Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / About outdoor housing

Is there anyone have experience in setting up outdoor housing?
1. rain/snow resistant 2. dust resistant 3. good ventilation
I found it extremely difficult to fulfill all the requirement at the same time, if I cover the open frame shelf with transparent foil, then the ventilation will be so bad that the card get much warmer
I even thought about a stove like design to push the warm air out through a chimney, but then I need to vertically place the cards so that the exhaust point upwards...

I tried to undervolt it to the middle voltage setting, which is 1.063 volt, but surprisingly found out this card can still run stable at 880 Mhz, it became much cooler, and still generate 400Mh/s, total card power draw is only 137W, which brings a 2.92Mhs/J performance, really nice!

Economy / Economics / The official Greece default completed
|
on: March 09, 2012, 07:45:36 AM
|
So, after collective action clauses invoked, 95.7% of the bond holders will forced to take a 53.5% loss on the Greek bonds they hold
A natural question is, if some of those bonds are protected by CDS contracts, then who is going to take the loss instead? Investment banks? Insurance companies?
What if ECB itself issue the CDS? Could all these losses disappear?
It's a norm that if you saying that a bank is protected by saving guarantee then almost everyone will trust the bank, although they have no idea who is providing this guarantee

Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / blowfan took apart
|

After seeing the video, I decided to do it myself. It seems the most easy way to pop up the fan is to keep the fan screwed on the cooler, raise the outer side of fan wheel with screw drivers and push the other side of the fan wheel from the back of the cooler (through the long opening on the cooler base), you can apply enough power with this method without worrying about damage the fan, it will pop out with a "click" sound (first make sure it is a brush-less fan) As seen from the fan wheel part, the root of the axis are thinner than the axis, under normal operation this part is locked by the black plastic bearing well on the hub, apply force will push the axis out through that plastic bearing well. The metal axis bearing in the hub is totally sealed, oil can be contained inside for a long time, the only possible leakage is from the black plastic bearing well, which will certainly get lose every time you pop out the fan wheel. So I added some mineral oil inside the metal axis bearing house and put some bearing grease on the root of the axis, hoping that the grease will seal the black plastic bearing well In principle, such a construction will almost never need re-oil, unless the fan is always running at high speed in hot weather, thus the oil vaporized

Bitcoin / Mining support / Any way to auto-restart the machine when X crashed?
|
on: February 09, 2012, 11:09:07 AM
|
X crashed due to some hard hang in one of the GPUs, but I can still ssh into the machine and manually restart it.
Is there anyway to auto-restart the machine when this happens?
All aticonfig based detect method won't work, since aticonfig will just hang there and never return anything after X crashed
Checking process method also has trouble, since the mining process is still left intact (just became zombie)

Is there anyone experienced hardware crash due to very low temperature?
I used to put my machine on balcony and after the air temperature has dropped below 0 degree, I had encounted frequently error in one of the cards (5970). Yesterday temperature hit -18c degree and no matter how much I lower GPU frequency (600 Mhz currently), it will still crash after start cgminer for about 5 minutes
Or, it is just my 5970 runs out of juice?

Economy / Economics / Good article about FED
|
on: December 21, 2011, 08:41:06 PM
|
"Taking a look at the balance sheet of The Federal Reserve, or for that matter, any central bank, is like seeing the eighth wonder of the world. Unlike any other business enterprise, the Fed can expand its balance sheet by printing as many dollar bills as it wants. It's like creating winds merely by waving your hands . . . The Fed can't in any manner be compelled to discharge its liabilities in terms of any other tangible good or services. At best, you could receive government securities by paying back in dollars whenever the Fed is selling. Beyond this, the Fed liabilities are only as good as something written on a piece of paper. In a nutshell, paper promises beget only other kinds of paper promises. . . . All of us are connected to the Fed's balance sheet in one way or another. The currency notes that we hold are liabilities of the Fed. Likewise, a part of money lying in our checking accounts which is kept by banks in their reserve accounts gets reflected as liabilities of the Fed. Any push or pull in the Fed's balance sheet would ultimately ripple down to our lives. We just need to get a better grip for our own good." http://www.investopedia.com/articles/economics/10/understanding-the-fed-balance-sheet.asp

Economy / Economics / How come the bank failure destroy the wealth???
|
on: October 06, 2011, 02:04:54 PM
|
There is one thing always confused me: People always say that financial crisis destroyed trillions dollar worth of wealth
Based on general economy definition, only consumable goods and services are wealth, money is just a medium of exchange. So, if a house used to worth 5 million now worths 3 million, the actual wealth (the house) do not change, it is just the price of the house changed, and I think this price change are mainly caused by two things: money supply and people's desire
In my opinion, only war or natural disaster can really destroy wealth massively, any kind of financial loss is just a illusion, since people mistakenly think that money is wealth
The real question is: The country as a whole did not lose any wealth in the financial crisis, but why many people are getting poorer and the real tangible and consumable products are getting less produced?

Economy / Economics / Another interesting thing - Barter
|
on: October 04, 2011, 11:55:18 AM
|
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarterAt the end of this article: Difficulty in storing wealth: If a society relies exclusively on perishable goods, storing wealth for the future may be impractical. However, some barter economies rely on durable goods like pigs or cattle for this purposeThis is funny, seems using money to store wealth created an illusion: The goods were perishable, money is not, so money holds wealth longer. But what happens when goods are all perished and only money left?

--Chapter 1--
ABCD 4 people on an island
A hire C to capture 4kg fish each day B hire D to pick 4kg fruits each day
1kg fish or 1kg fruit equals 1 shell in the island market
C and D's salary is 2 shells
Each day, A sell 4kg captured fish for 4 shells, pay C 2 shells, and use rest 2 shells to buy 1kg fish and 1kg fruit
B sell 4kg picked fruits for 4 shells, pay D 2 shells, and use rest 2 shells to buy 1kg fish and 1kg fruit
C and D use 2 shells salary to buy 1kg fish and 1kg fruit
So, everyone consume 1kg fish and 1kg fruit per day, and they produce exactly the same amount
Total GDP per day on the island is 8 shells
Total amount of money supply required in island market is 8 shells, e.g. 8 shells are enough to facilitate all the trading day after day

Economy / Trading Discussion / A new design suggestion: Pegged exchange rate of BTC
|
on: August 03, 2011, 10:26:30 PM
|
For countries with small economy scale and small amount of currency, they ususally use a USD pegged exchange rate to avoid currency value fluctuate wildly.
So, to be stable in the early stage of BTC, it can use a pegged exchange rate to a basket of world currency and commodities, for example considering such a combination:
USD 10% EUR 10% GBP 10% CHF 10% JPY 10% Gold 10% Crude Oil 10% Copper 10% Rice 10% Cotton 10%
These combined elements will keep the overall exchange rate of BTC very stable, since most of the price movement in these elements will cancel each other

Other / Politics & Society / Is 90% jobless rate possible when robots are used everywhere?
|
on: July 31, 2011, 08:21:23 PM
|
If the technology has evolved to such a level that robots took over most of the human jobs in 2050, will most of the human become jobless and only those working for robot companies have a job? Obviously this day is approaching, the using of computer and software has eliminated countless jobs today, and will continue to do so in a much faster rate, due to the whole IT industry is getting more mature and efficient I think this has much to do with most of the problems we are having today: High jobless rate, lower social wellfare, government debt, etc... We definitely need a new finance/economy model which can cope with a computer/automation based society To be more abstract: How can we deal with the fast increase in productivity but slow and uneven increase in income/demand? Anyone interested, welcome to give your thoughts!

Economy / Economics / Something has to be wasted
|
on: July 26, 2011, 06:58:28 PM
|
I think I found a match of this two model!
In a deflation economy like bitcoin world, people waste lots of energies to produce the currency (thinking about how much electricity/computation power are wasted in the meaningless hash calculation to generate those coins)
In a inflation economy like the world we are living in, people waste lots of energies to produce the goods and service that no one is interested in(think about those projects never get any return, those business never get any customer, they are purely driven by enthusiasm)
So, something has to be wasted anyway, as long as there is a chanel for exhaust energies, the economy has some motivation to going forward

Economy / Trading Discussion / Where to buy bitcoin using my local currency?
|
on: July 25, 2011, 08:07:36 PM
|
I'm not living in USA, sometimes I sell goods to international customer and say that they can also pay bitcoin with much more easy steps, but there is no simple way for them to buy bitcoin
I think there should be one exchange for each different currency (with very low transaction fee), this will greatly increase the acceptance of bitcoin as a payment method
Seems we need market maker who have deep bitcoin/local currency reserve to play this role

Other / Beginners & Help / What's the best possible cooling solution for home mining?
|
on: July 23, 2011, 08:44:12 PM

I just tried yesterday on one of the 5870 cards to use a simple GPU block to water cool the GPU and use RAM sinks and a big low rpm fan to cool the VRM
But there are problems: After one hour, the radiator of the water cooling device start to get hot, and GPU temp rise from 40 degree to 53 degree, means the water temp at least rised by 13 degree.
This is only one GPU, if 2-3 GPU burns at the same time, I'm afraid the radiator will not be cool enough to keep the GPU temp down. Another problem is the VRM temps got really high (80+) and are at least 20 degree higher than the stock fan cooler, seems the only way to cool the VRM correct is to install a customized VRM sink like those from vf3000a
After this experiment, I simply installed back the stock cooler and try to tolerate the noise instead. I think the best way is to put the whole machine in the balcony (less than 25 degree most of the time, minus 10 during winter), but that will put lots of requirement on the casing design
Is there any one using watercooling here, how many cards a watercooling device can handle? Any other solutions which works better?

As I understand, linux will be the better choice, gives better h/s. With windows xp, I have to make dummy DVI plugs and using VNC might not always be fast
But when it comes to OC, fan control, temp monitoring etc, I don't know how much function linux can provide? And Guiminer is really easy to use and switch between different profiles
Any recommendations?
