1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Man Stores Bitcoin on Chip Embedded Under His Skin on: November 12, 2014, 06:35:24 PM
A Dutch entrepreneur has gone to extreme measures to keep his currency safe - embedding a digital wallet under his skin to store bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Martijn Wismeijer, founder of bitcoin ATM firm Mr Bitcoin, underwent a procedure to inject an NFC (near-field communication) chip into each hand between the muscle tissue and the skin tissue.

"I did it because I wanted to experiment with storing bitcoins using subdermal implants because that's what I thought would like be the Holy Grail of contactless payments," Wismeijer told IBTimes UK.

The chip is 2mm x 12mm and is made of glass and can store 888 bites of user programmable memory - the equivalent of around 800 characters, or around 26 bitcoin condensed private keys.

Although primarily used as a bitcoin wallet, Wismeijer has found that the chips can also be used for a variety of other applications.

"I found you can use them for lot's of different things, like even as an alarm snooze button. To switch off my alarm I need to scan either one or two of the implants, so this way it takes a little bit of fiddling so you never oversleep again," Wismeijer said.

"I thought that if the storage is limited then there's no point in just getting one if I could have two, because with one I could store private information like cryptocurrency or two-factor authentication for passwords, while the other one I could use for public things like my emergency contacts or my business card"

Wismeijer described the pain of having the chip inserted as something akin to a body piercing. While he plans to sell the chips through Mr Bitcoin, Wismeijer recommends that customers to not attempt to install it themselves.

"They should go to a professional body manipulation artist otherwise it's going to be really messy and painful," he said. "It's not a DIY product really."

5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Ruble Collapse Could Fuel Next Bitcoin Run on: November 08, 2014, 02:46:21 PM
The Central Bank of Russia has gone to a de facto free float, as Ruble weakness overwhelmed its ability to effectively intervene. Now there are reports that Russia may ban the circulation of US dollars .
If this story is true, then wealthy Russians will need a way to convert Ruble holdings into US dollars.  One of the easiest and least transparent channels would be to buy bitcoin and then convert those holdings into other fiat currencies.
It appears this is already happening, as the Ruble price of bitcoin has been outpacing the gain in the US Dollar price of bitcoin.

Recall that the enormous run in bitcoin during 2013 ($200-$1100) was partially fueled by wealthy Chinese using bitcoin as a channel to withdraw capital from China. Also recall that the price crash in bitcoin was a result of the Chinese government cracking down on this practice.

In the coming weeks and months I will be watching for the Ruble price of bitcoin to far outpace the US Dollar price. Additionally, if bitcoin is being used as a capital flight channel it would not surprise me to see restrictions placed on bitcoin trading in Russia - luckily for us speculators that is probably far into the future…and at much higher prices.

6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Yes or No! on: November 07, 2014, 10:28:33 AM
Many prominent Bitcoin developers are actively in collusion with members of law enforcement and seeking approval from government legislators. We believe this is not in Bitcoin users’ self-interest, and instead serves wealthy business interests that make up the self-titled Bitcoin Foundation.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / CODY WILSON PLANS TO DESTROY THE BITCOIN FOUNDATION on: November 07, 2014, 10:26:52 AM
Upstart Business Journal reveals that crypto-anarchist Cody Wilson will run for a board seat on the Bitcoin Foundation for no other reason than to disband the organization from within.  His next opportunity will be in January 2015 when some seats will be up for election.

Wilson said:
“I will run on a platform of the complete dissolution of the Bitcoin Foundation and will begin and end every single one of my public statements with that message.”

Wilson is a co-founder of Dark Wallet, a project that adds layers of privacy and anonymity to Bitcoin transactions. He is also a co-founder and director of Defense Distributed, a stealth organization that made waves by releasing the specs of a 3D-printable gun. As his trajectory shows, Wilson is a staunch crypto-anarchist who wants to use emerging technologies such as 3D printing and Bitcoin to disrupt “the system.”

On the contrary, the mission of the Bitcoin Foundation is to “standardize, protect and promote the use of Bitcoin cryptographic money for the benefit of users worldwide.” In other words, taking Bitcoin mainstream. That requires working with the regulators rather than against them and making the necessary concessions to their compliance requirements. Therefore, the mission of the Bitcoin Foundation is evidently at odds with that of crypto-anarchists like Wilson.
8  Economy / Service Discussion / Google Campus London Installs Bitcoin ATM and Accepts Cryptocurrency Payments on: November 06, 2014, 06:30:10 PM
A bitcoin ATM has been installed at Google's Campus London, the tech giant's seven-storey hub for tech entrepreneurs in the UK capital.

It is the latest show of interest in bitcoin from Google and comes just a few months after the company partnered with digital wallet provider Coinbase to create a cryptocurrency price tracker.

The installation of the bitcoin ATM will make Google's London Campus the sixth location in London to offer the purchase of bitcoins with cash or credit card. It will be located in the campus' basement café and will enable patrons to use bitcoin to pay for food and drinks.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Winklevoss Bitcoin ETF Still Moving Through Regulatory Process on: November 06, 2014, 06:18:49 PM
Remember the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust? Arguably the most talked about exchange traded fund that has yet to come to market, twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winkelvoss filed plans for the Winkelvoss Bitcoin Trust in mid-2013, but the ETF has yet to debut.

Bitcoin enthusiasts looking to display their affinity for the digital currency via the ETF wrapper do not need to fret because the brothers assured investors that the ETF is “alive and well.” The comments were made in an interview with Bloomberg TV’s Erik Schatzker from the Money 2020 conference in Las Vegas.

“We’re still going through the regulatory process. Any ETF is a long process to get approved and, in this particular case, we’re dealing with a very innovative product, which is a digital asset which has not been done before,” Tyler Winklevoss told Schatzker.

Importantly, they noted that there has been nothing to lead them to believe that the regulatory process for the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust is going any faster or slower than with a more traditional ETF.

The brothers did note that the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust is being geared along the same lines as physically-backed commodities ETFs such as the SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca: GLD) and the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEArca: SLV). Those ETFs give investors exposure to an asset class, in those case gold and silver, without the ability to redeem shares of the trust for direct access to that asset. [Commodity, Currency Debate Swirls Around Bitcoin ETF]

The brothers also told Schatzker that they remain long bitcoin and continue to control about 1% of the market. Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency based on a peer-to-peer network and can be exchanged through computers internationally without a financial intermediary.

In May, a regulatory filing revealed the Winkelvoss Bitcoin Trust will trade on the Nasdaq. In July, an Form S-1 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission reveled the ETF, assuming it comes to life, will trade under the ticker “COIN.”
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Who uses bitcoin? on: November 06, 2014, 06:11:28 PM
The researchers collected Google Trends search query data from January 2011 to July 2013 for all US states, looking for terms related to bitcoin and its possible clientele.

Based on this data, the researchers constructed four possible categories of users for bitcoin: programming enthusiasts, speculative investors, libertarians and cybercriminals.

Illegal activity and computer programming were positively associated with bitcoin use, but there was no association for libertarian ideology or investment motives.

Previous research was also referenced, leading to the conclusion that the three main motives driving bitcoiners were curiosity, profit and political ideology. Yelowitz and Wilson warn that some of the correlations were “inherently difficult” to measure due to the sensitivity of bitcoin activity.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 6 Top Responses from Bitcoin Foundation Head Patrick Murck's Reddit AMA (1) on: November 06, 2014, 06:02:39 PM
Newly elected executive director of the Bitcoin Foundation Patrick Murck participated in an ask-me-anything (AMA) session on Reddit today, engaging the bitcoin community in a wide-ranging discussion to mark his new appointment.

Murck assumed his new position last week following the resignation of Jon Matonis, who will serve on the foundation's board through the year. Under its new direction, Murck indicated that the organisation will continue to defend bitcoin to policymakers and policy-focused groups while maintaining an open channel of discussion with the bitcoin community – goals he echoed throughout the AMA.

In his initial post, Murck introduced himself as a lawyer with 10 years of experience in policy and technology, before continuing to more advanced subject matter. Although some questions were unanswered at press time, his most memorable responses reflected his personal interest in payments innovation and professional interest in keeping open dialogue with banks and regulators.

Here are some of the top questions and answers from the AMA session. You can find the AMA session in full here

1: Washington and Wall Street

Q: (AKWAnalytics) – Do you plan on engaging the new Republican-controlled US Congress with regards to bitcoin, and more broadly cryptography? Any shift in strategy given the changes?

Additionally, any course of action with regard to Wall Street, or is regulation a prerequisite (hence my first question)?

A: I've found that bitcoin plays well with both political parties in US. Sometimes for different reasons. For us, the strategy is to be a resource on the technical rules that govern bitcoin and the social contract that allows the bitcoin network to regulate itself. We can be that resource for politicians or other groups and associations doing work on the ground.

For a lot of the traditional financial companies (banks and other investors on Wall Street), regulation is seen as validation. Whether you agree with that or not, some level of appropriate regulation will bring in new participants to the bitcoin ecosystem and seems inevitable.

Keeping that regulation sane and focused on actual risks is important.

2: The New York BitLicense

Q: (BTC123RN) – Hi Patrick, thank you for doing this so early in the morning. What do you think the impact of NYDFS regulation will have on other states? Any chance the foundation is working with states to build something less onerous?

A: We have had plenty of discussions with state regulators and they are watching how things unfold in New York. That doesn't mean they are interested in following New York's approach per se, but the "BitLicense" proposal has garnered a lot of attention both here and abroad.

What state regulators seem most concerned with is consumer protection and what happens if the citizens they are charged to protect lose their life savings in a bitcoin exchange meltdown. I think they would love to hear constructive thoughts on how they can do their job without getting in the way.

But, if you do reach out to your state regulator keep this in mind. As you pitch this cool new technology (or your business), you will tend to highlight all the ways that technology is different from everything out there in the market. When a regulator hears that something is "different" they think about how much work it's going to take them and their staff to understand how to deal with it. It's usually better to tell your friendly regulator all the ways that this new technology (or your business) is the same as something they already know how to deal with. That puts things in a useful context for them and let's you focus on the consumer benefits.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Micropayments Tool Dogetipbot Wins $445k From Investors on: November 06, 2014, 05:56:28 PM
The team behind dogetipbot, the popular tipping tool for the alternative digital currency dogecoin, has raised nearly $500,000 in a seed funding round.

The fundraising was led by Blackbird Ventures, a venture capital group based in Sydney, Australia. Additional investors, including angel investors Scott and Cyan Banister, also took part in the round. In total, $445,000 in new capital was raised for the project.

Dogetipbot enables microtipping, allowing users of its service to pledge dogecoin tips that can then be redeemed for the currency. Users can tap dogetipbot when pledging money on Reddit, Twitter and Twitch. To date, the service says it has processed more than 650,000 transactions.

CoinDesk spoke with Blackbird Ventures managing director Niki Scevak, who said that he and his team are interested in how digital currencies can be leveraged to make microtransactions economically viable.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / EFF: Bitcoin Is Free Speech on: October 22, 2014, 06:31:31 PM
As many other comments have pointed out, the BitLicense threatens to stifle the use of blockchain technologies, not just Bitcoin’s illegal and legal uses. The EFF “notes that digital currency protocols are used for more than just payments – they have expressive and associational uses, too.” EFF’s Special Counsel Marcia Hofmann wrote eloquently on the topic of free speech and Bitcoin in the full comments provided to the NYDFS and available for public perusal here:

The courts have long recognized that code is speech protected by the First Amendment. At their core, digital currency protocols are code. Attempts to regulate code must include robust protections to ensure constitutionally protected speech is not stifled, and the BitLicense proposal would undermine those First Amendment principles.

Internet users around the world should visit the EFF’s action site regarding the BitLicense. The EFF has a pre-written email that users can send to the NYDFS directed at both Superintendent Lawsky and General Counsel Syracuse. Lawsky has promised to have a revised BitLicense proposal by the end of October, something that everyone is looking forward to.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / EFF, INTERNET ARCHIVE, AND REDDIT ALL OPPOSE THE PROPOSED NEW YORK BITLICENSE BI on: October 22, 2014, 06:05:04 PM
Earlier today, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), the Internet Archive, and Reddit, all filed public comments to the NYDFS regarding their proposed BitLicense Bitcoin regulation. The EFF first posted about the BitLicense, simultaneously revealing their stance and prompting the populace to send their own comments to the NYDFS, last week. The San Francisco companies have given voice to an opinion about the BitLicense that doesn’t require any prerequisite knowledge about Bitcoin.

The public comment submitted today represents the opinions of three defining organizations from the Internet generation and is notable because it casts the BitLicense in the same light as SOPA and PIPA, a fitting comparison. EFF’s Activism Director Rainey Reitman summarized:

Digital currencies such as Bitcoin strengthen privacy and are resistant to censorship. We should consider this a feature, not a bug; it’s an innovative way of importing some of the civil liberties protections we already enjoy offline into the digital world.
