My tale of woe:

I lost all my bitcoin due to complications with crones disease while in India.
2  Economy / Scam Accusations / Feeling like a 'tard - scammed by a malicious app on: June 16, 2016, 01:27:02 PM
Didn't do proper due-diligence, made assumptions, and lost an annoying amount of BTC.

Installed what I thought was the legitimate android app for localbitcoins, lbcbit, turns out it just empties the wallet. :/

It should be removed from the play store soon, but in the mean time, yeah, don't make the mistake I did!

The 3rd in a couple of months and it's getting to be a right pain in the ass as it takes a week to re-scan everything!

How do I configure the core to survive this sort of thing?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26155157

Bitstamp - one of the world's largest Bitcoin exchanges - has halted withdrawals after coming under cyber-attack.

The Slovenia-based firm said the culprits had exploited a bug in the virtual currency's underlying software to carry out the assault.

It is the second exchange to suspend operations. Tokyo's MtGox took a similar measure on Friday.

...tech issues continue
What the bloody hell are they talking about???

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26118002

Bitcoin's value has dropped sharply after one of the largest trading exchanges said there was a flaw in the virtual currency's underlying software.

MtGox said it had halted transfers to external Bitcoin addresses on Friday after detecting "unusual activity".

It said an investigation had revealed it was possible for thieves to fool the transaction process so that double the correct amount of bitcoins would be sent.

Bitcoins fell from $700 (£427) to $540.

...And promptly returned to $670.

Errr... what!?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26083733

Every Icelandic citizen is to be given the chance to get a handful of virtual coins on 24 March.

The idea to distribute millions of the digital coins to all of Iceland's 333,000 citizens has been dreamt up by entrepreneur Baldur Odinsson.

Mr Odinsson's company is now creating, or "mining", the millions of Auroracoins needed for the giveaway.

He hopes that distributing the virtual cash to everyone will help to restore some value to the Icelandic krona.

11  Bitcoin / Press / [2014-02-04] BBC.co.uk - Silk Road 'mastermind' Ross William Ulbricht charged on: February 05, 2014, 03:00:33 AM
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-26037129

The US has charged a California man alleged to be the owner of Silk Road, a black-market website that brokered $1bn (£613m) in transactions.

Ross William Ulbricht, 29, is accused of drug trafficking, computer hacking and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege he deliberately operated the site as a criminal enterprise and solicited six murders-for-hire.

Mr Ulbricht's lawyer says his client will plead not guilty to all charges.

"The indictment was expected and does not contain any new factual allegations," Joshua Dratel said in a statement. "We look forward to preparing Ross' defence."

Authorities say Mr Ulbricht operated the Silk Road site under the name Dread Pirate Roberts, an apparent reference to the movie The Princess Bride. Purchases were made using the virtual currency Bitcoin.

He was arrested last year as the site was shut down by the FBI. Officials seized 173,991 Bitcoins ($150m) as part of the investigation.

Mr Ulbricht has filed a claim contesting the seizure of the Bitcoins, asserting that they were found on his personal computer and belong to him rather than Silk Road.

He is also accused of conspiring to have a former Silk Road employee murdered during the course of a federal sting operation.

That murder-for-hire, along with the others, was never carried out.

Silk Road allowed visitors to browse nearly 13,000 listings, many of them for illegal drugs, but also offered forged documents, computer hacking services and pirated media content, prosecutors said.

Quote
New York's Department of Financial Services is to start two days of hearings on the virtual currency, Bitcoin, on Tuesday.
This comes just a day after authorities charged two men in connection with money laundering using, Bitcoin exchanges.
The hearings are more fact-finding in nature, but if New York clears the way for Bitcoin to enter more widespread use, it could be a game-changing moment for digital currencies.
Samira Hussain reports from New York.
