1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Bitmain Made As Much Money As Nvidia In 2017 on: February 25, 2018, 03:06:03 AM
Quote
This week, Bernstein analysts released a report into Bitmain’s operations. It estimates the Chinese firm to have made $3-$4 billion last year from mining cryptocurrency and for selling the equipment for others to do the same.

If Bernstein’s figures are accurate, Bitmain pulled in the same amount as Nvidia last year. Yet while Nvidia is a household name, few people outside of the cryptocurrency space have even heard of Bitmain. Bernstein calculates Nvidia to have made $3 billion in 2017, but points out that it took 24 years for the company to attain that profit level; Bitmain has achieved the same feat in just four years.

The report went on to predict that Bitmain will further increase its dominance of the mining business this year, noting “Bitmain will likely lead the cryptocurrency asic industry and migrate some of its chips to 10nm and the most advanced 7nm. That will make the company one of the top five users of TSMC’s 7nm in 2018, with demand comparable with Qualcomm’s, HiSilicon’s, or AMD’s.”

Proof of the adage that the people making the most money during a gold rush are those selling shovels. Maybe another reason why GPU prices are up?

2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / ASRock H110 Pro BTC+ Motherboard Spectre Bios Patch v1.60 w/ PCIe Slot Detection on: January 19, 2018, 07:25:52 PM
ASRock has released a Bios update to patch the Spectre vulnerability on their motherboards, including the H110 Pro BTC+. I copied the v1.60 Bios to a USB flash drive and updated to the latest Bios via the Instant Flash utility in the Tools section of the Bios.

Be sure to save your Bios configuration profile settings to an external USB or disk from the OC Tweaker section of the Bios before updating as the new Bios will return to the default settings. There was no noticeable drop in performance for me.

The latest Bios also adds a PCI-E slot detection diagnostic module to the Bios setup page that dispalys the PCI-E slot state for troubleshooting, similar to the Asus B250 Mining Expert motherboard.

It also gives information on the CPU & Memory installed.

3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Burned 18 AWG Wire And 8-Pin VGA GPU Power Connectors on: December 12, 2017, 11:24:40 AM
Wanted to share what happened when I used a dual 4-pin molex to a single 8-pin PCI-E VGA power adapter with a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 570 dual mining ETH that also had the 6-pin plugged in from a different PSU cable. The PCI-E 8-pin connector is rated for up to 150 W and clearly the 18 AWG copper wire wasn't able to handle the constant draw despite being split over two molex connectors.

A heads up to those who use 18 AWG wire in adapters and spitters to power 8-pin PCI-E VGA power connectors. If you're PSU doesn't have enough 8-pin connectors for all your cards, you NEED to get a bigger PSU or use a dual PSU setup so that you have enough connectors fto run all your cards safely.

4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Crimson Relive Win 10 Drivers Now Support 12 AMD GPU's with Compute Workloads on: October 24, 2017, 03:15:50 PM
New option in Radeon Settings toggles the ability to switch to Compute/Graphics mode.

With their latest GPU driver, Radeon Software version 17.10.2, AMD has added support for several new features to their GPU, which includes a feature that is targeted specifically at cryptocurrency miners.

This new driver adds to Radeon Settings a new GPU workload option, which defaults to Gaming but now can be toggled to load a "Compute" mode, which is designed to offer the best performance on compute-oriented workloads, like cryptocurrency mining.

If this new function works as advertised, AMD GPUs should be able to achieve higher hash rates without much or any change in power consumption, which is great news for miners. AMD has also updated their drivers to offer support for up to 12 individual AMD GPUs (Polaris or newer) in a single system, allowing more GPUs to be connected to a single motherboard for the purposes of mining. This feature could be used for other tasks, but we all know that mining is what AMD is aiming for here.

Looks like AMD is realizing GPU mining is going to be around a while  Grin
