Equipped with an in-depth understanding of token economics and blockchain products, she works to help the world better understand the value of blockchain. Interviewer: Chloe@ weixin.qq (WeChat) Future Finance
NULS is a global open source and community-driven blockchain project, which is a highly customizable blockchain infrastructure. It consists of microkernel and functional modules. NULS formulates a set of industrial blockchain technology standards, which follow the principles of hot plugging, modularization and parallel extension, and provide functional modules such as replaceable smart contracts, multi-chain parallel, consensus mechanisms, P2P network, storage, encryption, multi-level accounts, etc.
Recently NULS released the NULS 2.0 Alpha version — PanGu v1.0, which is based on the micro-service architecture. We c onducted an in-depth interview with Liesa, NULS core team CEO. We hope this interview helps investors who are curious about NULS to gain a comprehensive understanding of the project.
1. Why does NULS2.0 choose micro-service architecture?
Liesa Huang:
To begin with, simplicity has been the NULS vision since it was founded in early 2017. We have always been committed to making the blockchain easier, so from the beginning our architectural approach has always been modular, because modularity is by far the simplest solution for chain-building. However, the modular NULS 1.0 version still adopts a monolithic architecture.
Those who have maintained a large software system using a monolithic architecture know that when adding a new business function to the system, you must download every module’s code from the repository, deploy it in the IDE, and then develop and test it. Even though there exists part of the code you need in an implemented module, there is no way to call it directly. You have to make a copy, and then modify the copy to realize the new business functionality. This adds a huge complexity to chain-building. Micro-service architecture, on the other hand, allows the ability to split the complex large-scale software system into different layers of modules according to business functionality. Each module can be independently deployed and serves the external systems.
Simply speaking, micro-service is a way of implementing the architecture by building the bottom layer to take service as a unit. This underlying idea for better service coincides with our consistent idea of making blockchain easier. Therefore, we choose to upgrade the network and apply the micro-service feature to NULS 2.0.
2. How is one-click chain-building made possible with NULS? What are the features?
Liesa Huang:
The Chain Factory is a product that NULS will launch this year that manufactures chains like an assembly line in a factory. It will be implemented using the NULS module repository where anyone can grab the modules they need for the features they want their chain to have, and the Chain Factory does all of the assembling for them. It is a standardized “one-click customized chain-building tool”, to provide developers with the easiest, fastest, zero-threshold chain-building experience possible.
The Module Repository is jointly developed and maintained by the NULS core team and technical community to provide any basic blockchain module such as network, consensus, account, etc. Any developer can participate in the development of any module by sharing their code contributions to the repository. After passing a review, the module may be included in the module repository for public use. With the continuous improvement of the module repository, it will grow to contain an array of general and business modules, and will become a basic development library applicable to different industries, providing complete blockchain solutions for any enterprise.
The Chain Factory itself is a blockchain whose nodes can run multiple chains at the same time. In this way, the blockchains built using the Chain Factory can run directly on the nodes of the Chain Factory, which saves the trouble of setting up the operation environment of nodes, and greatly reduces the time and cost of development.
Chain-building can be realized through Chain Factory with only four simple steps:
Select the required modules from the Module Repository of the Chain Factory; Configure the basic system parameters and fill in the information for the genesis block; Apply the main purpose of the chain to select it’s consensus method, and whether to run it directly on the nodes of the Chain Factory; Pay a deposit and broadcast a chain-building transaction. After the confirmation of the transaction, the new chain will be built instantly. Through the user-friendly interface provided by the Chain Factory, enterprises and developers only need to go through a simple configuration to build a chain with ease and efficiency, leading to significant savings of both time and cost. When adding new modules while using the Chain Factory’s nodes to run your blockchain, the node will automatically determine whether a module you selected already exists. If not, it will be downloaded from the Module Repository and run automatically. You can also choose to set up your own nodes to run your blockchain.
3. What are the highlights of the NULS cross-chain solution?
Liesa Huang:
The cross-chain solution is based on the main network, whereby all blockchains only communicate with the NULS main network. The verification of the transaction is performed by the NULS main network and each parallel chain trusts the verification results. Every blockchain developed on NULS can directly select the cross-chain module and integrate it into the system to realize cross-chain functionality. The cross-chain module implements the NULS cross-chain protocol, which can easily communicate with the main network, and then transfer assets to other parallel chains through the NULS main network. For Ethereum, Bitcoin and other public chains, NULS provides a common protocol conversion layer to enable them to communicate with the blockchains in the NULS ecosystem. The protocol conversion layer can communicate with public chains such as Ethereum and the NULS main network chain as well, to realize intercommunication with other parallel chains in NULS ecosystem in an more indirect way. The NULS cross-chain consensus is mainly achieved through SDK and protocol, which provides a very simple and fast cross-chain capability.
4. Why does the blockchain industry need NULS 2.0? What innovative breakthroughs will it bring to the industry?
Liesa Huang:
The most prominent feature of the NULS 2.0 is the integration of micro-service into the underlying design of blockchain. As mentioned before, the overriding value of micro-service thinking is business orientation. Blockchain technology is evolving to the point where the very real demand is the application. In the Internet era, the product manager plays a proverbially leading role in a project. The technology cannot be the only focus of the blockchain to enter the era of blockchain products. Therefore, NULS 2.0’s technical concept specializes in the product thinking and product concept, which provides the greatest level of business separation with the strongest level of technical support for future blockchain product managers. This is a fairly new kind of underlying design concept in blockchain technology.
5. NULS 2.0 is a project that encourages deep participation by the technical community. Why does the NULS core team favor a technical community to guide the NULS network? What are the difficulties and benefits of doing so?
Liesa Huang:
We humbly believe that even the strongest team has weaknesses. One of the great gifts that the blockchain offers to the business world is community cooperation and decentralization. Although immature, it is worth exploring and developing. The community is deeply rooted in the NULS project, and we have accumulated many excellent technical community programmers from all over the world who are also eager to join us in the bottom layer of development.
The technical community joining the core team to do the underlying design and development is a great way to utilize the best assets of a team and build a community of contributors. It also attracts more possibilities for the future technical development of NULS. So, in spite of the many difficulties of language, time zone, and cultural differences, we push through the wild working hours, and enduring work habits because the global technical development of NULS is a major principle we adhere to and prioritize. Our strong work standards and resolute habits will affect others in the collaborative process as we standardize the design and development of NULS.
6. What is the layout of the global business cooperation after the release of the NULS2.0 Alpha version — PanGu v1.0?
Liesa Huang:
NULS has business teams in the Greater Bay Area of Silicon Valley and South Korea. Many of the first test users of PanGu v1.0 are from the Greater Bay Area and South Korea. NULS 2.0 is targeted at blockchain developers and enterprises. So we will start from the broader technical community coverage and enterprise communication to embrace the global users with a need to build a chain, and will timely optimize our products based on their feedback.
7. Recently (on March 27) BlockGroup, the parent company of BlockVC, established a $200 million acquisition fund and strategically invested in NULS. What do you think they suppose is the greatest value of NULS?
Liesa Huang:
As mentioned in the BlockGroup announcement, the blockchain industry still lacks a fully-fledged infrastructure development suite of underlying frameworks and modules, as well as any technical standards. NULS greatly helps shorten the development cycle of blockchain and lowers the technical threshold, which is what the BlockGroup values most about NULS. They were impressed by the agility that micro-service lends to blockchain. The scope of application goes far beyond the public chain, its also applicable to consortium and private chains, and is suitable to businesses of any size.
The principles that the NULS core team adheres to, such as technical community development, and being fully devoted to applying the strength of the technical community by integrating its strongest members into the underlying core development process, means that a good framework of community autonomy will flourish through exploration of the core features, and advance the governance model of NULS. These principles are highly consistent with BlockGroup’s concept of the blockchain.
The blockchain is still in its infancy and the combination of blockchain development with global technical community development creates a fusion of human capital and decentralized projects that can provide a powerful push forward for the the whole industry.
8. How can NULS still focus on the technical update, iteration and breakthrough in such a market?
Liesa Huang:
Actually, the NULS team didn’t really pay much attention to the secondary market. We’ve been involved in our mission and goals since 2017. This may sound hollow, but it is true. Whether code submission of NULS 1.0 in Github or a redesign of it into the NULS 2.0’s micro-services layer, the way our technology product team works is completely immersive, because its the only way to be exceptionally focused and to succeed. You can see this in the Github repositories of NULS core and the technical community, the amount of code produced by the team rivals even the biggest projects. We all know that our technical product team is not large, but the modular architecture we intend to do based on the micro-service is extremely advanced. This will allow the global technical community to be fully involved in the underlying development, and it may take some time, especially for Chinese programmers. So we have to focus, and stay immersed, to be fully involved so that in this way we can accomplish what we want to achieve.
9. Many investors said NULS 2.0 will be one of the most promising projects in the next one or two years. How does the NULS team regard it?
Liesa Huang:
First of all, thank you for the recognition and love for NULS. The NULS core team has great ambitions for the future. In terms of market cap (which is often a common concern for investors), we hope to be rising through the top 20 of CMC’s global market cap list soon enough. I’d like to analyze our goal from several dimensions:
Technology. We all know that there are many solutions for the bottom layer of the blockchain. The module infrastructure of the NULS 2.0 micro-service supports the chain-building, multi-chain and cross-chain products. In fact, we have seen similar architectures in Baidu, JD and other enterprise-level solutions. This also indicates that NULS will probably be one of the most popular and user-friendly schemes of blockchain product. Community governance. I think that the community governance aspect of blockchain adds a special charm to business models throughout the past 20 years. The project that can regenerate its own core developers and other technical and community members as they phase in and out during its lifetime of autonomy is a truly valuable and secure blockchain project. NULS has emphasized a lot on community construction since its establishment. We still have the continuous optimization and improvement of our community governance model to polish. The establishment of the Community Constitution, Board of Directors, Ambassadors, as well as our global technical community, allows engagement at every step of development to direct and secure the future of the NULS project. Once we complete the development of the NULS community governance model and make on-chain governance completely feasible, the 20 million in our community fund will work to further ensure the future sustainable development of the NULS community.
Global outreach. Those who are familiar with NULS know that we are a global operation, and so I travel to the United States, and South Korea, from China all year round. One of the biggest values of blockchain lies in globalization. Both the circulation of globalization and the integration of global communities reflect the business value of the whole industry very well. So we will stick to our global strategy. The first batch of NULS 2.0 Alpha enterprise users are from the United States, South Korea and Europe. This year, we will increase cooperation with even more international partners.
Value circulation. The general consensus is that a blockchain’s token realizes its value via circulation, so circulation is a closely-watched metric. NULS is also a financial product listed on an exchange with the largest international circulation and trading volume (Binance). Therefore, it is also one of our goals to focus on value circulation and make the NULS token intrinsic value reflected in the circulation. These four points are the core team’s opinions on the value of NULS. As mentioned before, our current goal is to enter the top 20 in terms of market cap. Of course, market cap is a very important indicator in the long run, so it is somewhat meaningless to keep a close eye on the short-term fluctuations.
If you ask me, the innovation, change and influence that NULS can bring to the blockchain world is of great value in itself, and is also one of most prominent and frequently occurring reminders the team gives ourselves, which we call the ultimate problem we are forced to face. So we have no choice but to realize through achievement the way we want to advance a blockchain-driven world.
Finally, thanks again for your recognition and attention. The best reward for us all is the encouragement of each other in this endeavor.

Initialized on September 27, 2017, NULS is a global open-source and community-driven project whose main network was launched in July 2018. Since its establishment, NULS has maintained its commitment to making the blockchain easy and simple. To facilitate this, NULS has adopted a modular approach with version NULS1.0, to include a chain-building process alongside a multi-chain and cross-chain ecosystem.
Regarding the modularity of NULS 1.0, there was still room for improvement. In order to further loosen the coupling between modules and lay a solid foundation for chain-building and cross-chain, NULS core team and NULS CCC (NULS Code Craft Council) members creatively combined the micro-service architecture with the blockchain to design a brand new NULS 2.0 architecture.
1. NULS 2.0 Modular Chain-building
1.1. Layered Design
For the majority of enterprises with chain-building requirements, they prefer to use blockchain technology to settle the business problems rather than invest too much in the underlying development, just like most common systems. So NULS has adopted a layered design to separate the business layer from the bottom layer to enable enterprises to focus on their own business development when building a chain.
To optimize the modularity and realize the complete independence of modules, and improve the customization degree of enterprises in chain-building, NULS has introduced the micro-service architecture in the layered design.
With the micro-service architecture, enterprises can just focus on business development. Moreover, NULS provides basic service libraries for each individual service module to handle basic issues such as communication between modules, which can further lower the development cost and simplify the development.
The layered design of NULS consists of three layers, namely micro-service infrastructure layer, blockchain basic service layer and DAPP application layer.
1.2. Micro-service Infrastructure Layer
As the core of NULS 2.0, the first micro-service infrastructure layer is called NULSTAR. It is a blockchain micro-service underlying framework, mainly used to realize service discovery, service registration, service communication and other functions required by the microservice architecture.
For the enterprises with the preference to build a chain based on micro-service architecture, they can directly develop the blockchain on NULSTAR with no need to care about the underlying development.
In order to reduce the chain-building workload for enterprises, NULSTAR also features many common functions such as reports, authorizations, updaters, translators, etc. In this way, the enterprises can directly use the built-in functions provided by NULSTAR, and do not need to develop them by themselves.
1.3. Blockchain Basic Service Layer
The second layer of NULS2.0 is the blockchain basic service layer. In this layer, NULS divides the blockchain system into different modules based on the micro-service architecture, which are mainly the general module and business module.
The general module is the core module required for all blockchains, including network module, ledger module, account module, transaction module, consensus module and block management module. The business module is developed by enterprises according to their specific business requirements.
When building a chain in the modular way provided by NULS, the enterprises only need to select the general module from the NULS module repository to build a basic chain, and then integrate the own business module with the basic chain.
The micro-service architecture adopted by NULS further improves the independence of modules. There is no code dependency between modules, and each module can be independently deployed and serve the external systems.
This is of great commercial value to the enterprises using NULS for modular chain-building. The business of large-scale enterprises is often very complex. So it is essential to split the business to reduce the complexity of the system and facilitate the maintenance. Building a chain based on NULS makes this process much easier. When there is a need to iterate the blockchain, the enterprise only needs to develop the corresponding module and then replace the original one, which will not have any impact on other modules so that the stability of the system can be ensured. As for new business functions, the enterprise can just develop new business modules and then add them to the system, which is very simple and can help reduce operating costs. In addition, there is no restriction for development language in NULS, so the enterprise can use any language for business module development.
In cases where the enterprise wants to customize the blockchain with the consensus mechanism different from NULS, this is also easy. They can simply develop their own consensus module to replace the consensus module provided by NULS. Compared with other chain-building projects, NULS won’t limit the enterprise to use the same consensus mechanism, which makes it truly highly flexible, achieving the most optimal customization.
1.4. DAPP Application Layer
To help enterprises build their own blockchain ecosystem, NULS 2.0 also designs the third layer — a DAPP application layer.
Developers who want to develop DAPPs on the blockchain based on NULS can connect to the blockchain through the interface provided by the connector in NULSTAR, and then easily obtain various services. In addition, NULS will also provide the basic application library for DAPPs in the third layer to help developers deal with network messages and communication protocols, etc., so that developers can focus more on the DAPP’s business development and further reduce the development cost of DAPPs.
2. One-click Chain-building
NULS believes that there is an increasing need for enterprises to use blockchains to solve their own business problems in the future. Although the modular chain-building in NULS 2.0 can greatly reduce the corresponding cost of the enterprise, the development of business modules is still a must. For small and medium-sized enterprises with tight funds and weak technical strength, there are still many difficulties. In order to accelerate the implementation of blockchain application and help enterprises solve the problems of difficult chain-building and high costs, NULS hopes to realize “one-click chain-building” through the graphical interface provided by the core product Chain Factory.
Chain Factory is implemented based on the NULS module repository, which is jointly maintained by the NULS core team and the NULS technical community with built-in basic modules developed by NULS. Other developers can also participate in the development of the modules by submitting the developed work to the code repository. After passing the review, the module can be included in the module repository for public use. With the continuous improvement of the module repository, NULS will supply more general modules and business modules, and will become a basic development library applicable to different industries, providing complete blockchain solutions for even more enterprises.
The Chain Factory itself is a blockchain, in which the nodes can run multiple chains at the same time. In this way, the blockchain built through the Chain Factory can directly run on the nodes of the Chain Factory, which saves the trouble of setting up the operation environment of the blockchain node and greatly reduces the cost.
Chain-building can be realized through Chain Factory with only four simple steps:
1. Select the required modules in the module repository of the Chain Factory;
2. Configure the basic system parameters and fill in the information of the genesis block;
3. Fill in the chain introduction and chain running method, such as the main purpose of the chain, whether to run it directly on the node of the Chain Factory;
4. Pay a deposit and broadcast a chain-building transaction, after the confirmation of the transaction, the new chain will be built successfully.
If you choose to directly use the Chain Factory node to run your blockchain, the node will determine whether the module you selected already exists. If not, it will be downloaded from the module repository first. At this point, your chain will run automatically. Of course, you can also choose to set up your own nodes to run your blockchain.
Through the graphical interface provided by the Chain Factory, enterprises and developers only need to go through a simple configuration to build a chain with ease and efficiency, leading to significant cost and time savings. The “one-click chain-building” of the Chain Factory will speed up the implementation of blockchain commercial applications, allowing us to envision the function of multi-chain parallels.
3. NULS Cross-chain Ecosystem
In the future, there will be more and more blockchains, so it will be a must to realize the intercommunication between chains and make the value and data circulate. In order to achieve this goal, NULS provides its own cross-chain solution.
3.1. NULS Cross-chain Solution
NULS cross-chain is based on the NULS main network, where all blockchains only communicate with NULS main network. The verification of the transaction is performed by the NULS main network and each parallel chain trusts the verification results.
Blockchains developed based on NULS can directly select the cross-chain module provided by NULS and integrate it into the system to utilize the cross-chain function. The NULS cross-chain module implements the NULS cross-chain protocol, which can easily communicate with the main network, and then transfer assets to other parallel chains through the NULS main network.
For Ethereum, Bitcoin and other public chains that are not affected by NULS, NULS provides a common protocol conversion layer to enable them to communicate with the blockchain in the NULS ecosystem. The protocol conversion layer can communicate with public chains such as Ethereum and NULS main network as well, which realizes the intercommunication with other parallel chains in the NULS ecosystem in an indirect way.
3.2. Formation of Cross-chain Ecosystem
Due to the micro-service architecture, the blockchain built on NULS can easily utilize the cross-chain function by directly adding the cross-chain module with built-in NULS cross-chain protocol, and perform value and data intercommunication with other parallel chains.
The NULS protocol conversion layer also enables other public chains to communicate with the NULS main network, thereby indirectly communicating with other parallel chains in the NULS ecosystem.
On March 28, 2019, the NULS core team has released the NULS 2.0Alpha version — PanGu v1.0. Even now, enterprises and individuals can carry out modular chain-building based on NULS2.0. The birth of Chain Factory in the future will further facilitate the process through the “one-click chain-building”. At that time, the multi-chain parallel will be possible in the NULS ecosystem, which will lay a solid foundation for the construction of the cross-chain ecosystem.
Conclusion
1. Based on the micro-service architecture, NULS realizes the decoupling of modules in the code layer, with no restriction on the development language. The blockchain built on NULS will be equipped with good scalability, which is conducive to subsequent iteration and maintenance, and reduces the operation cost of the enterprise.
2. NULS will develop the core product Chain Factory with the NULS module repository to utilize the “one-click chain-building” and help enterprises and developers build their own blockchain efficiently;
3. NULS will accelerate the implementation of blockchain commercial applications through modular chain-building and “one-click chain-building”. There will be an environment of multi-chain parallels in NULS ecosystem, which is a solid foundation for the construction of NULS cross-chain ecosystem. In the future, NULS cross-chain solutions will realize the NULS cross-chain ecosystem of numerous chain intercommunications.

NULS Makes Big Moves in the Market and Bigger Moves on its Roadmap Go to the profile of NULS NULS Mar 11 With NULS 2.0 on the horizon, we have seen some excitement building around NULS. The Alpha testing of 2.0 will soon move to our second testnet — an incentivized testnet aided by the Node Forge proposal and voted on by the NULS Global Community in anticipation of NULS 2.0. Community developer and CCC member Berzeck has completed the most basic modules for Nulstar — the precursor and underlying basis of 2.0. Both are currently undergoing thorough internal testing and are scheduled to be released to testnet as early as April. To prepare for the eventual marketing campaign and implementation of our branding strategy, a new website is currently being designed to help display some of the major design features and advantages of NULS 2.0 and Chain Factory — the groundbreaking enterprise blockchain product that will be based on 2.0 capability. As a taste of what’s to come, Chain Factory will also begin its developmental design phase in the Spring of 2019. And while many other projects are just now starting to realize the benefits of an underlying microservices architecture, NULS leads the way and has already begun testing it with the first round of internal tests for 2.0 and Nulstar. Starting from Scratch Vs. Starting From Simplicity The lowest base level of a blockchain’s architecture must be compatible with the coding level of existing systems in order for existing systems to integrate the blockchain’s features. Otherwise, cost is increased while efficiency is lost. This is the main reason NULS 2.0 was designed — because there is a demand for this type of simple base architecture to enable the adoption of businesses by integrating existing systems with blockchain technology. It is not enough to simply be able to build a chain. Meaningful adoption will begin with an underlying microservices framework which doesn’t require a business to build or start their blockchain integration from scratch. NULS 2.0 and Chain Factory will make it possible for a business to create a fully customizable, flexible, and easily updated blockchain perfectly suited to their specific needs in a fraction of the time, and at a fraction of the cost of the legacy model. There are many projects in the space catering to the enterprise market, but NULS leads the vanguard of innovation with customizable modular services, only made possible by 2.0. More User-Friendly Wallets Many other developments will find their way to completion during the Spring of 2019, as the market appears to be making its return to positive sentiment. Wallet choices and alternatives have been a main priority of NULS throughout the crypto-winter and Ledger integration is entering its final stage of development. Binance’s Trust Wallet is an open-source, secure wallet service that is also being currently integrated by NULS and allows the user to always be in control of their private keys. Addition to Bitkeep wallet is also being integrated, and will allow users to stake, and vote from the wallet. The desktop wallet for the 1.0 mainnet has been a cumbersome resource hog — and this is to be expected, because running the desktop version of NULS is nothing short of running a full node. Noticeably, other projects like ETH only used full node wallets in the early stages of development because of synching and memory requirements — a full node is not a wallet designed for everyday customer usage. In the past six months of development NULS has welcomed the addition of several light wallets — a web wallet, Moshe’s light wallet, and most recently the CCC’s Nytro wallet. Nytro is a stand-alone application that does not require users to access it by importing their private keys over the internet. With all of this underway it is not surprising that the market is starting to warm up to NULS, even prior to the launch of a formal marketing campaign. Technological innovation takes time, and we appreciate the community’s support during the development of 2.0. Innovation has always been one of the major strengths of NULS, and we look forward to sharing some of the fruits of that innovation with everyone soon.Thank you NULS Community for all of your support! The Core Team — #Nulsdeep and no sleep till adoption. https://medium.com/@nuls/nuls-makes-big-moves-in-the-market-and-bigger-moves-on-its-roadmap-262cfe06c40b

Essam mentioned that *“community is the overriding part of the public blockchain ecosystem. If you develop a DApp or tool that no one uses, it’s worthless. First, you need to build your user base and delve into what products they need. It’s reasonable to operate in a public-chain way, which allows us to develop communities more easily, rather than providing services to individual companies. When blockchain technology is truly widely used in enterprises, more substantial changes will take place.”* 6 On Dec. 22nd, **Jason Zhang**, NULS Founder, and Alicia Huang, Commercial & PR Department Director, were invited to attend the CSDN Blockchain Workshop on how to develop smart contracts and build with Java. At the workshop in Beijing, Jason shared the zero-based practical development of a smart contract. 7 **Liesa**, NULS Core Team CEO, took the interview of the CSDN’s Blockchain Lemon-“Late winter: Can the blockchain warm up?” Liesa believes that the rapid development of an industry in its early stage is bound to involve people with different purposes, and also incur various situations, which are normal phenomena. The global economy is in the downward trajectory in 2018, understandably, anxiety and uneasiness have been ubiquitous in the global economy body. Blockchain, a brand new industry, is still in the early stage of development. People involved may be more in a sense of crisis than those in other industries. Every coin has two sides. Yes,it is the best time to buy altcoins because the prices are good even do not know where is the bottom. Except above altcoin. I was wondering what coins will give the best returns at the moment. So, I choose NULS, the staking ROI varies between 14% and 18%. That's awesome.
