1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / PSA: **WARNING** ACTIVE PHISHING CAMPAIGN AGAINST BitcoinTalk and BTC-e USERS on: May 03, 2017, 12:50:02 AM
Some asshole initiated a phishing campaign against the users of BTC-e and BitcoinTalk.
They are exploiting the leaked DBs from the major hacks in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

The ones I detected are:
1) Targeting BTC-E users: spoofed emails from LocalBitcoins
2) Targeting BTC-E users: spoofed emails from Blockchain.info
3) Targeting BitcoinTalk users: fake emails from Btc-e with some attached payload.
4) +Several failed login attempts.

The last thing I heard was that the BitcoinTalk DB was being offered for sale in 2016.
Considering this "explosive" sudden campaign my speculation is that either some asshole bought it or it was finally released to the public.

Users of BTC-e and BitcoinTalk who used the same emails to register to all these sites should take extra precaution.
I highly suggest to change not only the passwords of every service (if you haven't already... come on, it's been more than 3 years) AND ALSO change your email addresses.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Breaking News: NEM will be used by Japanese Banks! on: December 16, 2015, 07:57:09 PM
Project NEM (currency XEM) seems to be doing great!

Quote from: jabo38
Today, I have some MAJOR announcements concerning Makoto’s work. I have constantly said that he was in “meetings” and today I would like to give some information about some of those meetings.

You may have recently noticed that there was a press release stating Infoteria is working in partnership with Tech Bureau, an agency that Makoto is teamed with and uses NEM technology. Since their press release, they have had their stock increase $70,000,000. Infoteria connects over 5,000 Japanese businesses providing tech solutions for them.
http://www.prweb.com/releases/2015/12/prweb13122409.htm3
http://www.coindesk.com/press-releases/infoteria-private-blockchain-startu/4

And just today, a major bank in Japan has announced it too will be partnering to build on NEM and Mijin. For those of you who don’t know, Mijin is a private ledger version of NEM that has long been testing behind the scenes, and that uses the same APIs as NEM, so that companies using Mijin will also have easy access to the NEM main chain. The last announcement about Mijin over a month ago from the devs stated that it is running on 15 second blocks, with 100 tx/s very smoothly. It of course is also equipped with namespaces, mosaics, and messaging as well as NEM’s advanced security features and multisig 2.0.

SBI is the largest online bank in Japan founded in 2007 (by much older companies) with over 2,000,000 customers, access at every convenience store in Japan, and 3.4 trillion yen (27 billion USD) in holdings. They are looking to use NEM’s blockchain technology and services built on top of it to expand their reach as a digital bank. https://www.sbigroup.co.jp/english/company/group/netbank.html3

Additionally, Tech Bureau and Sakura Internet have announced a partnership. Sakura Internet is a major provider of cloud service providers (think AWS but for Japan). Sakura is offering free 6 month service of Cloudchain’s from the Mijin system starting today for developers and businesses to test with additional special services being provided for financial services testing Mijin. http://bitcoinist.net/mijin-offering-blockchains-world-free/5

Since announcing this press release in 1.5 hours there stock trading was stopped as it reached its daily limit for increase.

I honestly never thought they had the clout to reach out and make deals with institutions.
From being a mere altcoin curiosity in the playground, it seems that they jumped to become one of the major players.
Congrats to Makoto and the team!
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Speculate! Which altcoin will -eventually- reach parity with BTC? on: May 27, 2015, 01:13:31 AM
So here we are, which coin do you think it will dethrone bitcoin or at least will reach parity.
After selecting your bet, I would like you to post the reasons of why you think your selected one will rule.

To da moon!
4  Economy / Economics / Reasons to HODL! on: October 05, 2014, 05:00:09 AM

I am reminding you guys some relevant facts:

1) Paypal is accepting bitcoins
2) Bill Gates declared to be a bitcoin fanboy, very interested in its technology. (So bad he can't own it! Ha)
3) A bitcoin ETFs will be launched soon in Wall Street.
4) SecondMarket is a bitcoin trust with over 70Millions in investments.
5) Pantera Capital has been dealing in bitcoins since the beginning.
6) Even if you don't like it, companies offering user friendly insured wallets popped up in our ecosystem such as Xapo and Circle. Both have substantial investments behind and their products are quite impressive.
7) Assholes such as Butterfly Labs and MtGox are gone. Amateur time is over.

Any other reason comes to mind?
I think these are already quite plenty.

7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / The rise of the Bitcoin Nation on: September 16, 2014, 04:38:35 AM
A year ago I posted similar ideas:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=171412.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=259541.0

At that time people called these ideas to be outlandish, in just one year we ended up having projects such as these: http://panampost.com/belen-marty/2014/08/28/dominica-will-be-first-nation-with-universal-bitcoin-possession/

In just one year the bitcoins boomed, flourished and it is being adopted everywhere.
Soon the dream of a fully self-sustaining ecosystem will be true and a bitcoin Economy, independent from nationality and geography, will exist.
We will eventually be able to calculate the GDP of this stateless digital economy, or metaeconomy.

It is freaking exciting to be alive in this era, and let's think about the crazier paradigms that the future will bring us, for example, the concept of Decentralized Autonomous Corporations.
If you don't know what it is, check this essay from Vitalik (the founder of Ethereum):
http://bitcoinmagazine.com/7050/bootstrapping-a-decentralized-autonomous-corporation-part-i/
Currently DACs are being implemented in several projects such as NXTcoin and projects such as OpenBazaar.
This will eventually rock very hard the existing economic systems, and it will force a reorganization of our society.

Now lets move to the reorganization of data itself, the ambitious MaidSafe project that attempts to decentralize the whole internet, breaking with the client-server model to a much more redundant and secure system.
Never heard of it? Check these links out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wtb6L7Bg3zY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLA77zxk-vA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlj0DCa7LyU
http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/23/maidsafe/

With MaidSafe we can forget about backuping our files or worrying about someone hacking into our account and leaking sextapes, people eavesdropping our calls and even slashdotting or DDoSing a server (in fact, under their design, the more traffic, the faster the load). And even better, we can forget about paying for hosting.
And again, we can make money by just leaving the PC on and sharing resources.

All the pieces are getting together (money, finance, economy, infrastructure, DACs), and that is not all, the political system might also be influenced by the blockchain.
Better check this news out: http://www.bitcoinx.com/danish-political-party-adopts-blockchain-based-system-for-internal-voting/
Incorruptible transparent voting system anyone? Transparent financial system anyone?
It pretty much sounds like the prelude to an utopian society.
We better be ready for the multiple paradigm shifts that are about to come with multiple disruptions, and we are not only about to witness history, we are also being part of it.

Welcome to the future.
Welcome to the silent revolution!

It is fucking great to be alive in the 21st century.
(We just need flying cars and levitating hoverboards)
8  Economy / Service Announcements / [New!] Liquor Store accepts Bitcoins: CityWineCellar.com (nationwide delivery!) on: November 19, 2013, 05:48:06 AM
Hey everyone!
Now that we are about to hit 1000 USD per bitcoin, lets get ready to pop that champagne!
Is there a better way to celebrate than buying booze with bitcoins?

Well, I tried to convince a pretty big liquor store to start accepting bitcoins, and  they decided to join the bitcoins mania!
You can order online from CityWineCellar.com and pay with bitcoins!

As a launching promotion in the bitcoin community:
You can get a $10 off for any orders higher than 100 USD with the coupon "BtcPromo".
They ship nationwide via UPS (whoever receives the package must be 21 yrs old, the UPS mailman will check your ID.)

Btw, does anyone have a "We Accept Bitcoin" sticker? It would like to give them one!
Cheers!
9  Economy / Computer hardware / CoinTerra (2TH/s) at a discounted price (Dec/Jan)! on: September 27, 2013, 02:51:36 AM
This offer is over.
I am not offering CoinTerras anymore as I don't really see it profitable enough due to low demand.
Thanks for the PMs.

Are you interested in buying CoinTerra machines?

I am planning to become a CoinTerra (de facto) reseller, I just bought more than I should've and I would like to sell some of them.
I just wanted to gauge the interest of the forum if I offered 5% off the CoinTerra machines in december, it will be reshipped to you as soon as I get them (without mining by myself). I won't even open the case.

This is not a pre-sale scam, simply because I am not demanding money upfront.
Those who's been around the forums know that I can be quite reliable.
If anyone is interested, please leave a comment detailing how many machines would you like to buy.

For those wondering why would I sell it cheaper:

I am offering the 2TH/s TerraMiners IV scheduled for December (which are currently sold out in their website) and the ones scheduled for January.
As I suggested between the lines, I had many orders. Usually in the business world, wholesale prices are lower than retail prices.
So even with the 5% discount I am not only covering the cost, but also getting some profit.

PS: Just a reminder, the retail price for TerraMiners IV (Dec) was 13,999 USD. The Retail price for Terraminer IV (Jan) is $5999.
I am offering 5% lower for one machine, from either batch. If you are interested in more rigs, I can offer a better deal.

Anyone interested, just post. I am open to listen to offers.
Thanks

Thank you for your time fellas Smiley
11  Economy / Scam Accusations / Can we just stop creating new BFL threads? on: August 28, 2013, 02:45:32 AM
YES, we all know they suck.
YES, we all know they are probably a scam.
YES, we all have suspicion that they have shills.
YES, we know that inaba and company are all scumbags.

There is no need to flood the forum with the same crap over and over, it is becoming repetitive ad nauseum.
Lets just stop creating new topics about BFL and lets post here only "new scams" out there.

Thanks.
12  Economy / Currency exchange / Exchanges accepting Dwolla on: August 27, 2013, 10:35:09 AM
I just want to throw this question here, I know only of one exchange currently accepting dwolla CampBX.
The ones I used to use before was Intersango and MtGox, both stopped as everyone probably knows already.
Does anyone here knows about bitcoin exchanges using Dwolla as their payment processor?

14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A proposal for wealthy bitcoiners out there: bitcoin for a new world on: July 20, 2013, 04:51:29 PM
Hello, I have a proposal for those wealthy and ideologists out there.
How about buying a whole town and applying everything we know from urban design, urbanism, pedagogy, cognitive sciences, permaculture, behavioral economics that addresses the core of the problems of our society.

For instance: did you know that crime rates can be moderated just by urban design? Urbanism and criminalists already addressed these methods, but we have limited opportunities to apply them and it remains largely an academical thought exercise rather than an active policy to reform the cities.

Did you know that all the laws are meaningless because it tries to impose rules by punishment alone, we've known for half a century thanks to behavioral psychology that we humans (and animals in general!) don't work that way. It is way more effective to improve people's behavior through positive reinforcement, not by punishment. The whole concept of deincentivating through punishment is a medieval idea, and we need new laws and systems that actually compensate good behavior.
It is an intriguing idea and it is a very fertile field for creative incentives, such as this proposal from VW:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iynzHWwJXaA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lXh2n0aPyw

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
How about incorruptible meritocracy and a technocracy sound?
Public funds based on the open blockchain would make embezzlement impossible.

We have the ideas, we have the knowledge, we have the scholars, we have the technology and the only thing we didn't have was a place to put them into practice.
So this is the proposal in a nutshell, why don't we make a multidisciplinary foundation for experimental policy making, think tanks AND we can also afford a town to live and test them out and to nurture a bitcoin economy as well.
A testable utopia (no place); a first step towards prototopia (the first place).
I think it is very fitting to fund experimental urbanism with experimental currencies that share the same values and idealism.

Thank you for reading.
If anyone is interested, please contact me.
I am not here to request money primarily, I can fund it myself for now.
I am more interested in inputs and brainstorming.
15  Bitcoin / Legal / Question: MtGox vs. Retroactivity of law on: May 27, 2013, 02:51:20 PM
I have a question to the lawyers of this forum:
I am wondering, wouldn't the accusations of MtGox as money transmitter considered a retroactive application of recent FinCEN guidances?
If bitcoins weren't even legally defined as money when MtGox was creating Mutum Sigillum, then by definition it wasn't illegal back then... isn't that right?
As far as I understand, ex post facto laws are unconstitutional so my question is what is the point of DHS's Seizure, do they even have a case?

What am I missing?
16  Economy / Economics / Japanese Economy Collapsing - effect on MtGox on: May 12, 2013, 12:47:23 AM
I was thinking about the effects of macroeconomics to MtGox, and its impact in bitcoins considering that it is still the only reference for its value in fiat currency.

19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Reflections about Bitcoins on: April 11, 2013, 04:26:13 PM
We know that bitcoins are the future. The functional beauty of the currency is unprecedented. It is not just a personal opinion, both professional cryptographers and economists are praising its design and observing attentively its evolution.
It is objectively much more robust than the current financial system out there, even its being considered by Western Union to process their own transactions.
The future of the bitcoins are either a metacurrency (ie, being used as a representation of the currency for transactions) or a full blown currency/commodity, depending on its behavior.
It is well designed, it is being adopted in many places and it is becoming studied by big companies.

The bitcoin currency has already experienced two bubbles, the first rallying to $30 and imploding to $2, and this one from $13~ all the way to $266.
In both bubble 'bursts' MtGox was the main responsible, and in both cases they ended up acting in the same way: lame excuses and halting all the trades artificially.

The lesson we may learn from this is that:
1st: MtGox sux big time. Again.
2nd: The robustness of the currency. I can't recall any currency or equity being able to survive two bubble bursts in a row.
3rd: Pump and Dump operations... which probably YOU've been part of it.

The 3rd point is the thing that concerns me.
Who are you listening to, and why do you act? Are you listening to investment advisors who claim to have the holy grail of (technical) analysis?
If you do, you should put your mind into red alert. If you and your fellows follow the advises from one person or a group of persons, certainly his prediction will become reality because you will make it happen by following his advice.
Just to confirm this I made an experiment by creating a group of followers, over 9000 fans following me at whatever I do. I gained the status of guru after I made predictions that were against common conventions. I wasn't predicting the future, I was creating the future at will. At the last part of the experiment I just made random predictions, which ended up resulting in correlations with my predictions. Fortunately the 9000 followers weren't big players, but if they were big it would have had a devastating power.
It isn't really that surprising, and it happens every time. Be sure who you listen to, and why you behave in such a way.

Don't follow Technical Analysts (chartists), do a Fundamental Analysis of it (how many businesses are adopting bitcoins, how is their revenue in BTC, how many partnerships are out there, how is the acceptance of bitcoins in other countries, the ability to pay taxes with bitcoins, the integration with the financial system, projects involving bitcoins in communities, markets developing, research the news, etc...).

Besides the self-fulfilling prophets, and influential "gurus", I am more concerned about the institutional players who might be playing with the market to destroy its reputation. Without credibility, the bitcoins are dead. The only thing that gives value to the bitcoins are the trust of the people in it.
These are the enemies we are trying to fight against our currency, and we CAN'T allow them to manipulate our faith in it.

Stop thinking about squeezing short term profits, you might end up killing the goose that lays the golden egg.
They want you to focus on your personal benefit instead of the benefit of the community, that's the best way of fragmenting our cause.
If you want this currency to truly compete against the financial institutions, for the sake of bitcoins and individual freedom, trust in bitcoins and nurture it by thinking in the long term.

Everytime the DDoS hits an exchange, the forum, bitcoinity, you shouldn't react on panic.
You should react enraged acting exactly in the opposite way that they expect us to react. Hold your positions, even buy higher.
It is time to wise up, people. Pay attention at the trash transactions with the volume of 0.01 BTC that are keeping the prices artificially high or low.
There are forces, big entities who will benefit with the discredit of the bitcoins, which will cause a public embarrassment which will erode the possibility of the general adoption of the currency.

Our currency is at its infancy and it has tremendous potential to leave central banks absolutely obsolete, way beyond the reach of the government's tentacles.
They want to squash us before we even begin to crawl, when we are still vulnerable.
Are you going to let them win?
Are you gonna let them manipulate YOU?
20  Economy / Economics / Virtual currencies: Virtual nation with virtual borders. Virtual customs. on: April 09, 2013, 03:32:55 PM
In line to what I posted here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=169275.0
I've thinking about the economy as a whole and the actual role of the currency.
Currencies have always represented a nation and I think that we ARE a nascent nation, albeit a virtual one, a legitimate one nevertheless.

We must remember the definition of a nation, which is different from a state.
There are stateless nations such as gypsies or even Jewish (until they usurped Palestine).
A nation is simply a group of people with same customs, culture, history, language, etc... A confederation of people.

Now related to that I think that we must have in mind the virtual borders of our current economy, which for now can be represented by every exchange that converts bitcoin to fiat currency.

We must also have in mind the potential dangers of dumping from foreign economies once we have our self-sufficient bitcoin economy.
I think we should develop anti-dumping policies, although I am troubled at imagining its enforcement.
Those are the problems we may be facing in the future and I think we should be prudent enough to debate and think from now.
