1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Why don't people under ISIS rule buy bitcoin? on: August 11, 2014, 06:21:02 PM
http://www.panture.com/bitcoin-could-financially-liberate-citizens-under-isis-rule/

I see people from Iraq and Syria on the internet, it's not like it's shut down. When terrorists come to your down asking for a tax, just show them that you have nothing. All you have to do is hide your private key, or use an online wallet like Coinbase. Using something like PayPal or Western Union can be risky, as terrorists are aware of it, and those services don't like doing business with those citizens anyways for obvious reasons.

We need to focus on educating people in third world countries more, that is where bitcoin can do the most good.

As an amateur LoL streamer on Twitch and bitcoin fanatic, this is huge!
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How Quantum Computing Will Affect Bitcoin on: June 16, 2014, 07:15:56 PM
http://www.panture.com/how-quantum-computing-will-affect-bitcoin/

TL;DR, until the core protocol is changed, it would only be safe to use a public address once, as using it more than once can lead to the discovery of your private address. Will also have major implications on password security, high frequency trading, etc. Don't worry though, prob many decades away.
4  Other / Off-topic / RIP to my friend in Iraq who used Bitcoin, passed away yesterday on: June 15, 2014, 10:00:41 PM
I'm sure many of you are aware of ISIS and the invasion that's currently occurring, and my friend was a victim. I didn't know much about him, I played League of Legends with him and talked to him in our community's teamspeak channel. I introduced him to Bitcoin a year ago, and he did his part in spreading it to locals who might be interested. I know that many people die everyday in that part of the world and nobody cares, and honestly I was part of the group that didn't care until I met him on teamspeak. He was part of the Bitcoin community, albeit in a small way, and I'm making this thread so that he lives on in some way and is not completely forgotten.
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Class action lawsuit against Google over adwords phishing site scam on: June 09, 2014, 01:33:31 AM
Taken from Reddit:

"We're scheduled to go into further discussion this Tuesday, but I'll summarize what the class action is about below.

As of this post, there remains to be a Google adwords advertisement that's shown to the public. Unfortunately, this advertisement is a cover up phishing site, which has stolen money from myself and possible others. Now, I don't know the full extent of theft that occurred as it applies to others, but I myself have lost a worthy sum due to this phishing site.

It is Google's responsibility to provide safe advertisements for the public, and this isn't the first time they've defrauded the public. In 2011, a similar situation occurred where advertisements for drugs were being sold that were not suitable for people and Google paid out 500M.

I'm aware that Google is currently facing a class action suit for its adsense program, where they allegedly stole funds from publishers a few days before their payout period. That class action shouldn't interfere with the one we plan to launch.

I've read reports right here on this subreddit of people being affected by this phishing ad, so I do believe that I'm not the only one who's been affected.

I'm planning on posting a follow up on the details of this civil action after Tuesday, when I speak with the designated attorneys. Hopefully they'll comply and go forward with this, if not I'll find people who will. I'm not giving up on this, not anytime soon."

Anyone plan on joining this if the case is taken by attorneys? If you weren't aware, there's a google ad that imitates blockchain's wallet, and when you put your info in.... well you know how phishing sites work.

I have a few questions myself:

How can anyone check how many bitcoins we lost? Couldn't someone lie about how much they lost?

How can anyone check if the person who says they got affected really did?

It's obvious that negligence occurred on Google's side, how much would a possible settlement go for?

6  Bitcoin / Pools / GHash is at 48% WTF on: June 08, 2014, 04:13:59 AM
This is fucking serious people get off GHash the consequences for 51% are huge. It could be detrimental for bitcoin going forward. Once people realize that the Achilles heel in bitcoin is real, they'll permanently mark it with a negative stigma.
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / If Bitcoin Wants Serious Investment, It NEEDS Options Trading on: May 31, 2014, 01:17:10 AM
I'm aware that not everyone is cognizant with what options trading is, so here's a simple definition from the SEC: "Options are contracts giving the purchaser the right to buy or sell a security, such as stocks, at a fixed price within a specific period of time. Stock options are traded on a number of exchanges."

Everything trades in options nowadays; gold, silver, wood, copper, cows, coal, cotton, stocks, YOU name it and it has options. Does bitcoin have options? Unfortunately the answer is no. There are many people out there who may have longterm bullish views on bitcoin, but aren't ready to take on short term volatility. If serious investors are given the chance to partake in bitcoin in a designated time period, they're more likely to do so.

So what can we do? Petition the CBOE (Worlds largest option exchange) to allow for options w/bitcoin. I know many people here aren't aware of how options work, but you must trust me on this on. It's absolutely HUGE. CBOE has nothing to lose from this, they'll just have another avenue of potential revenue.

Call their investors relations Mon-Fri and advise that they would be better off if they took on bitcoin.

Inside the US (Mon-Friday 9am-7pm) - (866) 301-8223
Outside the US(Mon-Friday) - (201) 680-6578

Lets go to Pluto people, lets get options trading for bitcoin!
8  Economy / Economics / Federal Investigation Launched into eBay's trading action attacking Carl ICahn on: May 30, 2014, 11:53:07 PM
As many know, Carl ICahn is a large shareholder in eBay. On Friday, there was a federal investigation into perceived price manipulation for eBay's stock by Carl Icahn and a few other big shareholders. Wall street Journal broke this news, more to come. http://online.wsj.com/articles/fbi-sec-probe-trading-of-carl-icahn-billy-walters-phil-mickelson-1401492772

The reason why this is being posted is that eBay (with PayPal) are direct competitors to Bitcoin. If eBay/PayPal take a bit, Bitcoin will likely take market share from it.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Are Bitcoin Transactions Included In Consumer Spending Index? on: May 30, 2014, 09:06:22 PM
Today the consumer spending numbers came out, and they were actually negative by .1%. I'm just curious if anyone knows, are bitcoins and other digital currencies included in this gauge or is it just tracking spending via US dollar?
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / PayPal could benefit greatly from providing a wallet service on: May 17, 2014, 10:55:08 PM
They could make cash from the fluctuations in Bitcoin's price, as opposed to transaction fees. This would force them to create an exchange and act as a wallet. This would not only help PayPal business wise, but it would help the people who are interested in Bitcoin get involved that aren't too sure about about digital currencies. If they don't do it, they'll be out of business from someone that will.

Exchange/Wallet combination idea comes from http://www.panture.com/why-paypal-should-integrate-a-wallet-service-for-bitcoin/

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How Bitcoin Can Improve Its PR on: May 11, 2014, 04:55:47 AM
First and foremost, it starts with forgetting the Bitcoin foundation, and any other organization that acts as a central figure for that matter. Then we need a good spokesman, someone who does a good job with being interviewed about Bitcoin, and someone who has some skin in the game. If the media gets educated, the general public will slowly learn too. Lastly, we need to de-tech Bitcoin for the average person. Tech terminology can really scare people away, as many people won't invest in something that they don't understand. The only solution to this would be more user friendly services. This goes for ATMs, wallets, security, etc. Bitcoin has to focus on its PR, it's the only way good exposure can be spread. If there's positive sentiment towards Bitcoin, people will focus on the perks and not the cons. (Association to drugs/crime)

This post describes some of the reasons why Bitcoin has a PR prob: http://www.panture.com/5-reasons-why-bitcoin-has-a-pr-problem/
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Third world countries adopting Bitcoin instead of their own fiat currencies on: April 23, 2014, 01:54:33 AM
Quote
Looking at a few of the worst fiat currencies in the world, one could examine countries like Vietnam, Somalia, or Zimbabwe. Let’s not forget the numerous African countries like Sao Tome and Principe (Some of these countries are unheard of!) amongst many other African countries.

Many countries like the ones listed above simply create currencies for the sake of it, regardless of their weak and unstable economies. These currencies grow weaker as time passes on and investors tend to shy away from even touching them.

While there’s only 2B people out of the 7B people in the world who have access to the internet, one should keep in mind that the number is gradually increasing. As internet use increases and people frequent the online world more, many will flock to virtual currencies like Bitcoin as opposed to their own national currency.

Full Article Here

What do you guys think will happen? Do you see countries with weaker currencies adopting cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin as their infrastructure grows? It could provide an advantage for a country like Zimbabwe which primarily uses the US dollar.
13  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin has not changed fundamentally, so why sell? on: April 16, 2014, 06:31:19 PM
Time and time again I see people panicking over Bitcoin and how it could crash any second and the ignorance frankly frustrates me. If you look at any bitcoin chart it'll show that Bitcoin has actually been gradually rising over time. The only reason it has been volatile lately is because it just recently got caught in the public eye. This caused a large amount of speculators to put money in and out of Bitcoin, which caused the swings we've witnessed recently. The fact of the matter remains though that Bitcoin has not fundamentally changed at all since 2009. If you bought in at ANY time before the price hike in November of 2013 then you're still up on your investment. I read some of this from the articles below if you want to see some charts/data for yourself.

14  Economy / Trading Discussion / eBay Chargebacks Hurt Bitcoin on: April 05, 2014, 07:58:09 AM
Ok if there's anything I'm experienced with it's chargebacks. I used to play MMOs and sell the virtual currencies there and I got chargebacked a few hundred dollars from non legit buyers but that was when I was a teenager and Bitcoins are much different. Chargebacks on Bitcoins would consist of at least $450 for every coin and thats just ridiculous money to not be insured.

My advice? Don't sell directly to someone and ask for PayPal when you don't have any guarantees because all they have to do is click 1 button and they get their cash back. You can call PayPal all you want and cry and moan to them but they will just tell you sorry and in the end you'll be pissed. I'd recommend using a reputable exchange instead unless PayPal gets a serious policy about virtual currencies and doesn't just join the party so they can make a few dollars from the fees. This is serious business and PayPal is treating it like its not when a dispute happens.

I hope u guys be careful when doing transactions because I've gotten chargebacked before on PayPal with virtual currencies and let me tell you the first thing thats gona happen is your heart will sink and you won't be able to eat lol. Anyways don't wanna scare any of u but please be careful because getting scammed is not fun but PayPal is easily exploitable and they won't help sellers out when they need it.

Heres some articles about chargebacks if you want a more in depth read: http://techcrunch.com/2014/04/04/ebay-now-allows-virtual-currency-sales/

15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Virtual Reality W/Bitcoin? on: April 05, 2014, 04:09:36 AM
While cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have taken over the internet the possibilities in VR are even greater. Imagine going out and buying your goods in a virtual store and having it shipped to your home. Like srsly does anyone else not see this potential? I dont know about Bitcoin being in this but ik some designated currencies would be. Anyways I got the idea about this from this article http://panture.com/virtual-reality-currency/#more-409. Good read but i think a bit too futuristic but idk always good to be hopeful
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin 5 years from now on: March 28, 2014, 10:34:54 PM
Tbh does anyone feel like bitcoin has too much competition and the world is against it? I bought bitcoin when it was 250 and sold when it hit 900 before hitting all time highs @ 1200. I kinda want to get back into the game but idk if its lost its momentum.

So much speculation is also coming from everywhere. I read negative articles that cite slow failure: http://www.panture.com/bitcoin-will-slowly-fail/

And also positive articles that make bitcoin look like its not going anywhere: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/economics-blog/2014/feb/25/bitcoin-will-survive-despite-mtgox-offline

Im worried about investing in it again, but Im willing to take a risk. With the irs calling it out though and saying its not a currency is something that really worried me though. I dont think the govt will allow the coin to take over. Does anyone else feel fear in their gut? I enjoyed being in the game but idk if now is the best time to get back

Edit: I think the article writer on Panture just wrote it to talk negatively in order to buy Bitcoin, now he's saying it will work lol http://www.panture.com/virtual-currencies-can-work/
