How do you know if you hold ETH classic or the new ETH?
I bought a handful of ETH in September 2016. I think it was literally days before the hard fork. I didn't even f#%king know what a hard-fork was!
Anyhow, I read somewhere that ETH Classic are almost worthless. Given I bought before the hard fork (if only days), does that mean I'm stuck with worthless ETH classic?
Thanks for any thoughts.

Thank you. It's amazing how few users are willing to help newbies in cryptocurrencies. But your message helped. It looks like I may have indeed backed up my ETH wallet information. I do have the UTC file...
Now if only I knew what I need to do with it. I simply cannot run the Etherium client on computer. It takes days and days and never downloads enough of the blockchain to become usable to me. That's how I got into trouble in the first place.
So now that I might indeed have the UTC file with the keystore, is there anything I can do with it to get my Ethereum back other than trying to download the entire Etherium client again?
Thanks!

Perhaps someone can tell me the specific file to search for on my computer? Just a file name would be great!
I just need to see if there's a chance the original key is still on my computer. I know it's in the "app data" but surely there is a file name, and within that file is an alpha-numeric sequence that is the ETH key.
Thanks!

I was using the ETC client and couldn't get it to work (it would never download sufficient blockchain--even over several days--to become functional). I finally gave up. Since then I have changed my computer quite a bit and deleted all kinds of stuff. I may have deleted the ETH keystore.
How can I simply search my entire hard-drive for any possible traces of the keystore file? What might that file or a backup of that file be called?
I still have the passsword.

About a year ago I jumped into the crypto world with ETH, figuring that I'd missed the boat on bitcoin itself. I quickly abandoned ETH because I could not get the client to work. Even after several days of downloading, it would never manage to accumulate enough blockchain for me to use the client. I had invested $150 in ETH and was just trying to play with it (I could see the ETH was purchased when I viewed the ETH blockchain through a search engine).
Before finishing any download, I was also prompted constantly to download the new updated ETH client. So before I could even use the old one, I was supposed to download the new one.
Finally, I read that to make it work I should probably delete the appdata and start again. I recorded my password and did so. Ultimately, I gave up on ETH as a complete joke and moved over to BTC, which has been a really cool experience. I'm learning more about it, how to use BTC securely and to protect my BTC properly. But now I'm realizing of course that my $150 in ETH is gone forever. Deleting the appdata probably deleted my original ETH keystore. It's the most un-user-firendly software I have ever encountered in my life.
On a Github forum thread, reading about some poor guy who has lost his ETH because he did what I did (saved password but didn't know anything about saving the keystore, which is saved in some inscrutable obscure location on your hard-drive with a meaningless name), one of the developers said "Maybe we should make the account back up more prominent in the software."
Uh you think?!!!!
I would just like to know if there is a log of keystores on my computer somewhere! Who knows. Maybe it's in some file and I can even get my bloody $150 back!
Never again ETH.

Welcome any thoughts on which wallet is better? More secure?

Thanks for the response. In fact, there IS a "save" button for Receive Requests. It's the frickin' NEW button! I don't know why it's called "NEW". I assumed it meant "start a new Receive request" but New actually refers to saving the current request. So problem solved, but that button is badly named. Not intuitive at all. ;-)

Thank you to the above two replies to my query.
Yes, some more research confirmed for me that any non-alpha-numeric symbol is NOT a valid part of the Electrum wallet address.
Just so you know, I was getting this ? at the end of my wallet address when I selected "COPY" from the RECEIVE tab of electrum (after filling out all my details). Then when I paste those details into an email it was adding a question mark ("?") to the end of the wallet address, rather than adding a "space". So the pasted text ends up looking like this
bitcoin:3dkljfJFKDJ3...dlkjf8W7?amount=0.0015
instead of like this
bitcoin:3dkljfJFKDJ3...dlkjf8W7 amount=0.0015
So for a newbie, you don't know if the "?" is a real part of the wallet address or not.
cheers

Fairly new to Electrum, but after a few transactions I've concluded there's a simple flaw in the interface. That is, when you create a RECEIVE notification, there is no "SAVE" or "CONFIRM" button. Sometimes completely filling out the RECEIVE details transposes the details over to the REQUESTS list. And sometimes it doesn't. I never know when I've managed to confirm a RECEIVE request in my Electrum or not. Once you finish filling out the details, there should be a check box or confirm button that makes it clear I've done what I need to do so that the RECEIVE notification is now saved to my list of REQUESTS.

Just trying the Android version of Electrum for first time. It seems if you want to transfer BTC to an Android Electrum wallet, you can "COPY" the wallet's deposit-address and paste it into an email or text message--which is necessary because the wallet's deposit-address is too long to appear on the Android Electrum screen (you get an abbreviated version of the address displayed with an ellipsis (eg. Dkfjlkd8...aasdklf).
But when I choose copy and paste from the Android Electrum wallet and paste it into a message, sometimes it adds a question mark ("?") to the end of the alpha-numeric sequence of the deposit address. Why is it adding a question mark? If I send it to the address with or without the question mark will it still arrive in the same Electrum BTC wallet?
Thank you for any advice!
