1  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Patriotic miner purchase on: August 13, 2018, 07:07:31 PM
When will an Intel ASIC chip board (functional miner) be available for purchase?  Best guess?  What should I look for in the general news?

This might be my last miner purchase even if there's a cheaper competitor available from Asia.  One can't really ignore the Zeitgeist.

2  Other / Meta / Re: What are Signature Campaigns? is this thread closed? I have questions on: August 12, 2018, 07:23:31 PM
I tried asking questions on the topic thread but it seems closed, e.g. no Reply button.

1. If another user has some signatures is there a way to see how much the user has earned from the sigs?

2. Are higher ranked users, Legendary, Full Member, Member, paid different rates for carrying the sigs?

3. If a user ignored the May 24, 2015 direction to change his password, had a higher than Jr. Member status, and had his username hijacked, and the hijacked username now has a string of sigs, and the ethernet address posted shows large amounts of eth moving through, is there anything the real owner of the username need to worry about?  If he's in another time zone on another continent will that disrupt my sleep or would that be something to do with the large amounts of eth moving through?

3  Economy / Economics / Buffett Market Indicator and my cat's mackerel on: August 10, 2018, 11:16:54 PM
I see the Buffett Market Indicator has broken 140%.  Total market cap to gross domestic product.

So, there's more money in making money with money than there is Gross Domestic Product at present.

I now have cats, I use to have a couple of dogs.  I have chickens.  A rat problem developed, them feeding on the chicken scratch.  Used common store bought rat poison but heard it kills the owls and there are owls, or were.  Whole neighborhood got rats.  I started feeding a small stray cat then another.  Then ferrule cats brought their litters as my 3 acres are fenced.  Had 24 kittens earlier this year and brought most to the county animal shelter.  I was wishing kittens were bitcoins.  Just now I have another round of kittens.  I like to feed the mom's mackerel.  I fed a skinny kitten mackerel last year and it's sharper than the others.  So, I buy a lot of mackerel but the large least expensive national chain has failed to keep it on the shelves and sometimes goes weeks without refilling.  So I ordered online and had them deliver.  Cheaper and delivery was free if one orders enough.  I look at the box.  Product of China.  And I had first rejected this brand as the mackerel was in brine and it was mostly brine I thought.  So, to check, I bought the next best competitor, drained the brine from both, weighed the product, and found the brand from China a better buy.  But you see what's happening.  They move cans and labels.  They make work.  The employees at the canning facilities have a better income to rent an apartment, buy a washing machine, refrigerator, move up.  We have a Buffett Market Indicator of 140%.  I blame it on futures.
4  Economy / Economics / Musk is doing the right thing. on: August 09, 2018, 04:48:14 PM
I agree entirely with Elon Musk taking Tesla private for the reason futures trading gets blocked.  I wish there was some way to ban bitcoin futures trading.

According the the wikipedia it seems clear that the tulip bubble was killed by the Dutch start of tulip futures trading.  Heck the tulip bubble might have been created for that purpose, busting it.

The wikipedia says that the Japanese then took the futures idea and used it to provide a guaranteed rice income to the Samurai.  The Samurai had an annual rice payment that sometime suffered from poor harvests and the elite Samurai were then protected.

Futures trading seem to steadily pump wealth out of whatever it subjects.  If bitcoin futures trading guarantees a btc income then the pumping out of wealth since bitcoin futures start is explained while the rest of us see a guaranteed downward slope.  And the fantastic blurbs about how it can reach astounding heights are bogus to keep us from bailing and keep holdrs put.

What would the stock market be like without futures trading?  No betting against?  They'd have to struggle to find which will be the best above others.  Betting against what they can manipulate would not be an option.  When the whole stock market drops they'd see no profit in it.

I see the downward slope of bitcoin value is again steadily down as it mostly has been since 12/17/2017.  But there are up jumps!  Still, the wealth is getting pumped out or put back in at a lower rate for many more btc.  The transfer of wealth to the futures traders.

5  Other / Meta / Login had been blocked so.. on: August 09, 2018, 04:24:26 PM
I'd been posting as soy for a long time until late last summer or so.  I became blocked from logging into bitcointalk.org on all my machines.  Desperate I created soy39, the handle I'm using now.  Every once in a while I try soy again and it's blocked.  How can I go back to soy from soy39?  What was the problem that had that locked out?  I'm pretty sure I didn't break any rules.

6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Is there cryptocoins chart that shows which are subject to futures contracts? on: July 14, 2018, 06:08:00 PM

Is there a chart that lists all cryptocoins and clearly shows which are subject to futures contracts and which are not?

I'd like a crypto coin that is not subject to futures contracts, can be mined, and like bitcoin will have an absolute limit on how many of that coin will ever exist.  Like bitcoin before 12/17/17.

7  Economy / Economics / Wall street traders and bankers are bitcoin's enemies. on: July 11, 2018, 05:44:15 PM
Wall street and bankers are bitcoin's enemies.

As a means of maintaining value, in the present bitcoin has been defeated.  On 12/17/17 btc=$19379 and today 7/11/18 btc=$6345.  A drop of $13034 or $501/week.  I bailed when I looked at the slope and the previous 2 weeks saw 5.05%/week drop.  Right now the the $501/week average amounts to 2.57%/week.

One would be an idiot to leave money as bitcoin while it's losing value at 2.57%/week.

Bitcoin's enemies did this.  Wall street brokers and bankers used media to boost the value of bitcoin approaching 12/17/2017, when trading in bitcoin futures took effect, then casting shade driving bitcoin down, classic pump an dump.

I tried buying a few stocks years ago when my bank allowed trading.  I figured oh, no traders to deal with, I was wrong.  Buying a  few stock saw unexpected fees that made the whole exercise a bust.  This was years before bitcoin.  And moving money, the international fees were horrible.  That's why Wall Street brokers and bankers couldn't allow bitcoin to stabilize and rise in value.  They don't want our money in btc.  As fiat currencies increasingly continue to be watered down while money is pumped to the top 1%, the fixed quantity of bitcoin should only allow it to win.  At least that was the case until bitcoin futures trading took effect.

Will eliminating bitcoin futures trading fix it?  Big deposits and withdrawals will still work to pump money out even without bad press to drive value down.  Still, stopping futures trading will kill the incentive for some bad press.

Early on bitcoin was the place to be when  there was trouble.  That sure changed.  Right now with trade wars a reality one would think money would be heading to bitcoin in a big way.  Why isn't it?  Who's ox was getting gored that that changed?

8  Economy / Economics / _Who_ is causing the large swings in Bitcoin value? on: July 10, 2018, 04:43:42 PM
I've been a bitcoin owner for years.  I discovered a block pool mining with my then new Mercury.  As mining became less profitable I used my best Bitmain product to mine and reduce heating bills.  I was a hodl until this year.

Last year I was elated to see the rise up to December and had visions of buying a house for myself and one of my sons (the other doing very well).  Then that slide from 12/17/2017.  I held on through slides before, like when btc was down in the low hundreds but the steady drop at a rate of roughly 5%/week was just too much and I almost fully cashed out.  Of course the buildup and fall was due to futures trading.  Capitalism at its worst.  In economics we learned futures were started in the Chicago Mercantile, betting on acts of God, the weather.  But futures on other than crop yields is suspiciously like powerful forces in trading saw they had the power of gods to control future prices through media.  And they did and do.  Even Bill Gates said he could short Bitcoin and drive it down, but then his grandfather's family, Maxwell, owns one of the largest banks in the northwest.  I wonder if that bank is bitcoin friendly.

So, I'd been watching the drop.  It looked like someone was pumping value out of the ecosystem.  Was it Bitmain?  Not having confidence in the coins it mines?  Mining and cashing in?  But it wasn't just cashing in.  There would be a big drop in value, then sometimes a relatively stable period, then a big jump up.  Like catch me if you can, buy low and sell high.  But the trend was always down, that 5% per week.

Then recently, June 29, the big drops changed to big jumps.  Twice on June 29, once on July 2 and again on July 7.  I couldn't bring myself to trust the rise because it wasn't due to a confidence change but due to big money pumping it up.  Then yesterday a big drop.  Who the heck is going to put confidence in coin that visibly being bounced around by some manipulator?

My question was Who is it?  But maybe the subject should be Is it possible to ban bitcoin futures?  If futures trading is what's pumping money to the top 1% so steadily then bitcoin with futures trading is no better than fiat.

9  Bitcoin / Legal / MtGox FBAR Kraken on: May 15, 2018, 05:38:23 PM

I filed a FBAR for MtGox in 2013.  I have not renewed the FBAR for MtGox since, given the bankruptcy.

I have opted to have my claim paid out to Kraken in the form of btc.  My claim has been approved years ago.

Should I re-register my MtGox account with FBAR every year?

I'll register my Kraken account with FBAR hoping to nail down loose ends.  Should this be done annually regardless if the claim has not been paid and the account value is $0.00?

I found the IRS basis accountability difficult.  I note they may assess a fine for documents that can't be scanned.  Instead of using the IRS form for basis accountability, I put it all down on paper, my yearly 12/31 basis recalculation, and sent it all in.  They approved and figured my tax refund a few bucks higher than I had submitted!

10  Other / Off-topic / solar cells, battery wall, winter heating on: March 17, 2018, 04:28:51 PM
I heated my mobile home with a few old Bitmain miners this last winter using very little propane on the coldest days.  My S5 seems to have a value comparable to a heat pump, not paying for itself but cheaper than heating with electric.  Electric isn't that cheap here in Georgia but I'm guessing half of what I'd be paying on Long Island.

I have property and the thought of solar is usually in the back of my mind.  I had asked my insurance agent about buying a used EV but he threw shade on the idea.  Used EVs and rural distances don't mix well.  But more interesting is that I don't think the grid is ready for many EVs charging every night when the boss gets home from his commute, neighborhood transformers catching fire and what not.  And although most of Georgia under Georgia Power has net metering for solar, private electric companies in some parts are unregulated in that regard and not bound by the Georgia Power.  So, I wondered about a solar wall and solar cells unconnected to the grid for 24/7 mining.

Has anyone used a solar wall and cells to off grid power a miner 24/7?  If so what miner(s), what battery wall, and how many solar cells at what wattage?  I could picture putting the cells all on an old, no longer road worthy, trailer to avoid a boost in property tax.  And, if I ever buy an EV I could expand.

Thanks.

11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / any other forks besides bch giving btc equiv? on: January 23, 2018, 04:11:50 PM
I was quite happy with the bch fork.  Are there other forks that give btc holders a share of the new offerings simply for owning btc?  Smiley
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Nov.16 pool mining bitcoin2x on: November 05, 2017, 03:48:01 AM
So, on November 16, some pools are going to be mining bitcoin2x.  If the weather permits, not running miners unless it's cold as I do, I'd like to point a miner at a bitcoin2x pool.  Wonder how the difficulty is going to start.  After all, the difficulty on bitcoin is pretty high but there are a lot of pools mining bitcoin.  Will the initial difficulty likely be higher than warranted for the limited number of miners starting?  Unless they're pegging the starting difficulty low so those miners who are there at the start get a good take before the first difficulty rise.  A good reward for those who start will attract more miners and that increased hashing power, will make the higher difficulty warranted.  This is all guess work.  Will someone who actually knows what to expect give us the 411?  Thanks.

13  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / when a modern US bitcoin ASIC? on: November 01, 2017, 10:44:31 PM
I wonder.  Now that bitcoin is getting begrudging acceptance by Wall Street will Intel produce a state of the art ASIC with Wall Street's blessing or is it verboten to rock China's boat?
14  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Which forum/threads to follow for developments in the ASIC and populated boards? on: October 30, 2017, 04:11:06 PM
Which forum/threads to follow for developments in the ASIC and populated boards?

Lots of forums on bitcointalk, so where should I look for information on ASICs in production and for sale to those who make and populate their own construction PCBs?  Would that forum also follow ASIC development?  Getting old but I remember a widely circulated ASIC hoax from a former Eastern Bloc country, which I could remember its name, Primeasic or something?

15  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / replacing S3 boards with third party hashing boards on: October 30, 2017, 12:16:38 AM
Some months ago I briefly scanned an article about replacement boards I think for the S5 manufactured somewhere in Europe or Russia.  Today I looked and couldn't find it but anyway my S5 runs okay if a bit inefficiently.  I haven't fired up my heating system this year yet, keeping the living room warm with the S5 when it gets chilly.

I have two S3's, two S3+'s, and two C4's gathering dust.  I'd consider ripping these down to replace the boards if something good was available and not overly expensive.  I understand the norm is to sell the miners and upgrade but I wouldn't be able to handle the angst of a newbie unhappy that he's not pulling down great profits with a used piece of equipment.

What are my options?  Thanks.

16  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / not snarky, but is BCC considered an altcoin? on: August 23, 2017, 04:37:14 PM
I'm interested in learning about BCC mining, BCC pools,  and its mining profitability relative to BTC.  Questions like how the larger blocks effect pool mining.  But if this is the wrong forum I don't want to offend, just point me in the correct direction.

Had been locked out of the forums for months.  I don't know why.  Finally got to change a passwd on a second ID I had to create in my attempts to logon.
