The 250K bootstrap.dat saved me lots of time while I effed around with my server not realizing I was dealing with a bad hard drive. I was deleting all block data and reloading it from bootstrap.dat probably twice a day. I've overridden my global upload limit on the updated torrent so that I can help support this even better. Thank you.

I will download and support this.

edit:

Can't get that linearize.py script to work and I haven't connected to anyone in the swarm yet. Sigh.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Abe 0.7: Open Source Block Explorer Knockoff on: July 13, 2013, 04:40:01 PM
Hey I've been having more luck since starting fresh with abe and the blockchain. I'm trying to get abe to use RPC but it always says either "catch_up_rpc: abort" or "Exception: RPC load failed." The bitcoin client is the first time I've ever seen RPC so I am very unfamiliar with it. It does seem, however to be a better way for abe to update the database instead of reading the blockfiles over and over again.

So my question is this. How do I make it work? I have a ~/.bitcoin/bitcoin.conf which contains the rpc username and password, and told it to listen for rpc on port 8332 (plus other settings). That port is correctly forwarded in my router. In abe.conf I have (among other things)

datadir += [{
        "dirname": "/home/<myname>/.bitcoin",
        "loader": "rpc",    # See the comments for default-loader below.
        "chain": "Bitcoin"
      }]

Is there any more information you need? Is there someway I can tell abe to connect to bitcoind with RPC over a specific port?

Thanks for your help.

Matt
7  Other / Off-topic / [ann] mineoas.us - new minecraft server, hosting private worlds for you on: July 11, 2013, 12:11:42 AM
TL;DR: connect to minecraft with game.mineoas.us, connect to teamspeak with ts.mineoas.us. Looking for people to help test. Read below.

Hi! I'm almost done putting together a minecraft server. It will be supported entirely by bitcoin. I will attempt to sum up quickly with a bulleted list.

  • Vanilla. Only basic mods such as essentials and multiverse. This is minecraft how it was meant to be played.
  • Main world: uneditable at first, but eventually opened up to good builders to showcase their work
  • Free world: open to everyone, basic survival with no clunky grief protection (coming soon a free creative world)
  • Your world: For a very small monthly fee I will host a private world for you. Make it however you want--creative/survival, everyone is an admin/you are god. Perfect for you and a few friends. Perks can include access to backups, worldedit, etc. I'm imaging the base price being $1/month with $1 increments for more features (payable in bitcoin of course).

Right now I'm looking for someone(s) to help me work out the private world feature and make sure I have all the permissions and automation down. In return, I will give you and up to two of your friends access to your own private for free (I imagine for the first month). If you're interested in helping, find my number at spawn in the main world and text me, find me in-game or in teamspeak, or PM me on bitcointalk or reddit. I'm not always online so texting/PM would be the better options.

Of course, everyone is free to come on and play on the free map, ask questions, etc.
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 715 remaining on: July 03, 2013, 03:06:47 AM
steamboat:

I want to begin the process of changing my shipping address. I do understand that you will not change any of the information other than the shipping address, so if anyone was to sell their chips/spot in line, they'd have to act as a middleman. My question is this:

Should I 1) submit a signed message asking the shipping address change, then go to the secret website and order the assembly options with the new shipping address.  .... Or 2) go to the secret website and order the assembly options with the current shipping address, then submit a signed message asking both shipping address to be changed? I'm hoping option 1 is okay, as it seems like it would be the easier option for you logistically.

Thanks again steamboat. Maybe you could describe this process a little more clearly in the OP in case other people want to do the same thing.

Steamboat, you are the best. I really appreciate what you are doing and hope you get well soon. Thank you for the updates.

Do you have a beer fund or some address I can donate to? PM me if you don't want to make it public for some reason.

Thanks again
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 715 remaining on: July 01, 2013, 06:06:48 AM
I'm not sure if it is appropriate to post this here, but I'm willing to sell 48 of my batch 5 chips if anyone wants to cut a little bit in line. According to the OP you can change your shipping address up to two times, so there shouldn't be a problem.

PM me if interested. I'll be asleep for a little bit, but I'll respond ASAP.

Hope this is proof enough:

Message: I, pointychimp, have 48 chips preordered in steamboat's 5th group buy. The transaction from me (using the signing address) to the batch 5 payment address is here: f7ca1b88029fcf3fa27890c124a54df3c1bd3ee422a20cf5ec2629e93a394aea. I am willing to sell my spot in line for a very tiny mark up.

I keep getting a "RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded" error. It happens every time I start abe up, and every time I access a page the error shows up in the console.
This has been on the to-do list for a long time.  I'll give it another look, but as I recall, it would take the better part of a day to code and test.

First, run Abe once with --rescan in case that solves it.  If you know Python, you can try sys.setrecursionlimit(300000) as suggested here.  (Replace 300000 with a few more than the number of blocks in your chain, or try lower numbers until either success or another kind of crash.)

I think this happens when the block files are "very" out of sequence: when a sequence of 1000 or more blocks all occur before one of their common ancestors.  Could this be the case with your block files?  Maybe this is normal for the latest Bitcoin versions, which I have not tested.  Is there anything unusual about how your block files were created, or did you download the chain again after running Abe the first time?

I don't think I did anything unusual. I think I did copy block files from one of my computers to my server in order to speed up the chain download time. Problem is I don't remember if I did that before running abe for the first time or after. I'm currently letting abe rescan. If this doesn't work, I might just bite the bullet, remove everything from the mySQL database, delete my .bitcoin/ directory, download the blockchain the conventional way, and try again.

Thanks for the help. I'll try to remember to report back if I ever get this solved!

I keep getting a "RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded" error. It happens every time I start abe up, and every time I access a page the error shows up in the console. I start abe with the following command:

python -m Abe.abe --config abe-my.conf

and the (censored) contents of abe-my.conf are as follows:

dbtype MySQLdb
connect-args {"user":"*****","db":"*****","passwd":"*****"}
upgrade
host *****
port 2750
datadir = /****/****/.bitcoin

What more info do you need, if any? Is there something in python I have to change?
13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 2,610 remaining on: June 08, 2013, 04:07:04 AM
Since everyone else seems to be doing it even though I'm pretty sure it's not required, here's some info from the buy order I'm placing as we speak.

Chip amount: 64 (I'm an idiot) 48
Payment amount: 4.128
Assembly type: Assembly and DIY kit

14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 2,834 remaining on: June 07, 2013, 05:34:55 AM
I apologize if this has been answered and I have overlooked it in this thread. I would like to know the size of each board which is supposed to be 16 chips? How large are all those when placed all together? I have tried to check online and search forums on how they are size wise but have been able to see one. If anyone has a link to such information it would be very much appreciated.

I believe it's about 10cm x 10cm. If you get one of the assembly/kit options, they'll be installed on a K16. See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=190731.0 to track the development of the board.
15  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 2,834 remaining on: June 07, 2013, 04:34:45 AM
Has Bkkcoins provided anything more than drawings for his K16 boards? I'm eager to place an order, but I'm nervous. Also, this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=227103.0) doesn't shine a very good light on Avalon. If steamboat doesn't receive any boards for a given batch #, can we expect a refund or anything like that?

http://pcpartpicker.com is your best friend. I still use it as search engine of sorts even though I'm very confident in my abilities to pick out compatible parts.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: And... CRASH! on: April 28, 2013, 08:27:08 PM
I believe we will see 160$ this week for bitcoins and 5$ for LTC...If LTC were trade on MTGOX, we will reach 20$ easily

My personal opinion is that none of the cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin are being taken seriously enough by a high enough percentage of their users in order to last. I recently converted the few LTC I mined to BTC and am waiting for them to return to their normal price. Then maybe I'll buy a couple more.

I'm pretty sure that's what most people are doing with LTC and other smaller currencies.
18  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: April 28, 2013, 08:20:49 PM
I still can't beleive I was about one click away from ordering one myself a while back. I still don't know what stopped me. I just hate being the last one to get in a long line I guess.

That's what's stopping me. Right now the jalapeno would be pretty good compared to what I have now. But by the time I get it... not so much.

They've shipped their ASIC Jalepeno recently... doesn't look like a scam anymore.

What's funny is that the guy who was first in line and posted his unpacking video on youtube bought the Jalepeno as a supplementary thing to his singles.

I created an account awhile ago with the intention of participating/asking questions/etc. But was turned off by the newb trap. So... here I am with a relatively difficult question trying to work my way out.
