1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Long term profitability and future of mining on: March 23, 2017, 01:16:02 AM
Hi again everyone. I wasn't planning on doing another one of these but after doing a bit more research I'm getting a bit worried about the long term profitability of a mining rig.

It's already proven true that mining Ethereum is profitable right now but what are you guys going to mine after it switches to proof of stake?

I'm not sure if my sources are false but I've read that 1 sol == hash in Zcash and an rx 470 should produce about 30 sols per second. This means il be losing over 400 dollars a year. Even in monero at 550 hashes per second each il only be profiting 400 dollars a year apposed to Ethereums 1000 dollars a year. That profit for monero will probably even go down because many Ethereum miners will go there.
Am I boned if Ethereum incorporates proof of stake unless I have like 12 graphics cards? Please tell me my math is wrong or I'm looking at the wrong altcoins because otherwise I'm not sure if buying 3 graphic cards now is worth it.

470/480 get about 300+ sol/s not 30

Are you sure? That would make it more profitable than mining Ethereum. Every Zcash forum i have read about the rx470/480 suggests that they average 30sols/s

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / 3rd questions from a mining noob on: March 18, 2017, 01:04:47 PM
Hey again everyone, I'm back again for the third and probably last time before I go out and actually buy the GPU's to set up my rig.

1. How useful is EthOs? Other than convenience are there any other reasons to buy it rather than just using windows?

2. What is the average lifespan of a RX 470 or 480 in a relatively humid country?

3. How important is the efficiency of a power supply. Is having a platinum rated power supply vital or am I ok getting a gold 1000W supply. How much did you guys pay for you power supply?

4. This is a bit of a long one so I'm going to give a bit of a back story first. I have had a desktop for 3 years now. It has an intel I5 4440 and a motherboard with PCIe and USB3. I'm going to be getting a laptop in about a month and what to use some of my desktop parts to build the rig but I don't want to completely tear apart my PC. Can I remove all the cables and all video cards. Leave the motherboard and CPU inside the casing, open up the left side of the casing and have the mining GPU's (which will be attached to a self made open air mining case) connected into the motherboard in the open PC case instead of the motherboard resting on the ground or are there any distinct disadvantages to doing so?
I know this one isn't very well worded so if you need clarification just say so.

I know this ones a bit long so just answer whatever you want. Even an answer to one question is much appreciated Smiley

Thanks for the help guys. I have a relatively small budget of 800$ which I'm planning to increase based on how it runs. I'm also getting a laptop soon so I'm going to be using the CPU and motherboard from my PC so I probably only need to get the GPU's, a better supply unit and maybe other things I need to replace or upgrade. I pay around 12.5 cents KWh. I probably won't be buying the GPU's for the next month anyway so hopefully there is a bit more info about Vega by then. I'm not eligible for the free shipping because I live all the way in Malaysia meaning with bank transfer and shipping it adds to 340$ but it's ok because I can get the card around here for the US equivalent of 260 anyway.
I'd love to have a talk because I still have a few questions but it's 10PM around here and I gotta wake up at 6 tomorrow for school so I'm gonna head out for the night. Will check this thread again tomorrow.
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / A few more questions from a mining noob. on: March 15, 2017, 12:17:14 PM
Hey again everyone I have a few more more questions regarding mining altcoins.

1.  It has come to my understanding that proof of stake may be implemented into Ethereum in the next few months. I know there are other altcoins but are any of them worthwhile to GPU with at least 80-85% of Ethereum profit?

2. I thought the Radeon RX 470 was currently one of the best Ethereum miners on the market for the past year, but it looks like the 480 is more profitable. I know that GPU's are getting better every year but I heard people talking about interesting new GPU's coming out in the next few months. Is it worthwhile to wait until something better comes around or will the RX470 be the best bang for my buck for the next 5-6 months.

3. Why do different people use different GPU's for mining? I know it's about preference but isn't there always a clearly top card that has the best price for the speed?

4. What's the difference between 4gb versions of cards and 8 gb versions? I get that the bigger the better but they often have a 40-50$ difference between them. Do they majorly impact the mining speed?

Ps. I know that google is my friend but with so many opposing articles and arguments online I would rather hear this directly from the people on this forum.
All answers and advice are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for going through it. So I buy 3 Radeon RX 470s i should be making 91.90$ a month not including pool fees? But then why have I heard so many people saying mining is no longer profitable when with less than 1000$ of equipment you can make over 90$ a month?
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Just a few questions from a mining noob! on: March 13, 2017, 12:56:05 PM
Hi everyone! I'm thinking about getting into GPU mining. In particular ethereum mining and I just have a few questions.
1. It says that the Radeon RX 470 has a power consumption of 150. Does this mean that if I have a cost of 13 cents kWH I should be paying 0.468$ per day to have 1 running?
2. Does this stack? It says a Radeon RX 470 has a hash rate of around 24 MH/s. Does this mean if I get 3 I should be getting 72 MH/s and paying 1.404 dollars a day for electricity?
3. If so why are people complaining that mining is not profitable anymore? I put it into a mining profitability calculator and it says it will be making me 91.90 cents profit per month! This means it will pay for the hardware in less that 8 months. It isn't really anything to live off but 92 dollars is still a lot of money. Even if ethereum drops back to 18 dollars I will still be in the green.
4. Did I go wrong somewhere in my math or is it really that worthwhile? I understand that in 6 months this GPU will not be as profitable as there will be faster ones on the market but is it at least somewhat realistic to make a profit with 2-3 of these for the next half year?

Thanks for anyone that takes the time to read and anserrs these questions. It really means a lot to me!
