I do not recommend using bootstrap.dat for newer clients(read here), download the latest if you are using newer clients to prevent any syncing issues, it includes all files in the bitcoin data directory

3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / How to safely use the bitcoin core client, get rid of third party wallets. on: October 21, 2015, 11:53:20 PM
Third party wallets on the desktop are primarily safer than the core wallet if 2FA is enabled via sms. User does not have to risk losing bitcoins if his/her OS is compromised.

So the problem that needs solving is installing bitcoin core on a non compromised system. One way to do this:

Change your OS to Qubes OS, install bitcoin core on one of the Virtual machines without installing anything else on the vm. QUBES OS works in a way that if any of your other VM's are compromised, they can't infect each other, your base vm where all vm's are initialized from has no network access so it can never be compromised.

For mobiles:
The blackphone 2 does have the os setup similar to QUBES so i'm thinking you could create a separate virtual phone that one day houses only the bitcoin core client. Use an SPV client on it for now.

4  Bitcoin / Project Development / 21 Bitcoin Computer Project Idea Thread. on: October 02, 2015, 10:22:03 PM
Post your ideas and projects here.

Some of my ideas.

Joystream like service
Problem: Poor ratio of seeders to leechers.
Solution: Users use the 21 computer to download torrent files at blistering speeds because they pay seeders micro amounts for their bandwidth. Users do not actually spend any money because the bitcoins they are spending are mined on the backend without them even having to do a thing in terms of purchasing bitcoins and making payments.

Bitube
Problem: Youtubes incentive model is broken.
Solution: Youtube with a new incentive model, instead of advertisments, uploaders get paid satoshis for every second a user watches any of their videos. Lets say 1 satoshi per second. Again the ease of use of this service is present because the user never has to deal with purchasing and wasting money on bitcoins when its already integrated in there computer, enough for watching bitube videos.

Competitive and incentivized  Video Games
Problem: Video games have no reward structure which stretch out to the real world.
Solution: Use 21 computer micro payments to reward and allow people to compete with each other. Think agar.io or chopcoin.io with leaderboard awards without having to gamble anything other than a few mined satoshis which are not payed for.

5  Bitcoin / Project Development / BITCOIN > SPENDABLE NETELLER (Net++ card) PROJECT IDEA on: October 01, 2015, 09:48:39 PM
A site in which you insert bitcoin and the website then sends you neteller dollers which are spendable using the virtual cards. You can't do this directly from the site and a simple service like this could be very popular. At the moment people send neteller USD to something like pokerstars and then gamble a little and withdraw to neteller account in order to make credit card purchases, its inefficient and can be improved with a dedicated service.

6  Economy / Service Discussion / Warning Do Not Use GreenAddress.it on: July 03, 2015, 01:43:56 PM
Currently have a substantial amount of funds stuck on greenaddress due to a major bug in the greenaddress web service.

When logging in i get prompted with this message, clicking either option recursively gives me the same message or freezes the web page. I have tried disabling cookes, changing browsers, changing computers to no avail. Also installed the app on my ipod touch and got the same problems

WARNING!!! DO NOT TRUST THIS WEB SERVICE WITH YOUR COINS.

I have contacted support but still no answer after 24 hours, will be sending multiple messages to support until i get a response. Will be boycotting in the meantime as i don't want anyone to be in this position, Learn from me and stay away from greenaddress until at least they have fixed this bug.

UPDATE:
I can now login again however they have not fixed the bug so it still could affect you:

Quote
The issue should be fixed now. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The cause of the issue is a bug that has affected only a couple of people so far and unfortunately you were one of them.

We'll be looking to fix the bug as soon as possible, please let us know if it happens again (it's quite random so is very hard to reproduce but it may happen).

8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Bitcoin & Fungibility, The relevance Of anon tech on: April 01, 2015, 05:25:34 PM
Bitcoin will not be dominant as it could be because its not fungible.

Zerocash is the most important development that is going on in the bitcoin space.

I see the possibility in the meanwhile for anonymous coins such as monero, darkcoin and others creep up in value due to bitcoins lack of fungibility.

And no, stealth addresses and  coin mixing does not remove the coins transaction history.

Zerocash release date in around 6 months to 2 years in my opinion.

10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Cost of production linked to the price? on: October 24, 2014, 06:54:40 PM
So some people claim that coins are worthless if the cost of production is near zero. Other people claim that it doesn't matter what the cost to producing a coin is as there are other factors that determine the price.

What are your opinions?

MaidSafe

End To End Encrypted True Peer To Peer Internet, 7 years in development

http://maidsafe.net/

Features:

The MaidSafe vision is to replace today's existing server centric and intrusive systems with a fully distributed, safe, secure and private network. A network with no third party being able to intercept, copy, steal, sell or otherwise access the network’s data.

The MaidSafe platform provides a distributed network that allows developers to create fast and secure applications of any kind. With no API key to be purchased and no infrastructure required, developers are not exposed to any financial risk with significantly reduced customer acquisition costs.

No Servers

No servers = no data centres
100% server security (there are no servers)
Impervious to web censoring (no DNS)
Denial of Service attacks rendered invalid via opportunistic caching - See diagram
Unlimited data storage with no monetary cost and no transactions
No Administrators - Only Users

Network automatically configures and reconfigures in near real time
Privacy and data protection via thousands of algorithms on hundreds of nodes working in tandem
Network decides in real time where data is stored
Data caches close to users in real time
Remove need for network provisioning and planning (hint, computers are better at this than us)
No data centres, so no data centre staff
Data Management Security

Invisible to users, all data is encrypted in real time
Real time data de-duplication, reduces amount of data stored
Real time replication, recovery and corruption repair
Geographic distribution of 'replicant' data (allowing mass network outage at zero loss)

Nobody has access to anyone else's data unless specifically shared
Password and Key Security

100% protection against passwords being stolen in transit (they are never transmitted)
Three (minimum) distinct system areas with separate keys and IDs (no network link between them)
Login to system with username, pin and password
Store, retrieve and manipulate your data with another ID (cryptographic key set)
Communicate with others through another ID
For every private share, another key chain is created and shared
Share any Kind of Data

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A story that might not be a story, and a recent reminder from Satoshi. on: February 23, 2014, 10:52:34 AM
There is a young woman in Venezuela. She has degrees in PolySci and Economics. She has a young daughter. Her husband, a civics engineer, is in the hospital on life support. She begged him not to go to the rallies, but couldn't stop him. Every day there is fire and blood and death and a river of angry flesh in the streets. A police truncheon caved in his skull. The doc will pull the plug soon, if he doesn't flee Venezuela first.

She has the background in economics and politics to understand that Maduro meant well but is hopelessly naive in both of those fields, and that the current unrest and subsequent violence was designed and funded from outside; shades of the cold war. None of that matters now.

She has some savings, and had the foresight from her education to convert that to cash over the last few months and has avoided the bank runs and the other internal currency controls. But inflation is at 300% and threatens to go Zimbabwe amid the continued G20 currency wars, escalating violence and lawlessness. She has to get her daughter out.

Chile or Uruguay would be the best bet, she concludes. She considered buying gold to mitigate the inflation which might hit 10,000% before she leaves, and to make the money more portable, but she has heard about how the border guards like to linger on the pat downs for pretty young women, and how it can go from degrading to dangerous if they catch you in the crime of taking your money with you. There is a certain type of pathology that is attracted to a TSA or border guard job these days... but she has to take the money with her somehow. The alternative is showing up penniless in a foreign country. That means turning tricks for food.

Due to her interest in economics, she is somewhat familiar with Bitcoin and the various entry/exit techniques. She makes a few trepidatious inquiries on localbitcoins.com from her laptop, picks the dealer with the longest history and best rating, and meets in a coffee shop close to her apartment:

"I want to buy $10,000 equivalent in American dollars of bitcoin from you, is that ok?"

"Lady, everybody wants that these days. I'm nearly tapped out. And the internet filters are troublesome too, but they only make things crazy and slow things down. The full blackouts though, the kill switches, they stop everything. The local miners say they have to stop mining then or a Venezuelan Bitcoin blockchain will fork and all those transactions will die the minute the internet connection is turned back on because the rest of the world's hashing power is 1,000 times ours. Lots of chaos right now."

"Well how much can you do right now?"

"Maybe $1,000 American."

"Is that all? Surely you can do more please?"

"No, I'm tapped out. A lot of people are doing what you're doing."

"Ok but if I buy $1,000 now can I buy more from you in a few days? Please if you could help, it's very important. I have a daughter..."

"Maybe, I don't know for sure. Keep emailing me."

Over the next few weeks she manages to convert her Venezuelan money to bitcoin, losing 15% of value from devaluation and 25% from local inflation of bitcoin. She decided on Chile, and fled. She drove, thinking that was safer than flying. Agents immediately whisked her away at the border.

Her family says the government knew about her plans because they heard government agents and military people had taken over the ISPs. The family has tracked down the daughter. She is in the custody of the Ministry for Children and Families but they won't release her to the husband's family members. They haven't been able to get any word from the government on the mother. They suspect she is dead.

Tor might have helped her. Zerocoin might have helped her. Darkwallet might have helped her. I'm struggling to understand how the Bitcoin Foundation's activities to date might have helped her, but I do hear they give good Congressional testimony.

"I did this thing for ordinary people. I did not do it for businesses or banks, and I did not do it for governments ... I did it in spite of them." - Satoshi Nakamoto, 2014

20  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin vs FIAT distribution of wealth on: February 11, 2014, 09:00:24 PM

People   Bitcoins
430000   0.005
690000   0.05
550000   0.5
250000   5
68000   50
10000   500
820           5000
46           12500

Both show extremely disproportionate distribution of wealth between rich and poor.
