Today Death Toll In Karachi Bus Shooting Rises To 44 death and 13 injured
"At least 44 people have been killed and 13 others injured when some unknown gunmen attacked a passsenger bus near Safoora Chowrangi in Karachi, Dunya News reported.
Reportedly, sixteen women were among the dead.
"Six terrorists came on three motorcycles, they entered the bus and began firing indiscriminately. They used 9mm pistols and all those killed and injured were hit by the 9mm pistols,"

Islamabad, Pakistan - A Pakistani military helicopter carrying foreign diplomats in the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan has crashed, killing at least seven people, the military said. The dead included two pilots, a crew member, Norwegian Ambassador Leif Larsen, Philippines Ambassador Domingo Lucenario Jr and the wives of the Malaysian and Indonesian ambassadors to Pakistan. The Pakistani Foreign Office released a statement confirming the deaths, also identifying the wife of the Malaysian ambassador as Datin Habibah Mahmud. Dutch Ambassador Marcel de Vink, Malaysian Ambassador Hasrul Sani Mujtabar and their Polish counterpart Andrzej Ananicz were injured in the crash. The pilots were identified as Major Altamash and Major Faisal, while the crew member was named Zakir. In a press conference on Friday evening, Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said the crash was due to "engine failure", and ruled out any possibility of the helicopter being shot down. He also expressed his grief at the accident, and extended his condolences to the families of the victims. Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif and Pakistani Advisor on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz both earlier did the same, in statements from their offices. 'Technical fault' The MI-17 helicopter was carrying 17 people, including 11 foreigners and six Pakistanis, the military's spokesperson Major-General Asim Bajwa said in an earlier statement. The 10 survivors had "varying degrees of injuries". The injured are being treated at the Combined Military Hospital at Jutial, about 30km away from the area in which the crash occurred. The aircraft crashed in the Naltar Valley area of Gilgit-Baltistan, about 300km north of the capital Islamabad. The crash was due to a "technical fault" while the helicopter was landing, Bajwa said. Gilgit-Baltistan is located in Pakistan's extreme north, and is at the junction of three major mountain ranges: the Himalayas, the Karakorum and the Hindu Kush. It is home to more than 100 peaks higher than 7,000 metres. It is also part of the disputed region of Kashmir. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was due to visit Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday, which the diplomats were visiting as part of a four-day tour. Sharif was en route to Gilgit when the crash occurred, and has now cancelled his visit, state media reported. He expressed "deep grief and sorrow" over the crash, according to Radio Pakistan. The helicopter that crashed was part of a group of three, all of which were carrying foreign diplomats on their tour of the area. |

KARACHI: When it comes to Pakistan-India relations, it’s not just the territorial disputes that refuse to fade away even after 67 years of the Partition.
According to the first annual report of the SBP for 1948-49, the two governments mutually agreed to end the RBI’s status of the common monetary authority from July 1, 1948, as Pakistan became “exposed to grave dangers” without the right to control its currency and banking. The division of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) post-1947 remains incomplete to this day. According to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), India still owes it a little over Rs5.6 billion – mainly on account of assets held with the RBI “pending transfer to Pakistan”. In other words, the country’s central monetary authority believes India has yet to cough up money equivalent to the present-day value of the assets that RBI had refused to surrender to the government of Pakistan, although the latter was entitled to receive them post-Partition. From the first-ever Statement of Affairs that the SBP issued on its second day of existence – July 2, 1948 – to the latest one released on June 27, 2014, the central bank has listed the unsettled claims on the RBI among its “assets” unfailingly for the last 66 years. The SBP’s issue department – which deals with currency and the assets that underlie it – shows the outstanding claims on the RBI under two distinct categories of assets. The bigger chunk, comprising gold coins worth Rs4.1 billion, sterling securities amounting to Rs501.6 million, government of India securities worth Rs240.4 million and Rs4.9 million of rupee coins, appears as assets held with the RBI pending transfer to Pakistan. The smaller chunk consists of “India notes representing assets receivable from the RBI”. While the first set of so-called assets is self-explanatory, the second claim on the RBI needs detailed explanation. As per the agreement between political leaderships of the two sides, the RBI was to remain the central monetary authority for both India and Pakistan post-Partition, with Indian notes to stay on as legal tender in Pakistan until September 30, 1948. As for the Indian notes and coins present in currency chests in Pakistan on June 30, 1948, and the ones encashed during the next fiscal year, Pakistan was supposed to return these to the RBI. Subsequently, the SBP was to claim equivalent assets against these Indian notes and coins from the Reserve Bank of India.
