7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How does one install the bitcoin wallet on a web server from shell? on: April 15, 2013, 03:48:34 PM
I'd have to agree-- trusting a shared hosting environment with a Bitcoin wallet is a huge no-no. However, I personally wouldn't be worried about the hosting provider stealing your wallet-- I'd worry a lot more about the fact that it's a *shared hosting environment*. This means that your wallet is sitting on the same box that other people use. If there's ever a privilege escalation vulnerability in a piece of software on the machine (and trust me, there will be at some point. There's always going to be some time before they patch new exploits that come out), your funds are simply not safe.

I'd recommend you build bitcoind from source and run its tests. You can find links to the latest release here: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin

If you really don't want to install it from source, you can also run apt-get update; apt-get install bitcoind.

Once you do that, you should run bitcoind securely in the background (*do not* allow it to listen for connections coming from the Internet-- only from your own machine or network). Then you can communicate with it via the JSON RPC, allowing you to interact with the rest of the Bitcoin network.

There's an init.d script here that you can use, so you don't have to manually pass in the correct arguments each time and prepare the daemon to run: https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=965.0

The first time you run bitcoind, you'll notice that there's no output. This is normal as bitcoind attempts to download blocks from the network. It may take a while. Once your node is fully synced with the rest of the network, you'll be able to start using it.

Good luck! Smiley

15  Economy / Digital goods / [WTS] BigBitBets.com for 0.1 BTC on: April 10, 2013, 11:02:47 AM
Long story short, I registered this domain hoping to start a bitcoin betting service. Turns out my state laws heavily frown upon that, and after talking to an attorney I think I'm going to take the safe route with this one.

So I'm looking to sell my domain BigBitBets.com, for 0.1 BTC. I have full ownership over the domain (I can verify this if you'd like) and will transfer it to you.

I've also started writing some software that would have powered the site. If you're interested in acquiring that as well, let me know and I can include it. It's probably not worth much-- it's not finished.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with Coinbase.com API - Please =) on: April 09, 2013, 08:32:12 PM
Eric thank you so so much that was what I needed. Now to figure out how to include value="%[PAY_AMOUNT]%" into the price section to replace the button[price_string] so it can create the price that is dynamically created before they click the buy button. I am one step closer so thank you.

No problem! Glad I could help.
17  Other / Off-topic / Re: I sold all my bitcoins before the massive price jump. on: April 06, 2013, 09:56:20 PM
The price is pretty high right now. How am I supposed to know it's not just a bubble?

How were you supposed to know to hold on to your Bitcoins last time? Become more educated this time around, but I think there's always a high amount of pure luck (being in the right place at the right time) when it comes to speculation. Good luck!
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: cant login to mtgox on: April 05, 2013, 03:24:54 PM
You need to contact them again. There's nothing anybody can do except them if you've lost the password or are unable to login for whatever reason.
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Help with Coinbase.com API - Please =) on: April 05, 2013, 03:11:22 PM
I'll do the best I can! Wink

Before I jump into the API stuff, though, I just want to point out that uou can generate a checkout button or page with Coinbase's Merchant Tools. Simply click "Merchant Tools" on the left hand side menu. Also see https://coinbase.com/docs/merchant_tools/payment_buttons

The documentation explains "For more advanced integrations, it's sometimes necessary to create many buttons with different prices. In these cases you'll want to use the buttons API." If that's what you need:

Buttons can be embedded in a page using some embed code. There are a couple of other options like button size that you can use, but this is the template for a basic Coinbase Buy button:

Code:
<a class="coinbase-button" data-code="4d4b84bbad4508b64b61d372ea394dad" href="https://coinbase.com/checkouts/4d4b84bbad4508b64b61d372ea394dad">Pay With Bitcoin</a>
<script src="https://coinbase.com/assets/button.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

Firstly, we'll need an API key to tell Coinbase who we are when we're asking them to create a button for us. Go to https://coinbase.com/account/integrations and enable and generate an API key.

Secondly, you'll notice that there's this "code", 4d4b84bbad4508b64b61d372ea394dad. This is what tells Coinbase what you're selling and makes your button unique. To create a new code, we need to send an HTTP Post request to https://coinbase.com/api/v1/buttons

You can use HURL to test creating one:

http://www.hurl.it/

Type in https://coinbase.com/api/v1/buttons?api_key=[YOUR_API_KEY_HERE} and select "POST". POST requests typically *create* data, where as GET requests *get* data. You'll want to pass in some params, as the documentation outlines. To do this, click "add param" in Hurl and try adding different params that the documentation explains. button[name], button[price_string], and button[price_currency_iso] are all required.

Here's an example of what it should look like:

The response is going to be JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), which is an object that contains a bunch of attributes and corresponding values. The most important one we're concerned with is the "code". This is going to replace "4d4b84bbad4508b64b61d372ea394dad" in the above example. So in my example, the embed code would be:

Code:
<a class="coinbase-button" data-code="2ecbe87514b75571aa4e09983ebdfb90" href="https://coinbase.com/checkouts/2ecbe87514b75571aa4e09983ebdfb90">Pay With Bitcoin</a>
<script src="https://coinbase.com/assets/button.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

A word of caution about using the API: Never let anybody know your API key. If you'd like to create new buttons on the fly, always do it "out of band". That is, have your web server make the request, NOT the user.

Hope that helps! Smiley

Most (all?) marketplaces have APIs, which allow you to query data that they present in a standard format (JSON).

JSON stands for "javascript object notation", and it's just that-- it's one or more objects in JS with attributes and their corresponding values. There's a great article that explains how to access attributes and why JSON is so useful here: http://www.copterlabs.com/blog/json-what-it-is-how-it-works-how-to-use-it/

Because these APIs all return JSON, you can write JS that runs in the browser and can do things with the data. You can also process JSON server-side of course, but it sounds like you want your charts to appear in the browser. Some APIs you can grab stuff from:

You can also get JSON of your wallet's data via JSON-RPC, which is pretty awesome IMO: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/API_reference_(JSON-RPC)

If you're having a hard time understanding JS, it might be worthwhile to learn the basics of JS here: http://www.w3schools.com/js/

And if you don't want to invest the time and/or energy into working with JS, you can always grab some pre-made charts here: http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#rg60ztgSzm1g10zm2g25zv

The charts are licensed under creative commons. You should double check, but I'm 90% sure you'd be allowed to embed them on your own site without any problems.
