Made PyBitmessage to work in Ubuntu Lucid several months ago. At first I used pythonbrew to install python 2.7, but at that time it can install only up to version 2.7.2, which isn't compatible with the client. So I ended up using just virtualenv to set up python 2.7.3. Also had to install PyQt and its dependencies by hand.

I am experimenting with Bitmessage, a bitcoin-like messaging system https://bitmessage.org/. If anybody is interested in trying it out too, you can send a message to me at BM-or73ye64QJTQzzRVVUHympbqvhpPcZu2h

I buy bitcoins partly as part of a scheme to provide alternatives to established payment and money transfer systems. To do that, I run a small exchange service and provide some liquidity to local bitcoin users.
The economy of my country is supported in a large part by remittances from overseas foreign workers, and it is in this area that bitcoin has a most obvious utility. However, I see that some local freelancers are now taking btc for payment, and I'm glad that I get to exchange their btc to pesos.
It is my hope that more local freelancers, most especially artisans, take advantage of btc as a payment method. This could also make the value of bitcoin appreciate.

Thanks to the devs for the fixes. My bash script for making off-line transactions is working again. When electrum reached a certain previous version, 'electrum -w wallet mktx... > tx' stopped redirecting its output to a file if executed within my bash script. I should have reported that earlier, but I hope it stays fixed in future updates. Sent a donation.

Mang Sweeney's services are back this year. Please note that there is now an additional fixed-rate fee of [EDITED]0.1 BTC for remittances; there's NO additional fee when you're only selling btc.

The transfer service and my buying of bitcoins will be closed for now while I look for new source of funds and hedging method. I was affected by the closing of Cryptoxchange which is the main exchange of my lending partner. The service may possibly be back next year. Sorry for this.
However, I still continue selling bitcoins locally.

Mang Sweeney, yung mga nabili/nagbebenta sa inyo ng bitcoins, saan nila madalas ginagamit/nakukuha yung bitcoins nila? Hindi ko sila tinatanong. Ako, madalas kong gamit ang bitcoin bilang store of value. So far, mas malaking di hamak kaysa investments ko sa piso ang tinutubo ng bitcoins tuwing kailangan kong mag-cash out. Ito'y mula nitong July hanggang ngayon ($9 to $12).

Hi hashkey. Welcome to the wild, wild world of Bitcoin!

Btw what happens when bitcoind receives a new block in the middle of armory's scanning at startup?
Nothing. Armory will continue scanning the blkxxxx.dat files as they were before the new block was received, and Armory will still consider the end of the previous block to be the end of the file. Once Armory is done scanning, it will find the new block on the first "heartbeat" (every 1s) and update itself accordingly. In the past hour or so, I've been trying to pin down the bug I mentioned previously, opening and closing armory in between deaths (5-10 minutes interval) in Kingdom Rush game. I've observed conclusively that armory does not update itself afterwards when a new block is received by bitcoind in the middle of the scan at startup.

Installed 0.84 on Ubuntu 10.04 desktop. So far, the bug that sometimes made the wallet not update (block count not changing) when maybe switching workspaces in Gnome or restoring from minimized state has not appeared yet. I could not always reproduce that bug in 0.82.2, so I can't say precisely what was causing it.
The bug is still there, and it has nothing to do with switching workspaces or minimized state. This time, I have not done anything with armory yet, just leaving it open while I do other things on my desktop. Btw what happens when bitcoind receives a new block in the middle of armory's scanning at startup?

I want to give some bitcoins to someones as a gift, but he does not know yet about bitcoins. how can I do it?
Try coinapult.com From their FAQ: Does the recipient need a Bitcoin account? No, the recipient only needs an email address or mobile phone number. If the recipient wishes to claim their new Bitcoins, they'll need a Bitcoin address to send them to, but this can be done by them at any point. Launch a Bitcoin over to your grandmother and see what happens!

Anyway Sweeney; are you really charging enough? You got what 2-500 pesos (12$) tops out of our 12K pesos trade? I appreciate it of course, but I think you need to raise your fee by ~1 percent point and use that money to expand and advertise BTC usage/your service - which could be a huge boon to your country/you. Honestly your fee was so low I thought you might run with the money instead of continuing the service I've been thinking about raising my fee or spread for some time now. Your nudge helps :-)

If you want our friend to get 12500 pesos, you will need to send bitcoins worth 12907.20 pesos*. At my current rate of 504.73 pesos/BTC, that's 25.572 BTC.
* (0.97 x total) - 20 = 12500
I'm surprised you'd pay more with SmartMoney (407.20 pesos) than MLhuillier, where you can send tha same amount for a service charge of only 225 pesos.
