1  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 2 x Bitmain Antminer U3 not running the same speeds? on: January 16, 2015, 09:53:07 PM
Yea I have 2. I opened one and cleaned all the paste very preciclsy and with proper tools.

It seems to have fixed the problem. But now the other one also runs fine.

So its wierd. Still trying to work out.

Some people say to use a powered USB since the U3 might use a bit more and cause reset on the USB port and force a "crash" on the driver.
2  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 2 x Bitmain Antminer U3 not running the same speeds? on: January 15, 2015, 09:11:35 AM
Does it really matter? Its not a cheap Chinese thing for sure. I used it to run a server for a while with 6HDD's I know its capable of powering the units. But maybe I am just being ignorant?

What make would you recommend and why?
3  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 2 x Bitmain Antminer U3 not running the same speeds? on: January 13, 2015, 08:39:30 PM
computer power supply 450watt
4  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 11, 2015, 09:30:39 PM
With a new cable, not the one included, it seemed to work again for a while. There's two connected, to two different USB buses, but i'll look into the the powered usb advise too.

After a while however, i got this:

[2015-01-11 20:59:14] AMU0: invalid nonce - HW error
[2015-01-11 21:15:01] AMU0: invalid nonce - HW error
[2015-01-11 22:12:15] AMU 7 SendWork usb write err:(-1) LIBUSB_ERROR_IO
[2015-01-11 22:12:15] AMU 7 attempted reset got err:(0) LIBUSB_SUCCESS

Then the now troublesome unit zombied. Got it up again briefly after some reset/un/re-plugs. Then it just zombied again.

AMU ? It doesnt seem to be detecting the U3 properly. It should be saying AU3.  Are you using cgminer 4.9.0 with out any settings to test. Also the USB should be as short as possible, long ones seem to have issues.

I have 2 running with 2 short USB cables that I bought seperatly. I had the same errors as yours with the stock cable and then some other longer cable. I suspect its voltage related.

Well unfortunately something went wrong with my test and both miners stopped mining. When I went to inspect the issue the PSU was off.. Nothing on the PSU was running. Not sure what happened, maybe the PSU is faulty.

I will try another power supply if I can but I can confirm it was running at least 36 hours.

@irobb how is your looking? Still going? Smiley
6  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 10, 2015, 07:01:27 PM
Nearly 48 hours and still stable.

Stock and cleaned up. All I did with the stock is put a fan under the heatsink.

Both going well but now at 61.9gh/s instead of 62.5gh/s
7  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 10:20:44 PM
I am happy with 62

I read that going more than that starts to dramaticlly increase the wattage at the wall. currently it works out  slightly less than 1watt per 1gh/s (about 0.95watt @ 800mV). i have a watt-o-meter and my PC and the 2 U3 are draining 162watts 24/7 from which 40watts is the PC then 60watts x 2 from the other PSU

I had a duff one form the same guy I bought these two. I was lucky to find them cheap on amazon because I know if something went bad returns would be a simple.. and my hunch was correct. The second one was running 45ghs and there was nothing I could do to increase it. Returned and the 3rd one runs like the 1st. No problem at all.

24hour mark now broken and niether the fixer upper nor the stock one ZOMBIED... Interesting.
8  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 06:56:57 PM
Smiley I honestly think it's caused by the excessive compound.  We shall see. Grin The one I cleaned is still running, no zombies.

You might have seriosly cracked this case wide open mate. Its nearly 24 hours and by now I have to be resetting something... still going well

250MHz @ 800mV = ~62.5Gh/s - Stable!
9  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 04:54:26 PM
Thats awesome man! If mine does the same thing then we can almost for sure say it is the excess chinese spunk applied to the units.

RMA Reason: To much spunk causing micro short. Please wipe thoroughly before finishing up.
10  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 03:48:38 PM
Well, its still early days. Running since 21:52 08/01 ... nothing happened yet.

Usually the first one fell over after 12 hours. I am running 1 stock and one "fixer upper" - Both still going good.

I didn't change anything else so that we can keep this experiment clean.

The one I cleaned seemed to fall over more frequently... so something has definitely changed but 24 is the record to break, then 48, then at least a week!
11  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 11:43:32 AM
From my "CPU Thermal Pasting" days, I thought the whole idea was to use the stuff VERY sparingly, even more so than the very small "new blobs" shown. In the CPU days it almost seemed like an art form to get the amount "just right", certainly nothing like what was done at the factory.

That is right. I used to work at IT shops for years and this was treated very critical! No noobs allowed.

But I have seen Noobs smear the entire tubes onto the processors and there was no issue with these PC's for years. Just viruses.
So I kind of got paralysed to this "extreme" application and jsut put a blob that wont go allover the place like on these Ants, I mean these Ants are mental, I dont think I ever seen anything like THIS before. Even the wors noob application didnt go allover the motherboard it was just like oozing out from under the heatsink.

Cleaning this stuff is the worst. If you look at my img where I cleaned it you can still see all the past inbetween the tiny 0.125 pitched pins. There is no way to get that out without intesive brushing wiht tooth brush, like the other poster did. I didnt go that far because it seems like that may have been a bit TOO much.
12  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 09, 2015, 09:44:55 AM
OK I opened mine up and cleaned all that paste out, I forgot the stuff between the heatsink and the PCB..... shouldnt matter that much on that side.

Arctic Silver (Silver Oxide thermal paste)

You should NOT use AS5 on a unit like this which has exposed pins and other electronics on the PCB. AS5 is conductive and may cause problems. Additionally, its thermal conductivity is only a 1/10th of what they claim it to be, is 4x less than other competitors and up to 5x more expensive. You can see the full independent paper here, results on page 8.

Good to know. I did check make sure it wasn't touching the pins.
Very interesting white paper.
So what do you recommend then to be used generally?
13  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 08, 2015, 10:02:25 PM
OK I opened mine up and cleaned all that paste out, I forgot the stuff between the heatsink and the PCB..... shouldnt matter that much on that side.

This thermal paste is like stuffed inbetween the pins of the ASIC's... I couldnt clean it out without getting more aggressive and the last thing I needed is to kill an ASIC so I did my best by gently cleaning it for an hour and using alco wipes and some other SMD tools.

Fused spunk allover the fucking place

Arctic Silver (Silver Oxide thermal paste)

Chilling at 62.5ghs on top of his brother

Ill let it run till tomorrow. We see what happens.
14  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 08, 2015, 01:25:58 PM
Update:

It's been running almost 24 hours with no zombie but the hashrate is lower now...

I suspect that the thermal compound is the culprit of the zombie.  It was spread all over the board on top of the surface mounted devices under the heat sink which probably caused the instability issues as it would heat up and create a medium for a short to take place...

Can someone else take theirs apart, clean off like I did, and see if that fixes the zombie issue?

Hi- I will take mine apart today and see what is going on in there.

Last night I started the two using 250mhs and 800mV  and they have been running at 62.5ghs pretty nicely. about 12 hours later the one ZOMBIED.  I also created even MORE cooling to the heatsinks in like a custom wind tunnel design...

So I will take it apart and clean it. I have very good expeirence in electronics so I wont noob this up. Also got all the correct tools and liquids etc to do a proper job.

I suspect it wont help... the next route after this will be a powered USB hub. And I will connect that hub to the PC without the 5V channel and let the HUB power the units. Also put them on a 4 hour timer. turn of for 15 minutes and restart the whole thing. If I turn of the USB hub power then that should emualte pulling out the cable and restarting the MCU on next power up. I got all this on a sperate power adapter so I will just turn everything off, restart cgminer with some scripts and restart it. Then I can keep these settings at 62.5ghs and it will have some short resting periods (i hope that wont cause to much PCB strees) and it will restart and keep running till the cows come home.

OH- by the way, the same thing happened to me when it droped from ~60 to ~45 because of the voltage settings. Recomended is close to  800mv using a nice PSU like a computer one. I run mine on the stock PSU (240v) using 790mv and it got hot but didnt melt but that worried me so I just found and old PC and pulled the PSU and hooked it up to that. Its more effiecient any way and keep it at 800mv now.

It must be the overclocking that crashes the firmware and you MUST hard reset the whole thing. I suppose if you want to get 70ghs out of these puppies then you need to be ready to fix them everyday or create something to cut USB power and +12v with some kind of MCU... I could do it but not worth it really.

No, its not overclocking. My two has zombied from day one, before i even tried anything other than default. And one of them has only given me 40-45 for the most part since i got it.
Due to the shipping cost of them however, it's not worth it to return it from here, i'll just make sure to warn people of the low quality of these.. Too bad, other than that, i kind of like these units.

Yea, mine just ZOMBIED on normal settings. Bugger it. I cant be asked going to pull the cables out and in every single fucking day just for this... but they are pretty sweet. I think i need to come up with something clever and automated... dont have enough time though.. sucks.
I might as well overclock them a bit since I have to to replug the fuckers every 24 hours any way.

Morning routine +replug U3's CHECK...

What type of hub are you on, powered or not powered? USB 3.0 or 2.0? There is also some newer firmware being tested which may fix some of the soft images, but zombie'ing is usually a brief interruption on USB.

USB 2.0 Direct into Motherboard USB Slots, NO Hub, and proper USB shielded USB cable.
U3 12V Powered from 450WATT, separate PSU.

It happens only after some hours and a brief interruption USB should just restart mining, for example. Pull out USB cable, ZOMBIE after 10 seconds, plug in USB cable, ZOMBIE goes away.

In this situation the only way to remove ZOMBIE is to hard power cycle the unit, becuase cgminer does not pickup the USB, or if it does it cannot communicate with it, which means the firmware shat a brick sideways.

If you can turn off USB somehow, then thats the key to hard cycle the U3. I just noticed even with 12volt plugged, the red light inside goes out. Also, I deliberatly sacrificed a USB cable and cut the 5V. I wanted to see if I could just turn the PSU on and OFF which would also power cycle MCU on the U3. But no.. that would be to easy. The MCU is powered by the USB +5 and the ASICS are powered by the 12volt line.

Please note these are Pure deductions by trial and error. I have not fried anything, yet. Phew.

For U3 purchased from other than Bitmaintech.com, please PM us with your original proof of purchase (showing the payment date, shipping tracking from the seller, and a payment method) and description of what is wrong with it.

Original Buyer has 90-days of warranty from the date of purchase.

Resold units don't reset the warranty date based on your purchase date if you purchased it from other than Bitmaintech.com

To be considered for repair/exchange, PLEASE provide BitmainWarranty with your full purchase info and after-sale issue correspondence with the seller who decline to assist with you. (If there was no response from the sellers, please provide us the proof you attempted to initiate the contact but no avail.)

If you were given authorization to return to Denver, Colorado address, please include the PM authorizing you to return with the original purchase record with the miner.

thank you!

Considering that my power brick melted which forced me to modify the unit to accept power from 12V off my PSU, am I still covered for this warranty?

Also having to re-solder a connection?

The power brick works just fine with stock settings. They did not warn about over volting that might caused this. Obviously higher amps. Any way it would not have burned.

The coil would have fused before any fire would start and that would trip your mains safety (taking into account you don't live in a house wired earlier than 1975ish) besides the plastic used is fire ratardand (FCC compliant). Go ahead and try set it on fire Smiley do it outside cause there are more fumes than flames!

Hey maybe that one capicotr was the why I was only getting 45GHS on of the units. Maybe it knocked out one of the ASICS.

Any way. I have been hashing almost 24 hours and no ZOMBIE. What I did was try and run cgminer 4.9.0 without any au3 settings.

It must be the overclocking that crashes the firmware and you MUST hard reset the whole thing. Both my U3 running stable neck in neck at 56.50gh/s WU:788.3

So they DID test it for long times on stock settings. The over clocking is the problem for ZOMBIES so it looks.... I hope after I post this I dont get ZOMBIE. heheh

Nice job on the thermal paste jobbie. Maybe they thought more was better.
19  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER U3 Discussion and Support Thread on: January 06, 2015, 07:57:29 PM
I have 2 of these. I actually had to return one to Amazon seller because I couldnt get more than 45ghs from it. Also dumped the original USB because not 1 of them worked on Linux for some reason. Chopped the PSU barrel pin and connected to dedicated 450W PSU both on separate channels. Running on Ubuntu

I use cgminer 4.9.0 compiled just for iccarus and I cant get these to run longer thatn 24 hours, ever. They go stable, stable, stable, ok I go to bed now. In the morning ZOMBIE.
I got to go unplug the USB, power down, kill cgminmer, plug in power, USB cables and start cgminer. Starts mining again. Then next morning the same problem.

Very rarely one or the other goes zombie. I keep mine cold room ambient 5 degrees with other NAS'es and stuff. So when they running for a few hours the heat sinks are hardly 40 degrees.

Do I need MORE cooling?

I think this is a USB controller / or firmware issue. Because if I power down without removing USB the red light still shines inside and power up and restart cgminer it does NOT find the device. So if the firmware still runs on USB power maybe its firmware crashing, I am not sure. But I was wondering why the bitmain official guide specifically says to plug POWER IN FIRST then USB. It shouldn't matter. (I actually got mine mining 7ghs just off USB power, lol - That was wierd? Plugged in power and jumped to 63ghs)

There must be a firmware issue on these devices I cant believe Bitmain did not pick up on this, they never tested a single unit longer than 24 hours?? Not sure about Windows but maybe its a Linux specific problem?
20  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: 2 x Bitmain Antminer U3 not running the same speeds? on: January 05, 2015, 11:32:42 PM
I find that I have to quite cgminer, turn off the power to the U3, physically unplug the USB's from U3, turn on power, plug in USB and start cgminer, then I got another 16-24 hours of mining before it goes ZOMBIE
