221  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Operation Fabulous question.... on: May 25, 2011, 04:04:04 PM
Does anyone know if there's a way to see current bids on existing sites?  It seems that Operation Fabulous lists out all of the websites and their minimum bids, but do the bids stay hidden, or can I look at them somewhere?  Is there a good reason for this?
222  Economy / Marketplace / Thinking about creating an escrow service... on: May 23, 2011, 04:05:51 PM
This would be put on my list of "websites to create", probably won't get to it for a few weeks as I already have two other sites in progress.

Anyway, I'm thinking about setting up an escrow service website.  Biggest problem I have right now is the resolution of conflict.  If I take the paypal route, anyone with a tracking # showing proof of shipment would be awarded the bitcoins.  However, I know sellers are known to rip people off by sending bricks, notebooks, etc to buyers in place of the actual items.

Is there any way that anyone can see to prevent this?  Obviously, taking pictures doesn't help, as the buyer could have just as easily filled the box with his own bricks.  I thought about unboxing videos, but the buyer could have also used his own bricks, then resealed the box.  Aside from videoing nonstop from the point of the mailman delivering the package, I can't think of any way for the buyer or seller to really verify with 100% proof that they did indeed uphold their end of the deal.

Another option is to "hook in" to my feedback website, to where any complaints against a buyer or seller result in a negative feedback against that person.  However, I know that many people may want to use an escrow service anonymously, so I'd want to be sure to be able to service their requests as well.

I could always go the clearcoin route of having coins donated to a charity if the seller doesn't produce the goods.  But that still poses a significant risk to the seller.  I would like to alleviate the risk to both parties.

Also, this is not "just another escrow service".  I have a twist on it that will definitely help buyers and sellers.  I'm excited to reveal the completed site down the road.  Smiley

What would the community like to see out of an escrow service?
223  Bitcoin / Mining / POLL: Are you still buying mining equipment? on: May 23, 2011, 03:46:15 PM
Just curious.  So answer the poll already!
224  Bitcoin / Mining / Getting 3.3BTC/day, should be getting 4.53 on: May 22, 2011, 07:03:38 AM
According to this bitcoin calculator (http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php), I should be getting 4.53BTC/day.  I have 1100MH/s split up in the following manner:

5850 - 265MH/s
5850 - 265MH/s
5770 - 172MH/s
4650 - 22MH/s
5870 - 370MH/s

I'm mining with deepbit.net, and recently changed from PPS to Proportional.  I haven't had a machine go down at all over the last 48 hours, and have been watching the "BTC in last 24 hrs" counter on the deepbit website.  It's been down as low as 2.96, as high as 3.68, and mostly in the 3.10-3.20 range.  Right now, it's 3.30.

Why the large discrepancy between what I am getting and what the calculator says?  Just bad luck?  I would expect luck to even out quickly in such a large pool.  It just doesn't seem right...

Has anyone else done this sort of analysis on their own mining?
225  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / At least 1 unique address per block? on: May 22, 2011, 06:06:58 AM
Quick question.  Is there at least one unique address in each block?  Or are the reward addresses reused?
226  Bitcoin / Mining / Any other pay-per-share pools? on: May 19, 2011, 09:28:35 PM
I know deepbit does PPS.  Are there any other pools that do?
227  Economy / Marketplace / [COMPLETED] Free 0.10 BTC! on: May 19, 2011, 12:06:12 AM
New registrations on bitcoinfeedback.com have slowed to an unacceptable level, so it's time for a new promotion!  I can't afford to do another 0.25 BTC promo, so it'll just have to be 0.10 BTC this time, sorry!

The NEXT 10 people to receive feedback, as of the time of this posting, will receive 0.10 BTC each, sent to the bitcoin address they have attached to their account!

228  Bitcoin / Project Development / [BOUNTY] Open Source pooled mining platform with web interface on: May 18, 2011, 05:23:32 AM
Due to the recent discussion of the possible security issues with deepbit.net and other large pool miners controlling too much of the overall hashing power (http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=8653.0), I would like to open up a bounty thread for an open source pooled mining platform with an already-coded web interface.

The installation and configuration of this pool software should be extremely simple, to where anyone who is able to set up their own miner, buy webhosting with MySQL and a VPS/dedicated server for bitcoind, and has some basic knowledge of how to use said hosting package, should be able to set it up.

User-side setup actions should be limited to:
- Setting a configuration file for the server that miners connect to to get work
- Entering a username/password for future administrative access to the backend configuration of the web side of things
- Inputting database settings within an administrative backend of the web interface for MySQL data storage

MySQL tables should be automatically created without user intervention.  As long as the files are properly uploaded to the website, the pool server is running on said webhost's VPS or another server with proper port-forwarding, and the MySQL database information has been given, the pool should be up and running, and anyone can connect.  DNS address creation can, of course, be optionally executed by the user of the pool.

Does anyone want to start off the bounty for this project with a promised number of BTC if said project is seen to completion?
229  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why does the Mt Gox depth chart end? on: May 17, 2011, 11:32:21 PM
I'm just curious if anyone knows the answer to this... currently, the market depth chart, as shown as part of the Mega Chart, ends at about $5.25 on the bottom end and about $12.00 at the top end.  Why does it not go further?  I am certain there are sell orders out there at outlandish amounts (like $200 or something), so why are these not shown on the depth chart?  Is there a way to see these outlier orders?
230  Economy / Economics / What happens if the US bans the use of bitcoins? on: May 16, 2011, 06:30:10 PM
I think it's inevitable.  Even if it largely unenforceable, I believe the US will ban the use of bitcoins as a currency.

The effects of this:
- Current bitcoin-to-cash and cash-to-bitcoin services will be shut down.  No one could continue to operate a decently large service like that and not be caught.
- A black market might form for bitcoin-to-cash and cash-to-bitcoin services, which specializes in avoiding the government's watchful eye.  I am not sure how they would be able to do it, but I would bet it would involve piles of laundered drug money that is currently invisible to the government.
- Bitcoin value would drop like a rock overnight.  Without anyone being able to exchange bitcoins for USD, many investors/speculators would lose confidence and try to sell sell sell as quickly as possible to avoid being stuck with bitcoins they cannot use (read: cannot continue investing with).  Investors/speculators don't want to buy stuff with bitcoins, they are only in it for what they can get out of it in USD.
- Many people would still see the value of bitcoins as a currency, and would not join in the panic sell - they would hold on to their bitcoins and wait to see what happens.
- Pricing of goods and services in bitcoins would suddenly become extremely arbitrary, with no USD exchange rate to compare prices to.
- Eventually, bitcoins would see stability again, albeit at a much lower market value.  Trades of bitcoins for goods and services would start happening again at a regular rate.  Pricing for goods would still be semi-arbitrary for quite a while, with fluctuations depending on the seller's belief/trust in bitcoins.  Lower trust in bitcoins = higher price for goods.  Buyers would be mostly willing to accept whatever the current lowest price is for the good or service they are looking for.
- The cost to mine bitcoins within a certain period of time may come in to play with regards to the ending "stable" market value of bitcoins, and thus, the saleprice of many goods and services.

Discuss.
231  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / API documentation? on: May 14, 2011, 12:52:13 AM
Looking to build a website that integrates actual bitcoin transactions.  What sort of documentation is there for the API for making transactions through php?

Also, say I wanted to dump all previously created bitcoin transactions into a MySQL database.  What would be the best way to do this and keep said database regularly updated with the latest transactions?

I could datamine from blockexplorer.com with some sort of a crawler, but I figure there's probably a better way to go about it.  Smiley
232  Economy / Marketplace / 0.25 Free BTC [COMPLETED] on: May 13, 2011, 06:00:51 PM
I need to put some incentives out there to help jumpstart my site, so...

The next 10 people who register at bitcoinfeedback.com AND receive a legitimate feedback rating from someone else AND have a public or private bitcoin address registered to their account will receive 0.25 BTC!

It is ok if the transaction is already completed - just contact the other party and have them leave feedback for you.

Gogogogogo!

http://www.bitcoinfeedback.com

EDIT:  To decide who the first 10 people are, I will go by the timestamp of the feedback received.  As long as the person who has received feedback also has a bitcoin address associated to their account, I will be sending them 0.25 to that bitcoin address!
233  Other / Off-topic / MySQL Help Requested... on: May 12, 2011, 08:14:50 PM
I can't really figure out the best way to do this...

On my website, bitcoinfeedback, I have a few MySQL tables.  One of them is feedback, and one of them is users.

I'd like to easily be able to pull the percentage of positive vs negative vs neutral feedback a user has while generating a list of users, all with one query.

The only way I can think of to do this is to have three more fields in the users table that just keep an updated count of feedback any time someone leaves feedback on a person's profile.  It would run a query to count the three different types of feedback on a given users account, then update those three fields with the count numbers.  When pulling the users into a list, I could easily make whatever calculations I wanted to do with those three count numbers.

Is there a better way to do this?  Currently, feedback "type" is stored within a single varchar field within each feedback.  So the varchar field will either say "positive", "negative", or "neutral".  I can change that to numbers (1, 0, and -1), and say, only do a sum of it divided by the count, but I'd lose visibility of how many of each the person had.

Thoughts?  Other ways of accomplishing the same thing?
234  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / A secure wallet storage system? on: May 12, 2011, 03:10:14 AM
I know that many of you wouldn't trust a company to store your wallet information in any shape or form.  But, I would like to ask that those of you who WOULD be interested, tell me what features/requirements you would like to see in such a service.

For example:
- REQUIRE files to be pre-encrypted on the client end by some 4096-bit standard encryption process.  Would need to be easy and accessible to even the most noobish of computer users
- After verification that the wallet file is encrypted, accept it as an upload
- Further encrypt the file on the server end.
- Hash filenames, and insert 50,000+ fake wallets with hashed file names as well. (would this help though?)
- REQUIRE strong passwords to access accounts/wallets
- If requested prior to wallet upload, can add in optional proof of ownership, to where a person would have to talk to the company directly to retrieve their wallet.
- Storage facility with server(s) would be under lock and key at all times.
- Daily physical offsite backup of all data, also under lock and key.
- Complete drive and server redundancies (RAID5 on two separate servers storing the same information)

I wouldn't trust any online host to do this, so I would do it all myself.  That's why I am talking about specifics with hardware setups, etc.

Thoughts?  Bad idea/good idea?  Any security features to add/remove?
235  Other / Obsolete (selling) / [SOLD]: Sapphire 5850 Xtreme on: May 10, 2011, 04:39:34 AM
This is the card:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102932&cm_re=5850_sapphire-_-14-102-932-_-Product

It's brand new in box, haven't even opened the package from Newegg (though I probably will to remove the packslip before shipping it back out).  I originally bought three of the cards, intent on using them for mining.  Then a good deal popped up on Craigslist, and I was able to pick up a 5870 for the same price.  I don't have any other computers to run this extra card in, so I was planning to return it to newegg.

HOWEVER, with 5850's being completely out of stock on newegg now, I figured I'd offer it up for sale here and see if anyone was looking for one.

Asking 32.5BTC shipped.

Check my feedback at http://www.bitcoinfeedback.com/viewuser.php?id=2.  Except, right now, all I have is a fake feedback.  Tongue  PM me if you are ready to buy, and I'll send a bitcoin address your way.
236  Economy / Marketplace / Introducing BitCoinFeedback.com! on: May 09, 2011, 08:23:04 AM

The site isn't entirely ready yet, but it *should* be ready enough to fully use.  I just don't yet have all of the features implemented that I'd like to see.  Give it a try, and let me know if you see any potential security problems or bugs.

The site serves two main purposes:
1. Provide a central and easy-to-use location for rating various businesses and individuals who sell or trade with bitcoins.
2. Allow users to validate that a particular bitcoin address is indeed attached to the seller they believe it should be attached to.

I decided to create the site after seeing the stickied list of "honest traders" on this forum (http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=484.0).  It just seemed that there wasn't any way to leave feedback for someone you are trading with aside from the list on the forum and the web of trust/IRC trading.  I know that IRC trading isn't exactly user-friendly for people who haven't used IRC before.  I also know that the list on the forums can be a bit cumbersome to use and search through, and disorganized.  This website is meant to fill the hole between those two options.

Potential dangers:
- Users registering under another members name with malicious intent to deceive.  Best prevention is to ensure that you register your forum name and any business names you have at the website quickly, even if you do not plan to use the website.
- Others...?  You tell me if you can think of anything.

Future expansion
I intend to expand on this website, perhaps through use of another domain name, to allow sellers to create "listings" of items or services for sale.  I am picturing a craigslist-style catalog, but with feedback and usernames integrated.

Let me know what you think!  http://www.bitcoinfeedback.com - I am open to all constructive criticism!
237  Economy / Trading Discussion / Spreadsheet: Invest in BTC or mining hardware? on: May 08, 2011, 02:01:21 AM
I have generated a spreadsheet that should allow user input of all potential variables to consider when deciding whether to invest in mining hardware or in BTC directly.

Play with it, and tell me what you think.  It seems that the wisest choice could be either, and it greatly depends on difficulty levels and expected increase (or decrease) in the price of BTC.

v1.1 - Difficulty should now accurately affect BTC production.
v1.2 - Added in calculations to show profits if production is traded daily.
v1.3 - Added invest/withdrawal/pool fees fields, added uptime percentage field.
v1.31 - Calculation/bug fixes
v1.32 - Calculation/bug fixes

Download the spreadsheet (v 1.32)
If you find any errors in the calculations, PLEASE let me know so I can fix it!

238  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / POLL: How many bitcoins do you CURRENTLY have? on: May 05, 2011, 06:27:17 PM
Well, how many DO you have?
239  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Any talk of a currency symbol? on: May 05, 2011, 06:21:23 PM
I'm thinking a B with a line through the middle vertically.

Either that, or a backwards F with the middle line crossing both sides of the staff.
240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Does anyone mine on Server 2008? on: May 05, 2011, 07:21:23 AM
I have a box running Server 2008.  It's an i7 with three PCIe x16 slots, and I'd like to take advantage of at least one of those!  Problem is, I installed the 5850, only barely got it running by pointing the Windows installer to the driver, and the Stream SDK doesn't recognize an Open CL compatible video card in the system!  Argh!

Any tips?  I notice that AMD doesn't have official support for Server 2008, but if any of you have gotten it working, well, it'd be awesome to know how.  Don't suggest switching from Server 2008 either, because I can't.  I use the box for a gameserver as well, and I can't take it down for a long enough period to reinstall the OS and the server files, etc.  I'll just build a new computer if it comes down to that.
