81  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Building a mining rig and thinking... on: May 17, 2011, 05:18:19 AM
So I'm building a couple of mining rigs (probably 3 and, yes, I'm looking for investors) but I've got a question that came out of a discussion I had earlier today with a fellow Bitcoiner:

The Playstation 3 is a nice machine and has a decent GPU. I've heard rumors that there's mining software for it but I've not seen any yet. What do you think of using a few PS3's as rigs?

Rage

No, they won't be good enough. Do you really think that  PS3 which is like 4/5 years old could match up to even a 5770? It just won't he worth it unless you already have a bunch of PS3s lying around that are unused.
82  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: UK exchange: Britcoin on: May 17, 2011, 05:13:54 AM
not many people selling BTC at the moment.... come on people, I wanna buy some  Cheesy
Offer a better price.

eh, that was just a brief period when only one person was selling and that was at £10 / 1 btc...

And I'm not interested in waiting around on the orderbook, I just wanted to own some ASAP =)

But never mind, it's all go now.

Want to buy some bitcoins? Tempt me! Put a decent bid on britcoin and I or someone else might just decide to fill it. At least it is a bit more constructive than complaining that there are no asks.

i am sooo freaking <s>bad</s> glad you're still posting, vladimir. (  Smiley )

you had me worried a couple of days ago, when you said a post might be your last.  we need you russians - especially the best of you:  so practical and strategic...

american tinkers and russian chess-players.  we could ("dare i say it" [see: beatles; 'help'; movie]) rule the world...

I think he's English...

I might be interested in this. When do you think your rigs will be up?
84  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best Coin/Buck rig V2 on: May 16, 2011, 08:05:13 PM
Hi guys,
I've been doing some research, and i think this is the best mining rig I could get right?

Getting it when I get some money together... Smiley

Pls comment Wink

Damn, that motherboard looks sweet. That build would cost me around £700 caseless with 4x 5850s.

I'm just wondering whether it's worth the extra £30 to get a 5870 here in the UK... I just had my first 5870 delivered today and it's pretty sweet doing 370MHash/s

Just sold my first 2 coins on here for a low price of £3.50/coin. I just wanted to get my first sale Cheesy
86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: is it better to keep btc's on a site or the bitcoin software? on: May 15, 2011, 06:04:15 AM
Here is the safest, 100% hacker proof way to store Bitcoins.

1. Set up a computer that has no access to the Internet whatsoever.

2. Install and run Bitcoin on it (from removable media, e.g. USB flash memory stick).  Copy the first auto-generated address you see onto a piece of paper, or better, print it out.  Save a copy as a Notepad file on your flash memory stick.  There is no need to wait for the block chain to download (which shouldn't be happening anyway if you're offline)

3. Back up the wallet.dat file it creates onto your USB stick.  Better yet, do it onto two USB sticks.  It's located at %APPDATA%\Bitcoin\wallet.dat.  Keep both copies safe and secure.  Don't insert the flash drive into any computers until you're ready to spend.

4. Send all your Bitcoins to that address you generated and saved in step 2.  Use Block Explorer to keep track of your balance.

5. Format the hard drive of the computer, or at least delete your wallet.dat from it, or never connect it to the internet.

Main point: The software doesn't have to talk to the network for you to receive bitcoins.  By providing no means for your private keys to be reached from the Internet, they cannot be remotely stolen by anyone.

When ready to spend:

1. Go into a brand new installation of the Bitcoin software, and exit it completely (so it's not on your taskbar, etc.)

2. Go into the %APPDATA%\Bitcoin folder and delete all files with the extension .DAT.

3. Copy your prized wallet.dat into the folder

4. Restart Bitcoin and let it rebuild everything.  Coins will appear when the block chain is downloaded (possibly hours).

5. Spend like normal.

Don't forget to wear your tin hat whilst doing it!
87  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rate my Rig on: May 13, 2011, 09:40:33 PM
I would set up a dual psu, but im not sure how to, have any advice on how i could, or where i can find how to do so?

Im using 2 sticks of that RAM for my main PC, thats why i purchased so much.

It's still a huge overkill. A Sempron 140 and 2GB of RAM is enough for a dedicated mining rig.

As for the dual-PSU, it's just like using one psu, except you using two of them... Two power cables, and twice as many connectors inside.

Spend the money you will save on more mining power!
88  Economy / Trading Discussion / How much return should I offer an investor? on: May 13, 2011, 09:16:22 PM
Basically, I've pitched the idea of investing into Bitcoin mining to my friend. He would provide the capital to build the PC, and I'd do everything else from there.

I'm thinking of loaning around £500-600 from him, and then building a rig and either...

a) Paying him back a fixed amount, I'm not sure how much is a reasonable about, £700/£750?

b) Giving him a percentage of the income from day 1, say 40 to 60%, again, i'm not sure how much is reasonable.

I would be paying the electricity costs and everything too, so paying him back a percentage of the income would need to take this into consideration.

Anyone have any suggestions?
89  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using a 560Ti and a 5870 at the same time? on: May 13, 2011, 05:38:25 PM
Can anyone confirm whether this is possible?
90  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which countries have the cheapest electricity? on: May 13, 2011, 04:42:36 PM
Just took a look at my last bill and it averaged out to about .12 USD/kWh here in Korea. From a low of about .05 USD/kWh for the first 100 kWh, .11 for the 2nd 100, .17 for the 3rd 100, to .25 for the 4th 100. That's the last bill I got before I started mining so I'm pretty curious to see the next one.

There is no way that I could afford my lifestyle with your energy rates.

Car gas is also pretty expensive.

I should point out that I only pay about 6% income tax, which is negligible in my mind compared to what I paid in Canada, so it balances out. Medical care and food are pretty cheap here as well.

Where do you live?
91  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Using a 560Ti and a 5870 at the same time? on: May 13, 2011, 01:49:47 PM
I've just ordered a new 5870 and I will soon be selling my 560Ti and buying another 5870.

For the time being, is it possible to use both the ATi and the NVidia card?

If so, how will I go about doing it? Is it just a matter of running two instances of a miner, but changing the flags?
92  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining with wireless connection? on: May 13, 2011, 01:14:14 PM
Why are you using laptops? Surely they're stupidly inefficient?
93  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 5870 price differences? on: May 13, 2011, 01:13:37 PM
Ah, I started to worry because the XFX one was pretty much the only one at that price here in the UK.

XFX are a pretty decent brand too Smiley so I'm happy.

95  Bitcoin / Mining / 5870 price differences? on: May 13, 2011, 12:39:59 PM
Is there any reason why this 5870 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-HD-5870-DisplayPort/dp/tech-data/B0037YMWXO/ref=de_a_smtd) is so much cheaper than this 5870 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-HD5870-GDDR5-Graphics-Card/dp/tech-data/B0031HAVSA/ref=de_a_smtd)?
96  Bitcoin / Mining / 2 x 5870 w/ PCI-E x16(x16) & x16(x4) mobo on: May 13, 2011, 11:20:13 AM
I have the Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H motherboard (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-280-GI&tool=5) and the board has CrossFire support apparently.

It has two PCI-E x16 slots, so will I still be able to efficiently run two 5870s? I've just ordered one of the cards, but I want to upgrade to another one in the future. Will the speed double (or almost double) or will it not increase by as much since it will be using an x16 (x4) slot?
97  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining in UK/EU. Hardware info on: May 12, 2011, 07:24:45 PM
Why such a monster PSU for only 2 5870/5850?

My motherboard supports 2 cards (Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H) so I'm just selling my GTX 560Ti, buying a single 5870 (For now) and then putting another in there at a later date. It's not a dedicated mining rig though.
