I listened to a Man City fan podcast a few weeks ago, and he argued that City's failed recruitment plan basically cost them a lot. A rebuild season basically means they failed to sign the best players. While I don't entirely agree with his pov, I think it makes sense to think that recruitment failed City a bit. They failed to rejuvenate their squad at the right time even though they managed to sign Halland and so on to replace key players like Aguero. They failed to do the same thing on other positions, and they scouts unknown players instead of proven stars.
I'm also in agreement with the opinion that, Manchester City didn't get their transfer window right. They let some players leave but failed to replace them with the perfect players for that position. Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne are good examples of what I'm saying. These quality players left and how did they replace them? With players who are obviously not upgrades to them. Also that of explosive fullbacks like Kyle Walker and Co. I agree with what you've said. Pep's mistake this season was his overconfidence in selling key players, even though they could still provide the best for Man City. At the same time, Pep also failed to bring in new players, as no new players have been able to fill the void vacated by the previous players. We can see this now Man City game isn't fully solid with new players. The players recruited have arguably failed to fit into Pep Guardiola scheme.
