I found the edge yesterday, got within a few hundred yards and it was exhilarating to walk around it for a few hours. My old geography teacher can suck it, I knew he was lying. I'll send some video for a couple of Bitcoin as I believe I am the only one to have found it so far, that has to be worth something. Didn't want to go near the edge as I didn't want to fall off, but if anyone can up the offer, I will go back and try and get a bit closer.

306  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Gained from using Sources? on: April 08, 2018, 01:58:41 PM
Seems to be slightly differing opinions on this, at least on whether the posts would deserve merit or not. I have seen posts with literally just a link to an article or video, merited simply because they pointed to information that someone was asking for. This I actually agree with, because they have done the legwork and found the answer for the person posing the question. My only real point was that it should be made glaringly obvious that the post was not an original one, not that they don't deserve the merit. I decided not to out the poster in question, mainly because the responses above are mixed on their tactics. If a post brings perceived value to someone reading, and they have stated it is not original with a source link (no matter how subtle that may be), then I guess they are staying within the rules. It is especially true if someone has collated a number of relevant articles into one post, as it will save the reader the effort of trawling the internet in search of their answer. I'll try and check back on the profile (if I can find it) in a week or two and see what I feel then.
307  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Salary Paid in Bitcoin - would you do it? on: April 08, 2018, 03:44:02 AM
I don't think that's the point, although I get what you're saying. More about whether people would accept (any) cryptocurrency as payment. For the purposes of this thread, let's assume it's Bitcoin, or perhaps that you could choose which cryptocurrency to get paid in.
308  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Salary Paid in Bitcoin - would you do it? on: April 08, 2018, 03:35:05 AM
A company did an interesting social media experiment on people's acceptance of cryptocurrency as a method of payment for salary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vcGUeDlnLU&t=30s

Looks as though it could possibly have been staged by the company (I don't think so??), but the results seemed similar to what I would expect if it was genuine. And I think it is actually a clever way of promoting their token sale, more potential to go viral than other promotional videos I've seen. Anyway, personally I think I would be happy to take cryptocurrency as at least part payment for salary, and depending on circumstances, the whole amount.
309  Economy / Speculation / Re: Next hours a drop hours! be there for the good BTC price!!! BREAKING NEWS! on: April 07, 2018, 11:57:47 PM
Any reason why you believe there will be a 10-20% drop in just a few hours? You haven't provided any further information to indicate why this will suddenly happen. I can't see anything to back up this claim anywhere else, at least not in the time span you have stated anyway. Best to at least link to some technical analysis, but to be honest, no-one can pinpoint drastic moves like that with that level of accuracy. Doubt there is any credence whatsoever to this statement.
310  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Best social media platforms to promote an ICO ? on: April 07, 2018, 10:19:22 PM
I think it is a multi pronged question. If you are looking to raise mass awareness of the project and possibly investment, then the big players will be the way forward, Facebook, Twitter etc. They will still, even after recent restrictions, bring the biggest audience to the project. The problem is will it be the audience you would want for the project. This would depend on the type of project, as you can target certain demographics without even mentioning blockchain/crypto if you have a suitable project, providing links that can then explain it in more depth. For example, projects linked to e-commerce, VR, physical products etc. could all advertise to draw interest without mentioning blockchain application, bringing increased footfall to the website with more detailed information.

* Medium/Steemit/Reddit/YouTube are all good (and free) platforms, with potential to reach large numbers if the marketing team is experienced. Clever promotions can go viral, and can all be linked with other platforms.
* Facebook/Twitter can reach large numbers of people, but lots of fake profiles and not necessarily the right target market.
* Bitcointalk and other cryptocurrency forums reach the right target market, but still limited in numbers and many members have no intention of investing, just looking for freebies.

Overall I think that advertising and/or promoting across all mediums is the best way forward, as each will bring the benefits of their individual platforms. Keeping people up to date on project progress, whether they are current (or potential future) investors is the key, and to do that, project managers need to be pro-active in all areas.

Edit. I missed Telegram out, but to be honest, I really think that only becomes useful once people have found the project via other channels. Maybe I have not grasped the full capabilities of it yet, so if someone thinks otherwise, feel free to correct me.
311  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: George Soros Prepares to Trade Cryptocurrencies on: April 07, 2018, 09:52:57 PM
This is the main problem with any traditional finance investment companies entering into the cryptocurrency markets, their ability to turn it on it's head. The amount of money they can inject into the market gives them too much control at the current levels, especially with smaller marketcap currencies. That said, it is an inevitable result of success, and an indication that the next stage of the markets is coming soon. Could also speed up the rejection of poor projects and put the decent ones on an upward trajectory. Still can't decide, think I would rather they waited in the wings for another couple of years and then join in. The money is coming, but at this point I think it will be a trickle rather than a flood. Let's see.
312  Other / Meta / Re: 14 merit bonus for quality users [Jr to Sr. Member] on: April 07, 2018, 02:12:50 AM
I'll give this a shot. Think I've made some decent posts, whether they're worth any merit is another question altogether. Thanks.
313  Other / Meta / Merit Gained from using Sources? on: April 07, 2018, 01:55:17 AM
I was having a poke around the forum and noticed a really long detailed post, interesting and informative enough that I went to check out the user's other posts. I noticed that most, probably around 70%+ of posts were all sourced from various websites. These sources were always linked at the bottom of each post by the user, but he/she is earning merit for the posts (I'm guessing that the merit givers missed the source right at the bottom of the long posts). Just wanted to check if this was allowed or not, definitely seemed like a grey area anyway. I would think that if posting a full (virtually unedited) article, then the right thing to do would be to quote the source at the top of the post. I didn't take a note of the name, forgot, but should be able to find it if someone confirms this isn't allowed (will edit this post if and when that happens).
314  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do I need to file taxes (in USA) on cryptocurrency on: April 07, 2018, 01:45:38 AM
There are capital gains due on any profits made, and the US government (and others around the world) is getting more proactive in establishing guidelines. I could not find an official document, but these links might help. The first is a news article, and the second is a tax service which is linked at the bottom of the first article.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/01/30/cryptocurrency-and-taxes-what-you-need-to-know.html

https://bitcoin.tax/

At this point I would, at the very least, be keeping meticulous records of all of your cryptocurrency transactions in preparation for reporting. Always best to be prepared, especially when it comes to taxes. Best general advice is to hold for at least a year when possible (and monetarily worthwhile!), as this greatly reduces the amount of capital gains tax payable. Either way, best to get ahead of the game, keep records and put aside enough profits to cover any gains, remembering to keep track of any losses too.
315  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Is it right to kill a violent burglar? on: April 07, 2018, 01:29:19 AM
An interesting point, and in the particular case you are talking about, the police have decided that no further action will be taken.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-43676359

I think views on this vary wildly, both geographically and politically (and a whole load more factors depending on the situation). Personally I think that every case should be dealt with on an independent basis, there are so many different scenarios which could sway opinion (and legal decisions) either way. I don't think any law abiding citizen wants to commit murder, even when their life is possibly in danger, it is just not part of the majority's moral code, but if put in a situation where myself or my family's life is being threatened, I don't think I would have any other option. I would imagine most people just hope they are never put in that situation. As the saying goes, if you play with fire...
316  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why are people so enslaved of fiat money? on: April 07, 2018, 01:20:17 AM
Not sure I understand the question really. The answer is obvious, people need it to survive, even in countries where inflation has devalued the currency to the point of oblivion. It is far too early to be touting cryptocurrencies as the solution, that is (10/50/100?) years away before they will (maybe?) have made an impact on a global level. We are still in the embryonic stage, and till a majority of the world's population can use it for their day to day living, we will be using fiat currencies. Point in case, I had never even heard of the phrase 'fiat currency' until I started getting involved in cryptocurrency, it was cold hard cash.

I don't think I'll see a world with no fiat currencies in my lifetime, although at the increasing pace technology progresses, I could be wrong. Who knows, in 20 years, another idea could come along, where currency is decided based on a person's weight/height, and they get allocated a certain amount for food per week, enough to survive. Houses could all be allocated exactly according to how many people live there, so there would be no housing shortages. There are any number of ways the world could move, even in my restricted imagination, just think where the geniuses could take us.

Edit.

Hahaha, I just read the last bit of your post, didn't realise the whole thing was an advert for another cryptocurrency. Ah well, my point still stands.
317  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Limitations to join new channels in Telegram???? on: April 07, 2018, 01:08:03 AM
Why would you join that many channels? Time to cull the herd and get it to a manageable level, with projects that you are either invested and/or interested in. There is no reason to be signed up to so many, guessing most will be bounty related, so the first step is to leave ones where the coins have already been distributed. Being a member on so many channels could make you miss an important announcement from a project where you have skin in the game, get rid of the rubbish and try to focus your attention. It will pay off in the long run.
318  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Patience is a virtue in Cryptocurrency Trading. on: April 07, 2018, 12:59:56 AM
I would agree with this to some extent (and 100% for inexperienced investors), but there will always be opportunities to make short term gains if you know what to look for. It still involves research and patience, but really it comes down to timing. Doing the research first can pinpoint coins you are interested in, then keeping an eye on their progress, e.g. hitting significant targets on their roadmap, big announcements, partnerships etc. By paying close attention to a smaller number of projects (rather than scanning the whole market), you can sometimes put yourself a step ahead of other less involved investors/traders. I'm not talking hours/days here, but a decent return in less than a month is definitely possible once you know what to look out for. This tactic can also work for the reverse, e.g. projects missing targets, negative news etc., helping you to exit earlier than others (and then buy back in later if you so wish).
319  Economy / Economics / Re: Why do people buy high and sell low on: April 07, 2018, 12:53:33 AM
I have been lucky enough not to have to do this, but would not hesitate if I needed the money. That would be the only logical reason I would consider selling at a loss, but avoidable if you force yourself to follow the age old rule of only investing what you can afford to lose. That said, circumstances can change in an instant, and if necessary I would do it. I have made conscious decisions not to invest in coins that I think are over valued, even though I think the project has huge value; better to search for under valued coins than chasing ones which have already posted big gains, especially in a short space of time. Was able to get in a couple of these after the recent market drops, but have also missed out on others. Can't win them all.
320  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk forum should hit 2 million members in less than a month!!! on: April 05, 2018, 11:48:16 PM
For your info, there is already more than 2 Million members registered in the forum. You can find out more about it here.

Also you can check out Vod's site about some pretty cool statistics of Bitcointalk here. It tries to calculate how much active members we have on the forum and it has some per user stats as well.

Ah cool. Thanks for the links, guess I was looking at outdated data, still found it interesting though. Recognise quite a few of the the most merited users, not surprisingly I suppose, given that I always see their names popping up on the forum. As mentioned on Vod's site, still just under 100,000 away from 1 million active users, so I guess that would be the next (real) milestone, before the end of the year?
