21  Other / Meta / Speculation Forum - I suggest a split... on: January 30, 2014, 04:08:03 PM
As a speculation Forum resident I would like to make a request on behalf of everybody.

I think it would be prudent to make a Technical Analysis subforum other than speculation. Some place where chartists can post their ideas under strict rules and no deviation from them.
It has become increasingly difficult to do this because of the constant Bull/Bear trolling, in which I admittedly engaged in in the past as well. But it is becoming old and I would think it would improve the quality of discussion both for people into the theoretical side of trading and people who like do discuss current event in relation to the price of Bitcoins.

If you like the Idea please post suggestions on the rules of these proposed subforums and what they should be called.
Perhaps just "Speculation" and "Technical Analysis"
or "Price Discussion" and "Trading strategies"
or something else...
22  Economy / Speculation / China: Worst case scenario. on: January 04, 2014, 09:19:20 PM
Here is what might happen with China, their goverment and the implications on Bitcoins longterm survivability:

On Jan. 31st BTCChina has the withdraw deadline for money on the exchange, and there are signs that they are trying to circumvent that using Voucher auctions.
They officials are probably right now keeping a close eye on the companies exchanges and if they take the actions required of them. So far none of them seem to take it serious enough and they seem to go double down.
The Govt will then probably not only close any other accounts associated (like this Hunobi CEOs private bank account) but also seize the assets.
Next on the list are Bitcoin payment processors, like Bitpay, which given recent statement are a prime candidate for not only a forbidden business but also the great firewall. E-commerce using Bitcoin becomes next to impossible in China at this point.

This then sets the precedent for much more goverment intervention into Bitcoin, and once the chair-poopers get wind of how interconnected the Bitcoin infrastructure really is, how easy it is to set up a money laundering operation mining Bitcoins commercail Bitcoin miners are next, as well as ASIC producers.
The winners of this venture will be companies like BFL which based in the USA are out of reach from China, but given their attitude and past history they might decide to just run with the money gained from their quasi monopoly.
And after a fraud of this magnitude nobody will touch Bitcoin again with a long stick, even in the US.
But also without some chain reaction of this sort Chinese legislation is taken not nearly serious enough. The risk associated with Chinese exchanges trying to operate in this kind of legal gray area is tremendous.

The point is, it is a reckless gamble made because of the greed and pride of the exchange operators on behalf of every other Bitcoiner.

24  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Mining Bitcoins should be renamed to burying. on: October 31, 2013, 02:03:08 AM
Basically it goes like this: Mining coal gets something out of the ground that can be turned into electricity.

Generating Bitcoins wastes electricity consuming coal. That coal is then buried inside the blockchain (It's not but the carbon dioxide which was released in the process is there.)
Buring is the opposite of digging, or if you will you have to dig something out first (earth or coal) in order to bury.

So I propose mining should be renamed, or stopped being used to describe generating Bitcoins.
thanks for your attention

25  Economy / Speculation / Bearish Scenario on: October 07, 2013, 01:04:42 PM
No TA

With Silk Road down Bitcoin now has now no practical use. Buying stuff over Bitpay has no practical advantage over other methods and it's volume is negligible if you exclude ASIC sales.
Bitcoin is now 99% concerned with itself, that is either mining or investing, any sensible individual gonna look for a exit in the following months. Then you true believers will be finally on your own.
It's now a pure financial bubble.

Have fun!
26  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / I'm sad to say it but the Litecoin pipedream is over. on: September 22, 2013, 10:38:17 AM
Atlantis gone for good means it's just another Bitcoin clone now, it had real potential for a while but what remains isn't worth the fuss.
The infamous mtgox adoption (which I still think was a april fools joke) becomes less and less relevant as gox is limping towards it's gave. There is a slim chance that they might get back into the land of the living again and continue with their plans. But that's doesn't justify a price of over $2 USD, or even above a Dollar.
27  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / NSA security backdoors make Bitcoin nearly worthless! on: September 15, 2013, 06:58:53 PM
The NSA has introduced flaws into cryptographic algorithms, the same ones used by bitcoins. They can attack any wallet in the world and generate their own private key for it, allowing them to transfer the money at will (this includes paper wallets). If you become a threat to them they will help any other agency seize your money. They are undoubtedly also tracking coins on the blockchain so any transfers you make will also be associated and revoked (even if you transferred the money to someone else). The best part is that since bitcoin is anonymous, you can't claim it's your money and have no paper trail so no court will believe you.

29  Economy / Service Discussion / Bailout for mtgox? on: September 01, 2013, 04:35:35 PM
What would happen if mtgox were to call for a bail out from it's depositors? How likely would that happen and what would be the resulting consequences?
Not much, I think, the zealots will blame the FEDs and Mark.K will get a get out of jail free card by the community.

Mtgox is after all - too big to fail!
30  Other / Meta / Can we have the ads a little less annoying? on: August 04, 2013, 08:07:52 PM
I find ads after the first post annoying, so I took the opt-out choice and disabled them. I might be interested in some of what they are offering but not this way.
They are distracting me from the discussion, and aren't appealing to the eye. After I've seen them a couple of times they really start bugging me.

For example why not display a small banner at the bottom of the page, this way I can look at them if I want to during the discussion and am not forced into looking at them they way it currently works.
I would choose to display them if they were in that spot.
31  Economy / Speculation / 110 is the new 135 on: August 01, 2013, 07:51:45 PM
As of a lack of X is the new Y threads, I give you.

I don't see any particular reason of why the bear market should end, There is still profit taking to be done people.
See you below 50.

33  Economy / Speculation / It's crunch time Bulls. on: July 01, 2013, 05:56:09 PM
Now is the chance to turn this around.

Or should I say?

34  Economy / Speculation / When will mtgox be under 50% trading volume? on: May 21, 2013, 11:12:49 PM
Mtgox is slowly loosing market share, in the last 24 hours.

according to https://bitcoinity.org/markets/list?currency=ALL&span=24h
This day it had 62% of the trading volume in the last 3 days 65%, in the last week 75%,in the last month 76% and the last 6 months 77%.

Do you think mtgox will loose majority even without a further catalyst or will it just get there on it's own?
35  Other / Meta / theymos: I don't recognize Ripple IOUs as binding agreements. on: May 21, 2013, 06:50:26 PM
I don't recognize Ripple IOUs as binding agreements.

I don't know if you guys are following the TradeFortress vs Ripple drama, but as it turned out it raises the issue of how to threat ripple IOUs in the future.
Now theymos made the above statement, which I must say I have a problem with.

It is self contradictory to use ripple and at the same time not recognize IOUs as a form of contract. I would like to have a detailed explanation of how and why anybody thinks Ripple IOUs do not represent a binding agreement.
Was that just for the case of TFs "game" or in general? Should ripple users post a new forum thread "validating" their thrust relationship each time they enter into one?

I also see a potential conflict of interest since TF payed for advertising the ripplescam.org site on the Forum, and theymos taking partisan.
36  Economy / Speculation / Effects of the alt-coin hype on Bitcoin on: May 11, 2013, 11:04:27 PM
I think everybody has now noticed it, we are now at a rate where a new Bitcoin fork comes out every day. Almost all of them seem to include no improvements or tweaks.

Obviously most of them have a short time of hype and then decay into irrelevance quickly.
However during the last period of hype one coin, Litecoin turned out to stand the test of time and gain significant valuation during the past weeks.

Will there be another successful coin come out of this or is it just all a quick pump&dump? At which point would an increasing number of successful alt-coin eat into Bitcoins share?
What do you think?
37  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin is not digital Gold, it is digital Rhodium on: April 27, 2013, 07:35:33 PM
Like Bitcoins rhodium exhibits three properties:

It is very rare, (much) rarer than Gold
It is somewhat of a fringe investment
It is subject to hypes

And most importantly it is one of the few actual assets which exhibit wild price swings.

I find it very interesting how chaotic those are, so if you think to know what bitcoin will do next over any longer period of time: Think again Wink
38  Economy / Speculation / Bulls, bears, pigs and chickens on: April 25, 2013, 12:25:00 PM
You probably heard the sentence: Bulls make money, bears make money but pigs get slaughtered.

A pig investor is somebody who only buys during a rally and does sell too late to realize his profits because he want to have even more profits.
A chicken investor is somebody who avoids getting in all together and waits for cheaper prices, forever.

Meanwhile the bulls have bought long before the pigs got in and the bears close their short long before the chickens have a chance.
Most of the self-proclaimed bulls here are in fact pigs and most of the self-proclaimed bears here are in fact chickens. Most newbies here are either pigs or chickens.
39  Economy / Speculation / A brief history of exponential trends on: April 20, 2013, 01:40:46 PM
I like how the bulls use to draw their cute charts of how Bitcoin is going up, uP and UP on a logarithmic chart.

The cute thing about it is that once they are posted that historically means they are going to be broken below that point. I've made this small collection to demonstrate.

From top to bottom these are past exponential trends and how they got broken on the chart below it.
So we have got a new exponential trendline again will it be broken?

Take a guess....  Wink
40  Economy / Speculation / Looks like a short squeeze. on: April 18, 2013, 11:29:34 PM
