1  Economy / Scam Accusations / BEWARE -- The First Bitcoin Exchange in Venezuela " VENEBITCOIN " Is a scam! on: March 09, 2014, 08:33:49 PM
Dear friends & members of the Bitcoin community.

Firstly I appologise for any typo or mistake. Im not a native english speaker and I write from my mobile. We write this brief text to inform the community that the site http://www.venebitcoin.com/ is a scam and that we personally lost 300 USD because of their wrongdoing.

SADLY, the beginning of the Bitcoin Industry in Venezuela is actually a sad one. We ventured to buy there Bitcoins because we are Venezuelans and we wanted to promote the newborn Bitcoin industry in our country.

As you know, Venezuela has a fierce currency exchange control and there is great expectations on this industry to emerge there as an alternative to such control. These guys used the urgency we have as a society to profit and make quick buck and we would like to use this platform to inform others so they don't fall for such a scam!

My wife and I decided to support the bitcoin community in Venezuela which is very small and which we consider to be very important to develop due to the currency controll that grips my homeland. Im very experienced and supportive of bitcoin in general so I understood that I was risking my savings whilst doing this because its a new exchange. We deposited our trust, time, efforts and good will on their site on the 27th of February, and they deposited our money in their accounts and disappeared after a brief exchange of emails and a promise to sort the problems they have with their "payment processing platform" in 48-72 hours.

Despite of asuming to take this risk, I took some considerations, checked there was no negative background, that the company was active on twitter, and knowing was that this was a newly founded company I wrote to them asking questions before I proceeded. They replied and answered my questions. Most revleant one :: is your system automatized??? to what they replied: YES.

THE VERY BIG MISTAKE I MADE was to actually spend such a sum on a newly and non-trustworthy entity, but I did because I fealt proud and excited that there were signs of a BTC community emerging in Venezuela.

After I paid and 5 hrs passed without me recieving my coins I wrote them an email and they replied that because my transaction came from outside of the US, their system requiered them to do a manual check which wouldt take 42-72 working hrs.

I worte to them that I was becoming uneasy, that they had to deliver my BTC and they replied that we needed to wait this time to do so. I angrily came back to them asking for a refund and they said that it was difficult due to their payment platform conditions. They offered me to send me a small portion of my BTC as a sign of good faith and to calm me down. At this point I was sure this was a scam. I accepted their proposal and i worte them a pretty comperhensive (and bitcoin-epic) email showing SERIOURS support to the community in Venezuela, serious desire not to hinder their newly-born enterprise and promissing them not go public about this before the time they had requested me (the tuesday after the friday where we were at this point). I actually waited untill wednesday night and they didnt replied. I wrote many messages to them before going public and I saw myself speaking alone for two days and today wednesday I published the first info on the internet.

They replied 4 days ago saying that they didnt agreed with the fact that I went to the social networks, that their solence was due to the carnival hollidays in Venezuela (note that their page says their offices are in Miami and Caracas) that their boss was now on a meeting and that they will come back to me as soon as possible. They obviously didnt.

Tomorrow will be 10 days since I transfered them the money. My account was charged and I already made peace with what happened. I just DONT WANT ANY BAD ACTORS TO DESTROY WHAT WE HAVE BEEN BUILDING FOR YEARS and DONT WANT ANY OF YOU TO GO THROUGH THIS.
I promise a full article on the subject on my blog and on this space as soon as my working schedule allows me too.

TL,DR ::: Its a scam. They are playing as if its not by replying some emails and doing some shady actions.

3  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Getting mtgox values into google spreadsheets on: July 26, 2013, 09:48:35 PM
I use bitcoincharts with the function:

Code:
=Index(ImportHTML("http://bitcoincharts.com/"&"?workaround="&INT(NOW()*1E3)&REPT(GoogleFinance("GOOG");0),"table",4),2,2)

That'll cause the newest price to be downloaded, and be refreshed damn fast.  Wink

SO MANY THANKS!

Have a great day! Will tip soon when I get my next reward!

Saludos!

Fair enough. I believe mining is either a professional huge enterprise or a very interesting and fun hobby. Either or, the decentralisation of the money supply its whats truly game-changing.

11  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Do you still want to buy a BTC miner? Better read this first. on: July 03, 2013, 11:58:22 PM
Not everyone is buying these things to get a ROI.  I mine for the challenge of getting the best hashes from my hardware possible, and keeping my uptime as close to 100% as I can.  It's a hobby.  The fact I get some money out of it is a bonus to me.

Same for me! And its a way also to put your "money where your mouth is", to spend some good old bitcoins and to bring from the fiat into the crypto economy. Without mentioning that we are also running all the global finances! I trully think that its fascinating and makes a bit extra cash! I talk about this from the ammateur miner's perspective! I have trully found a beautifull vortex that has given me very important lessons about modernity!

Lets hope it all continues swell!

13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: State of the Real Bitcoin Economy on: July 03, 2013, 11:14:26 PM
We had this same problem back in the 1990s, during the first moneypunk wave.  People are making the same mistakes, too.

Every good revolutionary knows that he or she must provide something to the people that the status quo does not provide.  Manhattan bars do not need Bitcoin.  Big, domestic retailers do not need Bitcoin.  (Don't trot out the 'no chargebacks' argument.  We tried that.  It didn't work.)

I am working with young entrepreneurs down here in South Florida to get small-scale merchants in Latin America and the Caribbean to accept Bitcoin.  There already are a bunch of programmers in Argentina who accept Bitcoin, in part to bypass their currency controls.  (Oddly, I'm not hearing much from Venezuela, which is even worse.)

One problem is that Bitcoin stinks of Silicon Valley, which is notoriously US-centric.  Tell a Valley VC that you are going for the international market, and he'll tell you not to 'dilute' your focus.  Down here, I defy anyone not to do international trade.  We have the world's two busiest cruise ports in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which also are major pan-American freight ports, we are closer to dozens of foreign capitals than we are to Washington, DC, and all five major languages native to the Western Hemisphere are spoken here... often in the same sentence.  (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, French; plus Russian, German, and Hebrew)

We don't need Wal-Mart to accept Bitcoin.  We have Gyft for that.

What we need is more remittance networks to major cities in the Developing World and more small-scale import/export.

Porn and gambling could drive demand and awareness, but those guys already know about Bitcoin, and they'll do their thing when they are ready.

Dear Friend.

Hope all is great on your end.

Venezuela is currently (since 2002) under a very tight and restrictive currency exchange control. Thats why you hear little or nothing from us. The amount of foreign currency is limited by law. There is a 400 USD online limit (YEARLY) and a cap of 400 USD withdrawals of foreign currency in cash (only abroad) per month. All deals in foreign currency must be (indirectly, via the banks) approved by CADIVI (organism which controls the currency)

Its a tough nut to crack, yet, if venezuelans get more openminded and progressive (specially programmers) the growth of bitcoin in Venezuela promises to be spectacular. Lets hope this lid is opened soon and the ball gets rolling there soon. What bitcoin needs is the first country that massively and openly adopts it, and then the cycle re-ignite in a way more sustainable fashion.

Dedos cruzados!

15  Bitcoin / Pools / Discrepancy: Accepted shares vs. registered shares at Slush's Pool ???? on: July 03, 2013, 10:42:26 AM
Dear friends!

Im sort of n00b in the sense of mining so apologise if the questions is a bit boring.

I left mining my Imac overnight conected to slush's pool port 3333. I have propperly installed the stratum protocol and I can connect perfectly (and quite successfully) to BTCguild...

When I woke up in the morning, CGminer reports 530 shares accepted however in Slushs pool I only see 134 (and 0 shares denied)....

Im I doing something wrong or is it that slush's pool / mac compatibility is not so great???

Details of my computer ::

Graphics :: AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
Software :: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63b)

Thanks!

Have a great day!

 Shocked
18  Economy / Economics / Re: HOW FAR AWAY DO YOU SEE THE COLLAPSE OF THE POUND AND THE DOLLAR?? on: July 02, 2013, 05:14:59 PM
i have a good feeling that most of western countries backed by gold keeping wealthy elite families will end up making cryptocurrencies illegal. just like torrent network is being attacked now. in uk in the past year most of torrent hosted websites have been blocked. but i assume that they will shoot themselves in the foot as rest of the world will continue to develop in growth by using cryptocurrencies and drifting away from dollar/euro/pound. at that point wars might start just to restore the use of banking systems there and making cryptocurrencies illegal worldwide. we can speculate all day here - lets wait and see. im very interested to follow the world development after people taken control of their wealth.

The gold standard no longer exists, no western country has it's currency or economy backed by gold any longer. Both the USD and GBP are backed by confidence - confidence in the system, confidence in the ability to use a USD or a GBP to buy a good. As confidence erodes , the value erodes. To restore confidence the Fed and Bank of England (and now the Bank of Japan) have embarked on money printing exercises which have the impact of providing "free" money which is then used to buy assets that post a return. This has reinforced confidence but has had the impact of creating new asset bubbles. If those asset bubbles unwind sharply then once again confidence in the system will be questioned.

I think that there has been a shift towards gold as a better deposit of value than Fiat currencies in the last decade, SPECIALLY since the 2008 financial collapse! Countries that are not understanding this trend would be seriously affected afte the upcoming collapse. China, Russia, Brasil, Venezuela and India have all been very busy buying gold... The UK however sold on cheap in 2006 (thanks to Gordon Brown [link]http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/finance/thomaspascoe/100018367/revealed-why-gordon-brown-sold-britains-gold-at-a-knock-down-price/[link/]) ::  On the other hand, due to uncertainty and due to a weak euro-pound-dollar combination, Germany asked for the repatriation of 26% of their gold thats deposited at the Federal Reserve in the US!! As another element in this answer, In 2012 all central banks together bought more gold than in the previous 50 years!!! ::: [link]http://www.cnbc.com/id/100458951[/link]...

Even though is true that the Bretton Woods accord changed the balance of international economy to center around the dollar (which means, value backed upon the Use of Force) its also important to note that there seems to be a return to gold as an agreed and solid source of value that its not vulnerable to the money-printing caprice of Ben Bernanke and George Osbourne (+the company of most G8 countries)...

This is another place where Bictoin appears as an unexpected lifesaver for the modern Homo-Sapiens adventure. A de-centralised source of value seems  to be an essential element that needs to be put in place for a truly sustainable future.
