411  Economy / Computer hardware / Prospero X1 - SOLD OUT on: January 16, 2015, 04:35:34 AM
Anyone looking to buy a Prospero X1?  I just received 10 brand new units that are still in the box and come with the LCD screens.  They aren't the fastest miners, but have their own built in power supply/controller and are completely silent.  Might make for a great dorm or office miner to sap some free power with no noise...  Asking 0.35 BTC shipped or 0.3 BTC if you provide the shipping label.  I'm also willing to trade for things...
412  Bitcoin / Hardware / [Review] Bitmain Antminer S5 on: January 04, 2015, 11:15:07 PM
Bitmain Antminer S5
Disclaimer: I was given this unit in exchange for my honest review.  P2Pool was used for hashrate testing.

My S5 was delivered by UPS and required a signature.  It was held in place with foam inserts and while it did get the job done, the case on the S5 is made of a thin plastic and only covers the sides leaving some parts exposed, which worried me a bit.  However, no damage was done so I was satisfied with the packing job.

Setting up this miner was pretty easy.  While there is no url link to find the miner's ip like with Spondoolies, I did notice that the S5 accepts any pcie cable, and not just pcie cables with a centered clip on the back (the SP20 wouldn't take my 6+2pin pcie cables because the clip on the back isn't centered).  After your cables are plugged in, you power it on and hear the fan spin up and down a few times before it is ready to go.  The miner starts up fairly loud and doesn't have an adjustable fan setting, which may not make it ideal for home miners.  The interface gets the job done and once I got familiar with all the settings I was more than satisfied with it.  I wanted to get settings near what you would expect from an SP20 for this test, so I decided to test it at stock levels.  It should be noted that the S5 is easily underclocked and has the ability to beat the SP20 on efficiency with the proper settings.

Using the default frequency of 350M my S5 was able to get 1.13TH/s while using 661 watts (0.58W/GH) and exhausting 122 degree heat.  A frequency setting of 325M yielded 1.05TH/s while using 563 watts (0.53W/GH).

Overall I would say this is a great miner and definitely competitive.  It's lower price tag than the SP20 makes it a good option for large scale mining operations, the budget miner that can deal with noise, or someone who wants to tinker with it and optimize the sound/efficiency levels.  The interface gets the job done and is simple enough that I think anyone could figure it out without needing a guide.

In conclusion, the Antminer S5 is a top tier miner.  It's cheaper & cooler than it's closest counterpart (SP20) and is available to ship from stock for as low as $480 on amazon.com.  I am definitely grateful to Bitmain for the opportunity to review this product and I will keep my eye on their offerings in the future.  If you are searching for a cheap, competitive mining product with lots of customization opportunities, you can't go wrong with the S5 from Bitmain.  I even purchased an additional unit for my mining operation at retail price and was happy to do so.

415  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] ASICMINER PRISMA - $0.36 per GH! on: December 21, 2014, 05:59:28 PM
I've got an ASICMINER PRISMA I'm willing to sell.  All 4 boards are working and I have both types of controllers.

I'm looking to get the price that ASICMINER would pay for compensation.  I am doing this because 1) I don't need to keep the fan/heatsinks and 2) I want to receive payment now as opposed to shipping back the boards and waiting for compensation.

The buy-back price for you is 1.39 btc each(0.3475 btc per board), and 0.069 btc per controller.

So I'm looking for 1.459 BTC + actual shipping cost (I'll throw in the uart controllers free).  PM me to make it yours.
416  Bitcoin / Hardware / [Review 14] Spondoolies SP20 on: December 21, 2014, 04:37:50 AM
Spondoolies SP20
Disclaimer: I was given this unit in exchange for my honest review.  P2Pool was used for hashrate testing.

My SP20 was delivered by Federal Express and required a signature.  It was held firmly in place by cardboard and I think that was a good choice given the miner is well built and has a protective casing with no exposed parts.

Setting up this miner was a breeze.  It was as simple as plugging in 4 6-pin PCIe power cables and a network cable.  After your cables are plugged in, you power it on and hear the fan spin up and down a few times before it is ready to go.  The miner starts up with a default fan setting of 80.  This is definitely loud, similar to a hair dryer or Prisma, but you do have the option to lower the fan setting down to 40.  I found using a fan setting of 40 keeps my miner plenty cool and about as loud as a microwave, which doesn't bother me when it is behind a closed door. The interface for this miner is great and full of options.  You navigate to myminer.io using any browser on your network to enter your pool information or adjust voltage/fan settings.  Since I like to mine as efficiently as possible, I thought I would try some of the lower voltage settings to see what kind of readings I would see.

Using a voltage setting of 0.62 my SP20 was able to get 1.2TH/s while using 640 watts (0.53W/GH) and exhausting 124 degree heat.  Impressive.

Overall I would say this is hands down the best miner I have used to date.  The interface is extremely impressive and simple enough that I think anyone could feel like a pro.  I noticed it even has an option for plugging a usb wifi adapter directly into the SP20 to free yourself from the need of a network cable.  While I haven't tested that feature, I thought it was an awesome and unexpected addition.  I do have a couple interface items for my wish list though.  The option to set your pools from failover-only to balanced would be nice and I didn't see a place to setup a static IP (did I miss it?).  The SP20 is great.  It's quieter, cooler, and more efficient than it's closest counterpart (Prisma) and is encased giving it a well built feeling.  I am definitely grateful to Spondoolies for the opportunity to review this product and I will keep my eye on their offerings in the future.  If you are searching for a miner, there is no doubt this is the best you will currently find on the market.
