Is there a market for this?
182  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Seriously guys, why? on: August 22, 2011, 06:53:00 PM
In my opinion, aside from it being incredibly obvious that all these alternative cryptocurrencies are made with the sole intention of making their creators rich (jealous of Satoshi much?), I think you guys should stick with one digital cryptocurrency, max.  Given its relatively short life-span and the number of unresolved problems associated with it, we can't even call Bitcoin a success yet, although I'm sure those who have profited significantly would be quick to call Bitcoin a success.  At least, it's not a success when compared to fiat currency which has its security and economy in tact.

Sometimes I wonder how often the members of this community realize how much they marginalize their selves.  Everyone's clients/miners/exchanges are ridiculously difficult to use for the average person, and if these issues still exist with the Google of digital cryptocurrencies (i.e. Bitcoin), how do you expect these other silly currencies with dumb names to work (town coin?  GTFO)?

I think all these cryptocurrencies give the Bitcoin community a bad name.  I think it perpetuates the 'geekiness' of Bitcoin -- imagine the average joe coming on here and then reading about namecoin, solid coin, IOcoin, selfish coin, nerd coin, haven't-gotten-laid-since-2009-coin...all these currencies give the impression we're all just a bunch of greedy fucks with no long-term vision of communal success.  If people put half as much time into stimulating the Bitcoin economy as they did devilishly programming their own cryptocurrency code, maybe at least one of these currencies would have a shot (again, i.e. Bitcoin).

Quit marginalizing the community.  Bitcoin is the only one that has a shot at mainstream popularity, so quit marginalizing the community with all this nerd crap like alternative cryptocurrencies, the word "troll" (Jesus Christ I hate when people say troll, and grandma does too), ridiculous clients and miners, etc.  People like simplicity. This complexity isn't cool.  It's chilly.  And chilly ain't never been cool.
183  Economy / Trading Discussion / Pussy Traders at TradeHill on: August 19, 2011, 05:12:58 PM
You've got to be kidding me.  As of now (12:09 p.m. US Central Time) I've been watching the charts on Mt. Gox Live go nuts.  And what about Tradehill?  Last deal...31 minutes ago.  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!  If I had USD to buy, I'd buy, but I need to SELL first to buy you pussies.  Get picked on too much in high school and now you guys can't play ball?

185  Economy / Speculation / Google Trends 8/16/2011 on: August 16, 2011, 06:29:16 PM
Well, a look at Google trends indicates increased interest in the past couple of days.  Do you think this is related to the conference this upcoming weekend?  Might be the time to buy...

Edit:  I recognize the data for this assumption is minimal as it seems the increase started only 2 days ago and may just as well fall off again tomorrow.

187  Economy / Services / Move your rig and pay 40% of current electric bill (Midwest) on: August 12, 2011, 10:19:55 PM
Hello.  On the off-chance that someone in the Midwest (especially Chicago area) would like to take advantage of the fact that I have all utilities paid, I am offering you the chance to move your rig into my place to take advantage of this awesomeness.  Show me a current electric bill from 1 month of mining, and I will let you mine at my place for 40% of your bill.  So, if your bill was $500, I will charge you $200 to mine at my place.

Thoughts?
188  Economy / Goods / [WTS] Textbooks? Gauging interest on: August 12, 2011, 09:39:03 PM
Hello,

I'm a graduate student and I have a couple thousand bucks worth of textbooks.  Is there a market for that on here?  I studied at UC Santa Barbara, North Central College (private college in Illinois), and am currently attending a graduate social work program in Chicago.

I have tons of books ranging many subjects...Many psychology and social work books, Biology, calculus for social sciences, statistics, philosophy, religious history, Buddhism, American history, environmental studies, etc.

Is anyone interested in these?  I'm gauging interest.

189  Economy / Gambling / Team ponzi? Can someone shed some light on this? Edit: [Kind-of Solved] on: August 12, 2011, 09:21:27 PM
So, excuse me if I'm having a mental lapse at the moment but...assuming no jackpot and no fees.....

If 4 people coordinated together and alone for 4 different 6-round ponzi games....couldn't all win, always?

For example, a 1 BTC deposit with 15% ROI...

1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 payout  --> pot = 1 BTC
2.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 payout --> pot = .85 BTC   1.) paid
3.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 payout --> pot = .7 BTC     2.) paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 payout --> pot = .65 BTC   3.)paid
1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .5 BTC                4.) paid
2.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .35 BTC              1.) paid
3.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .2 BTC                2.)paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .05 BTC              3.)paid
1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = 1.10 BTC
2.) Deposit 1 BTC -->   1.15 --> pot = .95 BTC              4.)paid
3.) Deposit 1 BTC -->   1.15 --> pot = .8 BTC                1.)paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .65 BTC              2.)paid
1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .5 BTC                3.) paid
2.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .35 BTC              4.) paid
3.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .2  BTC              1.)  paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .05  BTC             2.)  paid
1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = 1.05 BTC
2.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .90  BTC             3.)  paid
3.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .75  BTC             4.)  paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC  --> 1.15 --> pot = .6 BTC               1.)  paid
1.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .45 BTC             2.)  paid
2.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .3  BTC              3.)  paid
3.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = .15  BTC            4.)  paid
4.)  Deposit 1 BTC -->  1.15 --> pot = 0                       1.)  paid

Player 1   = 6 deposits and win 6.9 BTC
player 2 = 6 deposits and win 5.75 BTC
player 3 = 6 deposits and win 5.75 BTC
player 4 = 6 deposits and win 5.75 BTC

Game 2, player 2 starts and wins 6.9 BTC, all others win 5.75
Game 3, player 3 starts and wins 6.9 BTC, all others win 5.75
Game 4, player 4 starts and wins 6.9 BTC, all others win 5.75

4 game deposit for all 4 players = 24 BTC  but all win 24.15 BTC

Now this seems like a ridiculous amount of work and coordination, but scaled up, who knows....for example, a starting deposit = 100 BTC  where everyone would walk away with 15 BTC by the end

Why, and how, does this work?  Am I missing something?  Why do the total winnings end up to be more than the initial deposits, and where does the ROI come from?

190  Economy / Economics / (I think) Bitcoin value needs to stay at at least $10 for the next 2 weeks on: August 09, 2011, 11:10:09 PM
This is my reasoning...

The Bitcoin conference in NYC is coming up shortly and there will be a lot of media/press coverage.  How disappointing would it have been if the conference was several days ago when Bitcoin was at it's lowest point in months?  How would the media report on the conference amidst the slow and continuous decline in value?  I think the conference can benefit from today's upswing if it continues to hold as this will give the impression of the market's resiliency.  Then, the media outlets may be more prone to portray Bitcoin with an optimistic overtone.  I think if Bitcoin can sustain or even increase its value up to the date of the conference, then there may be a good possibility that we will see a huge new influx of investors.
191  Economy / Goods / 1 BTC - Random Cut Gemstones [SOLD] on: August 09, 2011, 09:24:10 AM
Hello.

I thought this might be a fun and interesting offer.  For 1 BTC, I will send you a random assortment of 3 cut gemstones in a plastic, padded gemstone container.  2 BTC gets you 8.  I do NOT know what many of the gemstones are.  But, I also have a few other gemstones the identify of which I DO know.  If I receive two or more offers, I can guarantee that I will include at least one of the following in someone's shipment - Chrome Diopside, Peridot, Ruby, and Emerald.  I am not a gemstone expert, so the others you receive may be valuable and I wouldn't even know it.

10 9 BTC gets you 50 including a guaranteed pink sapphire, a guaranteed beautiful forest green chrome diopside, and a pair of identical and exquisitely-cut peridot gems that would make fantastic earrings for a lady friend.

Who's interested?

Edit:  Here are some sample pictures.

192  Economy / Goods / [WTB] Ipad on: August 07, 2011, 06:44:51 PM

193  Other / Meta / Maybe I'll have better luck in Meta on: August 07, 2011, 06:16:02 AM
I posted something similar in off-topic.  I seriously mean what I'm about to say, and I hope you listen.

STOP using the word "troll."  It's used entirely too often, it's thoughtless, it's unoriginal, it's a bandwagaon word, and it's used too often as a reply to people that have legitimate concerns about the current state of Bitcoin.  Only the super-nerdy use 'troll.'  Nobody on the street knows what this means except as a reference to bridge-dwelling creatures.  This is part of the reason the average citizen wants nothing to do with bitcoin.  It ties into Bitcoin's stigma as being a currency only used and understood by the super-techie and ultra-geeky.

This forum acts as a main hub for Bitcoin community users.  If you want Bitcoin to become more accessible to the average person, the community needs to become more accessible as well, not just an understanding of the Bitcoin software.

After I became jr. member, I posted a serious thread about the philosophical shortcomings of Bitcoin as a currency of the future.  I was slammed with "troll" claims.  A friend of mine read through the forums and because of that he wants nothing to do with Bitcoin.  His reasoning?  He thought everyone on here was a bunch of whiny teenagers and he would never want to do business with any one of you.  He wondered why you weren't all off playing Starcraft and jacking off to Princess Leia.

It seems more and more posts are filled with "troll" cries and, ironically, it seems that more and more often the "troll" is right.  Honestly, how many people were called trolls for predicting a rapid BTC price drop?

Do you see the analysts on CNBC screaming "TROLL!  TROLL!  DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!" while discussing the NYSE?  No.  Why?  They understand what it takes to be successful in life, and being a bunch of name-calling children doesn't fit the bill.

Rant ended.
194  Other / Off-topic / The word "Troll" on: August 06, 2011, 06:49:20 PM
What are you, a bunch of nerds or something?  Quit using it.  It makes otherwise intelligent people look like little children name-calling.  Find something more clever or just keep quiet.  I would love to see the dudes discussing the NYSE on CNBC being like "TROLL!   TROLL!   TROLOLOLOL!"  Seriously.  This is the reason none of you scored any pussy in high school.
195  Other / Meta / New Idea for "Vendors" Subforum on: August 05, 2011, 02:48:12 AM
Hi,  I'd like to humbly propose an idea for a new 'vendors' subforum.  I know that vendors announce new sites in other subforums like the marketplace and project development subforums, but we've reached what I believe is a critical point where, in addition to the brilliant idea to add a security subforum, we need a subforum that focuses explicitly on established vendors by category.  Why?  Because Bitcoin DESPERATELY needs infrastructure growth.  I know the Bitcoin Wiki has something similar, but I think we need something like that on this forum.  For example, click on 'Vendors' subforum, and you can then click on specific item threads such as "food," "clothing," "technology," "precious metals," etc. which would then include all vendors selling products pertaining to that category.

The idea is basically to create a subforum that acts as a virtual mall, where you can stroll from store to store and gaze at the myriad items you can buy with your BTC.  The inclusion of polls relating to each vendor may also help as to allow customers to rate their experience of shopping as it relates to their perceived level of security, site layout, product selection, etc.  These polls could help to establish a general ranking system for each vendor in each product category.  Then, a forum member may glance at these rankings, see that so-and-so's site is ranked the highest in that category, and be encouraged to shop there.

This would help promote competition in the marketplace which is a VERY good thing.  Competition will lead vendors to strive for maximum security and, in general, maximum utility for their customers.  This subforum would therefore require a lot of maintenance and upkeep by admins, but I think in general it would be a wonderful step for the growth of Bitcoin infrastructure.  As it stands, I think the marketplace subforum is frankly too large to sift through to find any one site in particular and know how that site stacks up against others.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

197  Economy / Goods / Magic the Gathering Cards For Sale - Mostly 3rd/4th edition, some others on: August 03, 2011, 01:01:30 AM
Hello.  I am offering to sell some of my Magic the Gathering cards.  Someone had communicated interested in purchasing some of them.  Unfortunately, he apparently had gotten sick and I have not heard from him since.  Hope the dude is ok!

Anyway, I began playing magic cards around when 4th edition was released.  I was about 10-11 at the time.  I played casually with friends (mostly, it was my older brother and his friends) for about 2 years, and the cards have since been stored in those plastic card containers with the plastic-hinge lids that you find at card shops.  If you are wondering about wear and tear, my cards are generally all in very good condition.  There may be some very minor dust/dirt accumulation on the surface from fingers touching them while playing games, but other than that, there are no creases and there is very little wear and tear on the edges.  Overall, my cards are in very good condition since I took pride in my collection.

Below is a list of the most interesting (or nostalgic) cards I could find.  I will accept lot offers as well as individual offers in BTC.  You must also pay shipping.  Prices are negotiable, but keep in mind that nostalgia and single vs. multiple cards may impact my accepted value of the cards.

198  Economy / Trading Discussion / Help? Tradehill Question on: August 02, 2011, 04:23:19 AM

199  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Tradehill BTC deposit problem (possible) on: August 02, 2011, 04:16:58 AM
Has this ever happened to anyone?

Click on deposit.  Enter amount of BTC to deposit (in my case, 3.5).  Then, you go to your Bitcoin client and choose to send BTC to the address listed in Tradehill Dashboard.  You do not enter 3.5 because your wallet contains ~ 3.72 BTC and you forget.  Ever forget?  Happened to me.  Anyway, off went my 3.72 BTC.  25 confirmations later (at the time of this posting), my BTC seem to be nowhere, neither in my Bitcoin wallet nor appearing as credited in my Tradehill Dashboard.  The transaction on the Dashboard still says "in process."  Anyone know how this problem is handled?  I emailed them already because apparently I'm very impatient when I don't know things.  I hate not knowing things  Huh
200  Economy / Speculation / I'm either deaf or the volume isn't high enough on: July 30, 2011, 03:20:31 AM
What's with the super-low volume?  I mean, I get Dwolla deposits are down, but that shouldn't affect people with $ or BTC already in their accounts.  Is this related to the reinstatement of Mt. Gox trading commissions?  Current volume (according to Bitcoinwatch) at Mt. Gox is below 6,000 and at one point Tradehill's 24hr volume was below 500 earlier in the day.  It wasn't even #2 in volume at that point.  And yet, the price isn't fluctuating significantly.

Is everyone bearish at the moment?  I know I am (I'm passive by nature Grin ).
