1  Other / Off-topic / Fundraising for BOINC Farm on: December 08, 2019, 09:09:48 AM
Greetings, members of the crypto community!

I apologize in advance if I do not post this topic in the appropriate section of the forum.

I want to share my dream with you.
I have been involved in distributed computing since 2007 starting with United devices and then in the projects based on BOINC platform. I have always regretted that very few people are interested in voluntary assistance to science in principle, especially without personal benefit from it. But personally I did what I could. All processors and video cards in the house were involved in BOINC projects. And then mining came... And even so, part of the processor resources and part of the video cards remained involved in distributed computing. Yes, I agreed to pay for the electricity consumed during the calculations, because through such calculations I helped scientists. I participated and continue to participate in such projects as Rosetta@home, Einstein@home, LHC@home, GPUGRID and in some others.

But my dream is a couple of dozens (the more - the better) of modern powerful computers involved exclusively in BOINC projects. It costs a lot of money (in my understanding). About $300,000. The annual payment for electricity will be about $8000-$10000 (depending on the scale of such a mini data center).

Who knows, perhaps there are people on the planet who are not indifferent to the development of mankind, to the development of science. For my part, I am ready to offer skills in assembling, configuring and administering computers and organizing the infrastructure of data centers, knowledge of the scope of distributed computing projects and their features, but I need funds.
So if you are ready to provide financial assistance for the above-mentioned goals - here is my wallet 3QFxPygdjjjeoMauxt1yZsnnqocgy9f5DC

Starting from the raised amount $3000-$4000 I will be able to show ready and working assembly of single BOINC-machine. People all over the world will have an ability to track corresponding increase in myBOINC statistics, so they will see that there are no any lambos or yachts were purchased on their donations.

Today I see that for example Rosetta@home has 23000 tasks ready to be sent to volunteers' computers. Einstein@home has almost 170000 tasks to send. Processing of each task takes from 10 minutes to 24 hours (depending on whether it's a GPU or a CPU task). It mean that scientists of these (and many other) projects need our help. They need my help. We cannot raise money and buy a supercomputer for each team of scientists behind the aforementioned projects - it will cost much more than $300,000. But what I said above is what we really can do to help scientists who need computing power. A lot of it.

Ideally, I would like the number of jobs ready to be sent to be reduced to 50-100 in each project. Will we be able to do this?

So, if you want to make the world a better place, but don’t know where to start, let's try here?

p.s. Please do not laugh and do not consider me naive, as well as a bilker. The world does not consist of swindlers alone...
2  Economy / Service Announcements / Miner Hosting in Siberia by Rabinovitch on: April 11, 2019, 03:09:44 AM
Greetings miners!

If someone is interested to host their miners at facility with relatively low electricity cost ($0.07 per kWh, service fee is included), you are welcome!

I'm personally control your equipment. I take hashblades to repair if necessary. I take all the fuss. I can even buy the miners for you here in Russia, so you don't need to care about shipping it to me. You send funds, I buy asics for you and place it to our mining-hotel. "No frills, no fuss".  Cool No cheating.

The site where the miners are placed is relatively far from the city, so there are no any outmans or rubbernecks nearby. Though there are a video surveillance and alarm system, so as 24 hour security guard presence.

It looks like this (the picture is watermarked with my other nickname from other forum):

Yep, there is no too much Feng Shui there, but it is working since the end of 2017.

PM me for details if interested. Discounts for large placements of the asics. Wink

6  Bitcoin / Hardware / Hotmine X6 miner/upgrade kit review on: December 23, 2016, 03:36:38 AM
Greetings, miners!

Well, at last I have free time to create a more detailed post with review of Hotmine X6 upgrade kit for Antminer S5 (and looks like for S3 too).

A brief description of what does this kit (and the miner based on it) looks like has been posted here, so let's go into details.

The X6 miner is hashing at 6.1 Th being powered with 12V ATX PSU Hipro HPH850W. This PSU was included in that test setup for the conference. The web-UI is looking similar to Antminer's UI. The same root/root for username and password, the same pools configuration tab, the same miner status tab... Even the firmware upgrade process is the same. There's almost nothing new I can say about it.

My miltimeter showed 11.8 V at PCIE power connectors while the miner was hashing. In the UI you can see almost the same value. So here and below we can see that the miner is measuring the input voltage in a more or less precise way.

The miner is "rock solid" at this voltage:

We can see that the hashrate at the pool is the same as in UI:

Me and devs have discussed the suitable temperature mode for the Bitfury BF16BTC8162 chips. Briefly, the owner of the miner based on these chips should strive to maintain the temperatures around 60 degrees. At higher values there starts a degradation of usable performance, although the chip itself will hash even at 100-120 C. Take a look at the temperatures in web-UI. Note that there has been used not the most conducting thermal grease. It's cheap, but not so good (as usually). My IR thermometer showed that the chips placed far from the fan are hotter than those placed closer to the fan for a 2-3 C.

So if you plan to achieve higher hashrate better equip this miner with second fan. The connectors for fans are present at each hashing board.
Note that the temperature you see in "Miner status" tab is received with a thermistor placed in the middle of the PCB.

The power consumption "at the power socket" in this mode is about 716 Wt (keep in mind what kind of PSU was used). So the power efficiency at the power socket level is about 0.117 Wt/Gh. In web UI you can find the "Efficiency [J/Gh]" value. This value is calculated from voltage and current measured on hashing boards considering the consumption of the fan (which may vary depending on it's speed) and the consumption of the BBB controller. So it's like the efficiency at the PSU's output.

The noise level is about 59 dB. The noise (subjectively) probably will not annoy you if you keep the miner in the next room, but you definetely won't to sleep with this miner on your bedside table.  Smiley

Since the developers was talking from the beginning that the hashrate of this miner is mostly depends on voltage rather than on frequency I was not trying to achieve higher hashrate rising the frequency (at this stage). In addition, the ATX PSU was just 850 Wt. So I have powered the miner from the server PSU PS-2142-1D1 (1470 Wt) prepared for mining by my own hands. This PSU was tuned to 12.7 V in advance.

Note that this case that you see on the photos will not be included when you decide to buy these upgrade kits. It's just a case in which the 51ASIC company demonstrated this test unit at the Blockchain & Bitcoin Conference in Moscow.  Smiley

So the miner was hashing at ~7.52 Th:

Take a look at the input voltage value in the UI. And that is what has been measured by the multimeter:

The power consumption was around 965 Wt:

So the efficiency at the power socket is around 0.128 Wt/Gh.

But devs told about 13 V and even 13.6 V, which is also OK for these miners, so I set 13 V at my PSU. Here is the screenshot at 13 V:

The power consuption at this voltage is about 1053 Wt, so the efficiency is 0.134 Wt/Gh. The batteries in my camera has discharged at this moment so I have no photo of my power meter.  Embarrassed

Later I updated the firmware:

And at the pool's side it looks like this:

Well, the miner is solid even in this mode (at 13 V). But the temperatures are getting higher, so it's better to replace the thermal grease and to add second fan. Especially if you plan to run it at more that 13 V input voltage. Cold air from outside is OK too.  Smiley At 13.6 V miner should be hashing at 8.9 - 9 Th/s.

"Overclocking" the miner at 13 V with higher frequency values gives nothing that we could expect or desire:

Devs said that at 13.6 V the frequency can be higher than default, but we should ensure that heat dissipation is good enough. May be I'll try ti rise the voltage later.

You may have noticed that one of the "o"s in ASIC status field is in capital. It's not a mistake of bug. It's a designation for chip selected by the system for so-called "renonce". This chip is not hashing, it assigned to recover some kind of "wrong solutions" generated by other chips. You can choose whether to use one chip for "renonce" or to use one chip per hashing board in the "Advanced" settings.

I was trying to mine with this miner on p2pool using different nodes with lowest possible in my case latency. DOA hashrate is about 10%...  Sad

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Pinidea's X11 ASIC miner (500 MH) - to buy or not to... on: April 19, 2016, 08:23:51 AM
So http://pinidea.io/ announced that they are accepting an orders for their 500 Mh/s DASH ASIC miner (it appears that it should rather be called "FPGA miner" IMHO...).

Original thread: https://dashtalk.org/threads/asic-x11-miner-hashrate-500mh-s-320w-weighs-4-5kg.8099/

What do you guys think about it?.. Should anyone risk with his or her 500 DASH (or comparable BTC-amount) to obtain such a miner?..

Доброго всем! Кроме совсем уж козлов, конечно...  Smiley

Hello all!

I'll consider all your offers if you want to sell an Ares by Hashcoins or similar (Excalibur/Alcheminer/KnC) scrypt miner you own. Something with high enough hashrate and low enough price. I hate overpriced hardware.  Angry

Note that I am located in Russia so I need shipping. And the miner should be declared for customs as a kind of computer/server hardware with total price less than 1000 EUR.

Feel free to PM me with your offers.  Smiley Even if your miner's hashrate is a little less than signed in the subject.  Wink

Продам 2 шт. Bitmain AntMiner S3 B6.

20  Bitcoin / Hardware / ANTMINER S5: a freestyle review by Rabinovitch on: January 09, 2015, 07:21:46 PM
Greetings, miners!

Finally I got my test unit, later than all others, so let's try to play with it. ))

All of you have seen the S5 many times, so here is only one S5 photo, from an unusual point of view...  Cheesy

I've unpacked my new toy, and what do I see? Dust!

Oh, it's a test unit, so it doesn't matter. Besides... Never look the gift horse in the mouth.  Grin

And that plastic side panels looks so... Unreliable...  Undecided

I found that the controller board is not neatly connected, but it looks that this is the only possible position:

Also I found a slot for a flash card, and it's empty.

I thought that "now I need to buy a card, flash it with some image..." But S5 started to work without any of that actions.  Smiley

Well, PSU is connected (Chieftec APS-850CB if any - 850 W, 80+ Bronze, two 12V rails, and it has 4 (!) separate PCI-E power cables). Let's go!

...After switching a PSU on I realized what does it mean when other forum members writing in their reviews that S5 is loud. YES, IT IS.  Sad Especially right after powering on. It became a very little bit quieter after several minutes, but I still can hear it from another room even if the door to where S5 placed is closed. It's like a vacuum cleaner, someone already told this before... I have no a noise meter (and I doubt that I'll measure any new values, they all has been measured before me), but if anyone need, I'll take a noise meter for a while.

Right out of the box, at stock frequency 350 it gives about claimed 1.1 Th/s at Slush's pool:

Average speed in miner's GUI is a little less...

Working on BTCGuild pool the numbers are the same:

At BTCGuild's side:

Power consumption at the wall is 616 Wt with my PSU and at stock frequency.

Well, same value claimed at BITMAIN's website:

It's all on stock firmware:

Now let's try to update the firmware to newest version (in my case it's SD-S5-20150107.tar.gz) and see what will change. I've upgraded FW strictly according to S5's manual, and everything has been finished quickly and fine:

After a while I found that cgminer uses only half of controller's CPU time - before upgrade it was 90:

May be it's OK, I don't know, probably only Bitmain knows...  Huh

Hashing speed seems to be the same with this new FW, but there is appearantly less discarded shares quantity (calculating to discarded shares per hour). Sure ckolivas knows why. )) May be it's because of newer cgminer version (4.8.0 in this firmware)?

After 47 minutes on BTCGuild:

With normal temperature in the living room the boards of S5 are 51 C and 55 C with this stock fan. And it looks like huge part of air from the fan is blowing away upward from this open semi-case (since my S5 is placed at the glass shelf for TV and audio equipment), so the idea of making a kind of cover is looking not so useless...

I have the Navipower HDB-1212UA fan (it's very medium-priced but... 2800 RPM... 105.81 CFM...), will try it later. Another fans are coming too but not yet in my hands...

If S5 be able to work with reasonable temperatures using that fan - it would be great.

Later I'll share another results of testing and experiments. ))
