1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency - 0.8.8.6 on: April 17, 2015, 06:41:57 PM

I never want to see this happen.  Living in NSA America is bad enough.  Liberty and Privacy first.

If one is using propriety DRM infected, locked down, systems it will happen. if one is not then it will not happen. The biggest threat to freedom coming out of the USA is not the NSA, it is the MPAA and any organization that uses DRM to "protect" its "premium" content. Understanding the real threat is the first step to dealing with it.

A very good of thumb. If your device supports DRM at the operating system level in any way then any and all information on said device is accessible to the NSA.

Edit: Android is a perfect example. If one roots the device, a must to protect one's Liberty and Privacy, then the DRM on the device no longer "protects" the content providers. One simply cannot expect a computer or device to have two masters. The choice is DRM or Liberty and Privacy but not both.

DRM can never protect content.  The content needs to be viewed, therefore all methods required to remove DRM exist on the device.  There is nothing anyone can do to fix this - the idea of DRM is a dream.

How will the US deal with "privacy" companies based in other countries if they go through with this? Ban all encryption software from other countries? And how will this be enforced?

Doesn't really seem possible to me.

does openalias works with separated subdomains? mymonero.com could make some extra moneroj selling personalized mymonero.com/user openaliases.

yeah, I actually talked with fluffy about this and he said they had thought about it, but they have bigger fish to fry. I.e., it is doable, but would take time away from actually developing the core, so here we are again, monero being awesome.

Yeah, i've experimented with up to 1 level of subdomain so far... so blah.blippity.com

I think after that its just too many periods. I own paymonero.com and payxmr.com . If anyone wants an open alias there, let me know. I'll give away the first .... I dunno.... 25 for free for.... a year? After that, 30 XMR for 5 years? Currently, I don't have DNS-SEC set up (because i have to pay godaddy to do it because the site I registered on doesn't have them), so people will get that warning when they use it.

i wonder if my registrar will care that I'll have a bajillion text entries....

sure, you'll have to trust me, but if you want to avoid having to register a domain (and subsequent divulge personal information) this is one route.

I've been pondering though how to automate a type of security, wherein you would be notified if the dns entry became compromised (e.g., my password was hacked, the registrar was hacked... hrm, perhaps one could put the information into the monero blockchain (first X digits of address, with enough space left for the open alias address..) ... or this could just be an overcomplicated way of saying to just use namecoin as the registrar.... .

Most registrars do have DNS entry limits, and it's often annoying to add entries.  You may want to look into hosting your own (redundant) DNS.
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Linux scrypt mining with AMD Radeon HD 7950s on: February 04, 2014, 07:23:53 PM
Hello,

I'm receiving a few AMD Radeon HD 7950s soon, and looking to build a box for scrypt mining and some other parallel applications.  Does anyone have any recommendations for cheap motherboards, cpus, case etc. with confirmed linux compatibility that can easily host 3-4 of these?

Thank you.

Sounds great.

What will the adjustments be, exactly?

5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: FireFlyCoin Launched! on: November 16, 2013, 01:39:33 AM
I have received my payouts finally.  Thanks!
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: FireFlyCoin Launched! on: November 15, 2013, 01:37:04 AM
Haven't gotten any payouts from the pool yet, when do they occur?

Also, a recommendation.  Go through the source code again and carefully turn "bitcoin" into "fireflycoin" where appropriate.  It's changed in some places, but persists in others - I see it in the conf files for example.

US. Central.

Takes 30 seconds to load a page.. They do load, but it's a pain.  Especially when I'm not sure where things are located, and the widgets end up timing out or never loading.

Pool site is unbelievably slow.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple: A pre-mine? Does it matter? on: May 06, 2013, 03:56:21 PM
The gateway software contains a rippled binary I believe.  If so, they have distributed it.
There really is no "gateway software". There's just the rippled software. To my knowledge, we have not distributed the binary to anyone who has not also received the source. In any event, the only licenses the rippled software source code is subject to are:

1) The OpenCoin license.
2) The OpenSSL license.
3) The Boost license.
4) The LevelDB license.
5) The Bitcoin license.

Rippled also uses SQLite3 and json-cpp which are in the public domain. Additional licenses might apply to the JavaScript unit tests.

I stand corrected, thanks for clearing this up.  The Ripple wiki https://ripple.com/wiki/Rippled_build_instructions lists ctags http://ctags.sourceforge.net/ as an optional package, which has a GPL license.   Will this be respected, or does its optional status mean it is not necessary?
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple: A pre-mine? Does it matter? on: May 05, 2013, 05:14:50 AM
They're not distributing rippled, so there can be no violation. You're not mandated to share your modifications on free software, butwhen you choose to do it, you have to follow the rules.
I don't think you can violate a license with code running on your server, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Go ahead and keep my overpayment.

Confirmed, thanks.  Smiley

Anyone else with overpayments please confirm here so I can process it at once, thanks!

Is there a list of overpayments? If I overpayed, take the extra as a tip Johnk.

13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you spend your coins on? on: April 28, 2013, 02:36:32 AM

Please try to buy WITHOUT Bitspend first. Although it's great and easy, Bitspend doesn't add much to the bitcoin ecosystem since it's not an organic adoption.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What do you spend your coins on? on: April 28, 2013, 02:34:52 AM
hanging on to them. Either they are gonna be worth a ton or nothing one day

Good idea, but, the value increases by the amount being used. If every one held on to their bitcoins they'd become worthless.

K.

This has made me wonder about the problem of people who die with a considerable bitcoin balance? Since no one else knows their passwords for their wallet, are these bitcoins just as dead as their old owner?

Yes.  This increases deflation of the currency, but it shouldn't be an issue since Bitcoins are easily divisible.  In the scenerio that too many coins are lost, μBTC might be used.

Anyways, if you have a lot of BTC, make sure your family knows how to access and secure the funds if you should die suddenly.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to use the poclbm GUI Miner Mac .app application? on: April 28, 2013, 02:11:57 AM
To mine using a pool, you need to first register an account on a pool site.

Here are a list of pools:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Comparison_of_mining_pools

I use slush's.  The site you choose will determine the hostname, port, username, and password.  You can then run the software with those values to begin mining.

You should know there is a minimum withdraw amount from most (all???) pools.  Because of this, it is likely you will need to mine for a long time with the current difficulty to withdraw any profits.
16  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as Escrow! Send coins to confirm! on: April 26, 2013, 10:36:11 PM
So, is it only multiples of 10,000? If we have it filled by sunday, is it still possible to order more than 10,000? I'm doing everything I can to get some BTC Sunday, but what happens if it gets filled today? Does the Sunday deadline hold?

Thanks! Just trying to figure out how I can make this happen. I REALLY want in. I'm bumping my order up to 100 pieces. (8.Huh btc)

I can float you for the order (up to 10 BTC) for a fee of 1.5%, if you can give me some assurance the transfer is in progress and the order will be in my name until you pay me (and if JohnK/ragingazn is okay with changing the name midorder).

Let me know what you think.

PS: I've sent out the PM's around 7 hours ago. I have a few confirmations in with various timelines, hopefully this gets done before this Friday. This is starting to make me feel like the organizer now.  Undecided

Where's the OP?  I'd feel better if he were answering these questions.  The last I head is that he said something about being a part of a group of engineers that have big asic plans.  I'd like to know more about those plans, (as may of us here will need that kind of expertise.  Myself included).  Are any of them in the bitcointalk community?  Just hearing from them here would go miles towards building trust here.  John is only responsible for the coins.  Ragingazn has ultimate responsibility for the chips.  And, yes I do agree with these terms.

I'm in for 20 coins.  Raging has said he will post his coins (about 40) in a few days.

JohnK and I are taking turns pretty much lol - I am up when he goes to sleep and he's up when I'm still asleep.

Yes I've been talking to local engineers to start up a project. Everyone's excited about this. Nothing is set in stone yet but I will let you know once the team is put together and our website is up etc. But the plan is that by the time the chips start shipping we would be able to offer a service to build ASIC machines using your chips that you ordered. You obviously would have to pay for the extra parts (PCB / PSU etc.) and labor. But that's all in the future for now. I am just planning ahead while we wait!

I guess the major goal with this would be to match BFL's prices or lower after additional parts and construction.

Yes. Please calculate how much chips you would like (take a quick look at the spreadsheet) and send accordingly. To get an even amount of chips, you'll have to send a bit more or less than 50BTC exactly.

Looks like 52.802 for approx 660 chips.  Look about right?   (entered 51.48 in column B)

(660/12.8205128205128) * 1.025 + 0.035 = 52.802

That is correct, according to my calculations.

I am also interested in shipping the chips to burnin.  His post says he's working with you ragingazn628.

Once we get the order in, let us know how to coordinate shipping to burnin for creating the PCB boards.

I would like more info on this as well, after the order is placed.
