near 500. I am using MSI Afterburner and have been playing around with overclocking. At the factory settings GPU1 runs at about 80C and GPU2 70C. It appears that the exhaust from GPU2 (the bottom card) is heating up the card on top (GPU1). Question one, how does overclocking come into play other than the clock speed of the GPU? Do I need to do anything with the GPU memory clock? Question two, what recommendations do you guys have for bringing down the temp of GPU1? Right now I'm just using a box fan with less than stellar results. Link to a pic of my rig is below. Thanks for the help!

Use CGMiner and let it manage your engine and memory clocks and your temps.

Are there any guides already on the forum to go about doing this? I've played with CGMiner a little, but nothing advanced.

Anyone have an X6500 or other FPGAs for sale?

PM me.

Thanks all!

Thanks for the input. Any idea what watt PSU I would need for two 7950s?

I have an old Dell OptiPlex 755 with a Core2Duo. It has one PCIe x16 lane and one x1 lane. with a PCIe x1 to x16 adapter and sufficient power supply could I run two 7950s from this computer? Does the motherboard specifically need to have crossfire support? Would I need a dummy plug for one of the video cards?

I may overclock.

I was also checking out the Vapor-X model. Looks like it has better cooling and 50Mhz high core clock when boosted. Not sure if its worth the extra money.

Could this one potentially have a higher hash rate?

Yah, I've been looking at that wiki page. Not much info on brands though.

I'm going to try to make a GPU rig before ASICs skyrocket the difficulty. I'm thinking of getting 7950s. I'm looking at this one particularly.

brand recommendations? Anyone have an approx hash rate?

Thanks for that

I just found out about Bitcoins not to long ago. I am super excited about the potential of this currency and am very interested in getting into mining. I'm super conflicted with ASICs impending which will increase the complexity. Do I spend the money on a GPU miner before ASICs are mainstream to get into the game? I don't see myself breaking even before the complexity jumps. Do I look into FPGA rigs...? I'd rather not pre-order a BFL. I want to put my money to work now!

Recommendations?

Just got into the Bitcoin world! Super excited about the possibilities of this currency! I hope to start mining soon...if I can make it profitable before ASICs come out more. Any generous member out there can shoot me my first BTC!  Smiley
