61  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why do bitcoins sell for so much on ebay? on: June 17, 2011, 10:39:20 PM
I see this market falling, but then I look at the completed listings on Ebay.  Some are going for 40 bucks a pop.

Is ebay the real value or are the markets the real value?  HMMMMM

62  Bitcoin / Mining support / Visiontek 6950 - no dual bios switch? on: June 17, 2011, 07:16:48 PM
I'm kinda new to all of this, but I learn fast.  Anyways I ordered a few 6950's from amazon and I got a different version than was shown in the picture.  It doesn't have a switch.. This means i wont be able to unlock it yeah?

I'm wondering how much I can get out of it if I don't unlock it.

Anyways thanks guys.. a little bummed.  Don't feel like returning and what not.
63  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Any Greek Bitcoiners here? on: June 16, 2011, 02:43:44 AM
I'm not, just wondering what its like there now.  Seems like a great place to introduce a new currency idea. Smiley
64  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin conspiracy theories. on: June 14, 2011, 04:25:37 AM
I've seen many youtube videos recently and other articles talking about how all this computing power is being used for something more sinister.  For example here is a snippet from mike Rivero's Article.  I'm wondering how to counter these accusations from my friends who refer me to these videos/articles

(from mike riveros article)
Here is my problem.

The BitCoin mining software uses a LOT of computer power for what we are told is a simple peer-to-peer cash system. Peer-to-peer file sharing does not require that kind of raw compute power. Neither does the level of digital signing the peer-to-peer cash system claims to use. There is a huge amount of computer power being expended on other unknown tasks. Some articles on just how BitCoins are awarded speak of "solving blocks", and therein lies my concern. As a part of the mining for BitCoins, a huge amount of computer power is being spent on cryptographic processing of these blocks, and nobody really knows for certain what is inside those blocks.

I am concerned that the BitCoin miner, along with passing BitCoins hither and yon, is actually a vast distributed code key-breaker, as I cannot think of anything else requiring that kind of computer power (as NSA's rumored expenditure on exaflop computers suggests). With enough raw computer power chained together in a few million BitCoin users, brute-force breaking of the keys of asymmetric encryption becomes achievable, even convenient. Great if the perps are reading Iran's government communications or congressional "Sexting" messages, but not so great if the target is banks, SSH transactions, https, utilities, your corporate server, and secured emails.

Modern computer crime has become very sophisticated, and cyber-criminals (and the NSA) would not hesitate to exploit a popular new peer-to-peer cash system to create a vast distributed key-breaking system.

--- I don't know THAT much about bitcoin so I figured I'd ask you guys.

Thanks

65  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Since the markets are boring how about more people bashing bitcoin? on: June 13, 2011, 11:01:44 PM
I don't even know what to say about this guy. Someone yesterday said "herp derp derp herp derp" or something like that.  I think that sums him up perfectly.
New Raw Dog video.

66  Other / Beginners & Help / Whats the difference between all the graphics card names? on: June 12, 2011, 09:34:08 PM
I'm trying to find the right cards for mining but I'm kinda going nuts.  Whats the difference between diamond, sapphire, ... for example I'd like to buy a 6970 card but I cant figure out which name to pick.  Is there a whole lotta difference?
67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Should the exchanges close on the weekends? on: June 12, 2011, 12:13:44 AM
I dont know much on how it works but I hear alot of people saying that the wire transfers and stuff doesn't work on weekends because banks are closed.  This seems to lead to more selling pressure on the weekends.   Wouldn't it be better for bitcoin if trading on the exchanges closed for the weekend? or does it not even matter?
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Can ISP's somehow interfere with Bitcoin? on: June 10, 2011, 12:10:43 AM
On another forum i'm on,  someone stated that all the government would need to do is pass laws so ISP's would just block "bitcoin packets" or something.

Could this theoretically happen?

He cited 2 wiki pages.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_shaping

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_v._Comcast

I'm sure this has been talked about, just wondering.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How would a P2P exchange work? on: June 08, 2011, 05:50:03 AM
I know that the exchanges are the weakest link in the system.  And after listening to that CBS interview today, where the guy talked about how they were closely working with governments to track transactions, I was kinda left with an empty feeling.

I was watching a Youtube video with Bruce Wagner I think it was, and he was talking about P2P exchanges opening up in the near future.  (with apps and things)

Is this true?

And if so how would it work.

If its not true, will we be relying on sites like Mt. Gox forever? Or is there some other plan from the amazing brains that are behind bitcoin?

Thanks
Mike

70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How is infinite divisibility different from infiniate printablitiy? on: June 06, 2011, 09:39:31 PM
I know that bitcoins are divisible by 8 decimal places or so, but I've also heard that they can be expanded if need be.

How is this different than inflating a currency.

I'm just can't seem to wrap my mind around this.

Sorry I'm kinda new, and am 100% behind the idea of this, just trying to understand a bit better.
71  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Treasure Hunt? on: June 05, 2011, 05:42:11 PM
Just had this idea when I woke up today and was wondering if anyone has done it.  Start a website were everyone donates to a pool.  After a certain time limit, the owner of the website (someone trustworthy in the community hopefully).  Hides the wallet (on cd's or zipdrives or both) somewhere in the world.  Every few days or so they can release hints on the location.  I think it would be fun to go bitcoin hunting.

Has this been done yet?
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / So I can delete my wallet now? on: June 04, 2011, 02:31:33 PM
Sorry don't mean to clog up the forum with such a newbie question.  I've backed up my wallet and encrypted it in 3 places, I'd like my balance to be zero in my wallet.  While bitcoin is closed would I just delete the wallet file and a new one will be made?

I know there are other threads on things like this, but I just want to hear it directly before I do something dumb.

Thanks guys.

Mike
73  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Beware of xerces on: June 02, 2011, 12:26:27 PM
Don't buy bitcoins from xerces.  He got me for 200 bucks.  He even admitted that he screwed me over.  I'm sure he'll change his screen name and go for more newbies but just letting you know.

74  Other / Obsolete (selling) / WTB 60 or so BTC on: June 01, 2011, 06:05:52 AM
Hi I'm pretty much new to this but want to invest.  I have paypal.  I also don't want to get scammed.  If we could talk on the phone first just so I know you're not from Nigeria that would be great.

Peace.  Thanks
Mike
