Do you have heard or read about Maslow's hierarchy of needs? One of the top motivator is Maslow's self actuation; the feeling of doing something that feels you complete or you have fulfilled something. If one have a willing and desire to do the job without even being paid but just to prove that they can do it and the output could b great that is actuation. You don't even need to push someone to do the job if they feel they need to do it. So rather delegating other to do the job, you could just ask first who wants to do the job.
42  Economy / Economics / Re: why bitcoin is so much special than others currency ? on: March 11, 2018, 07:26:19 AM
I will answer this question assuming that the "other currency" is a fiat. Bitcoin innovate many fiat features, and one of that is the transfer of currency. In deed there are credit card and paypal which could do this. But transfer or processing fees is more cheaper in bitcoin, the conversion is much even advantageous compare to fiat based services. There are times that I transfer bitcoin to one of my friend across the city and it didn't cost me a single penny. I even do some tap at my phone doing that, and wolla, an instant transfer.

Great job, I wish I could to wrangle the data like that someday!

Thank you for your appreciation. Just stay tune, watch and Practice, soon you will create more than I could do. Keep Learning.

We don't know in which sections are given the most smerits?

You can now see it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3093768.0

Excellent post, highly informative. I think the reason Hero members receive the most merits is likely because they are more well known in the community, they have formed friendships and create acquaintances here on the forum which leads to them being looked favorably upon in the posts. Also, hero members are bound to give out the most merit as nearly all of the merit sources are at least hero or above.

Thank you for your appreciation.
I agree with you; I so many great and informative thread created by those rank, most of the time they nail lower rank questions. But there are exceptions...  That is what you get thru experience and wide reading.

Thank you for sharing this data this really helps me to understand more about merits. As I read this post I was enlightened that merit is very essential to each users now. My hopes are so high that merits will be given to deserving people by users who has golden harts.

Thank you for your appreciation.
I hope it clarifies some of untold information about merits. I'll be that one with the golden heart.

First, can you tell the usernames of those users you are talking about, I would love to see their posts, especially who became full members. Based on you recent merits sent I see one such member,

That is a good idea, but it will need more time and more digging. I think displaying their usernames is not necessary for now.

...if the thing that you have done here was useful to me, I could have rewarded you with some merits.

I am amazed that you think the OP does not deserve your highly treasured merit. Not even a recommendation from you? Wow! Such a well thought out topic and research like this should get well-meaning merits - at all time. Of the 29 merits the OP received, yours isn't even there.

Thank you. There could only be two reasons for that; It's either he don't like the post (but I am wondering why he even bother to comment?) or he don't like information about merits.

Also, to the statistician up above, great post.  If I had some sMerit to give you, I would as this was a really good post.

A simple thank you will do. Anyway, thank you for your appreciation

Awesome work! Congrats!

I hope forum admins use this data for upgrading and improving this merit system!

In my opinion there are much work to be done!

1) There are still people that don't know how this works.
2) People think that giving merit will decrease their merit count. (don't know difference between merit and sMerit)
3) Many users do not care to give sMerit

I won't be discussing merit system here! This is not the point of the topic!
Just a little message for forum admins.

Great work @zentdex

Thank you for your appreciation. Yes, there are so much work to be done, but with millions of members start helping together to explain merit, the work could be easy.

44  Other / Meta / Where the Merit Pours? on: March 09, 2018, 05:05:05 PM
Where the Merit Pours?

Hello fellow members!

Frequent questions are asking for thread or section which received most of the merit.  Thus, I created this based on theymos merit txt logs issued last March 1.

Here you go: https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz
Similar to trust.txt.xz, it'll be updated weekly. It will show only the last 120 days of data; someone else should archive the old ones if you want them.
I am especially interested in analyses of this data which could point to sub-communities where the initial sMerit is exhausted and new sources are necessary, and people who might be good merit sources.
Edit: Note that for a little while I had user_to and user_from as names, but I decided to change it to IDs.

There are 37,939 Merit logs in the dataset which pinpoint to 11,318 (29.83%) unique thread. That means most of the time (70%) merits are given to a thread with existing merits.
Below is the result of thread per section which received merit in any part of it either to the original post or post reply of members.

This show that most of the merit where been sent in the threads inside the Local section, but the highest number of merits was being sent in Economy section. On the other hand, Other section received the highest average merit per thread. Additionally, there are threads which I can’t retrieved and presume those are deleted post.

___________________________________________________________________________

I categorize each thread to One Page thread which consists of less than 20 replies, Short Thread with 20-500 replies and Long Thread with more than 500 replies.

Number of Merit per Thread per Category

Based on the table above it is remarkable that a longer thread tends to accumulate more merits.  I include here the list of threads who received the max merit per category. Just a reminder, merits includes merit received by the main post and replies; the data was captured last March 1 and may be different at the time of this posting.
One Page Thread – https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2895261 Deleted Post
Short Thread – https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2827596
Long Thread - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336

Members who give Merit per Thread

The result is synonymous to the previous table. It is so amazing to see a single page thread with 59 users that give merit inside it, but unfortunately that post was been deleted.

___________________________________________________________________________

I didn't want to seem inquisitive, but I browse thru each board for each section and found the following results.

Bitcoin Section

There are so many thread that received merit in the Bitcoin Discussion board it also received the most number of merit in a single thread. On the other hand, there are less than a hundred threads in the Project Development board who received merits.
Below are the list of topics which accumulate most of the merits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Economy Section

In this section Marketplace got the most number of thread with merits while the maximum merit in a thread can be found on Economics board.
Below are the list of topics which accumulate most of the merits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Other Section

Most of use expected this, the most number of merits pour on to the Meta board. It is also the board with threads got the most accumulated merit. Some even suggest creating a Merit board, but some say this could be temporary because soon people will get usual of merits. On the other hand, there are seven threads in Archival which received merits, I check one of that and it really helps.
Below are the list of topics which accumulate most of the merits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Alternate cryptocurrencies

Announcements and Altcoin Discussion seems to get equal share, but Announcements got much more higher number of topics with merit and average merit for a thread.
Below are the list of topics which accumulate most of the merits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Local Section

The result above shows that Russian board lead the most number of threads with merits. While German board received the highest in terms of Average merit.
Below are the list of topics which accumulate most of the merits.

___________________________________________________________________________

Overall I see that Merits are distributed in every corner of the forum, even to those archival board and also to local board with the lesser amount of threads. I see no section or board that got zero merits, but we cannot deny the fact that there are sections that got most of the merits. I see most of the member Respect and Merited Satoshi for what he has started; two among his topics got the most merit in each board. infofront with his Wall Observer BTC… topic accumulate most of the merits. Which I think shows that we prioritize bitcoin price movement most of the time. And of course, the topic Merit & new rank requirements by theymos prove that the Merit System is efficient, agreed upon by most of the members and widely disseminated down to Local boards and in every corner of the forum.

Again, this is not an official stat; some may have found it quite confusing or misleading thus I am always open to comments and suggestion. I may miss some or many part of the analysis, but I know you could help me draw more conclusion. I hope this post answer most of your questions. Thank you for your support.

45  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Ratio on: March 08, 2018, 03:26:35 PM
Theymos published actual merit data, you can use that for actuate numbers per rank.
In fact, I'll add this to my to do list as I like the idea.

Thank for the info. However, the data that was released doesn't includes active member who did NOT RECEIVED Merits.
Anyway, I have created Stat based on those data which can be found here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3082289
46  Other / Meta / Re: Merit Stat from theymos data on: March 08, 2018, 02:10:18 PM
does it mean people getting short of sMerits? Or trying to give less?
I would like to see the spread of merits among the users.
Were they fed up in giving merits? Were they exhausted? Can't they find quality posts now? Or what? So members like me will be informed about their reasons and expectations for me to have merit/s.
Thank you for your appreciation.
This is based on my opinion but as what I see both of your question is could be answered by YES; People are getting short of sMerits and trying to give less. However, I have no proof how much remaining sMerits are left in each account to tell they are giving less.

How could there be 64 unique staff accounts, 15 global mods, and 3 admin? I think the numbers are a bit off. There are only about 30 staffs, 4 global mods, and 2 admins (well it's 3 if you count theymos_away).
Thank you for your appreciation.
The count includes theymos; I’ll better manually check those numbers next time.

We don't know in which sections are given the most smerits?
Thank you for that suggestion, I’m working on that. I’ll update you once finished.

I am just wondering if those are send merits who among received those merits.
Thank you for your appreciation.
Yeah, you’re right, I’ll do it next time. For the moment, I have another post which shows the number of member getting merits and their ratio. You can see it in this link: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3071785

We really need to increase the number of merits in circulation. We should not create a situation where members do not have enough merits to send to a deserving person. I have seen merit giveaway threads where the member starting the thread had to lock it as his Smerits got spend on initial applicants. In order to increase the merits in circulation- two things can be done. First is increasing the number of merit sources. Admin added some but they are not sufficient. Another option is to increase the number of merits given to each merit source per month.
They are already into that. They are continuously looking for members who could be a possible merit sources.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2852479.msg31327729#msg31327729
There are even list of applicants which you can found here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2823944.0
There is another list but I can’t find it at the moment.

Average figures don't tell us the truth in some cases, especially if the distributions of target variables are not normal. Even for cases which have normal distribution, we have to present both mean and +/- standard deviations.
In contrast, for those cases which have non-normal distributions, we have to use median and interquartile range.
I will highly appreciate anyone help to transfer data from the forum to excell, which I can use Stata software for analysis.
Thank you for your appreciation, comments and suggestion.
I’ll better include those figures next time. By the way I sent a PM to you for the Excel version of the file. Happy Analyzing!

47  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If bitcoin owner die. It means bitcoin also lost forever? on: March 08, 2018, 10:19:55 AM
Nope, the bitcoin will remain to the exchange. Since there are no rules or law that govern about it. If it is a fiat the bank given a span of time will report it to the government and the government will be the owner of the fiat. In my country and if I am not mistaken it is about ten years. But bitcoin is not under the control of central bank nor the government, thus the bitcoin's new owner will the wallet company. If you own the wallet company, I hope you will not wish to happen something like that.
48  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Opportunity to sell for bitcoin on: March 08, 2018, 09:40:15 AM
If there are buyer who are willing to pay by bitcoin I am more than glad to accept that kind of payment. I have just read a while ago that there are cars, motorcycle that are sold using bitcoin in India. The car dealers didn't accept those bitcoin directly but there is a thirdparty company that process the transaction for them. It seems like there is a PayPal like company which focus on crypto to fiat processing. Going back to your question, I imagine that if I will setup a garage sale, there is a huge QR code of my bitcoin address or maybe I will print a QR that contain my address and the price of the item.
49  Other / Meta / Merit Stat from theymos data on: March 07, 2018, 03:39:51 PM
I create these charts based on the post of theymos seeking for further analysis of data.

Here you go: https://bitcointalk.org/merit.txt.xz

Similar to trust.txt.xz, it'll be updated weekly. It will show only the last 120 days of data; someone else should archive the old ones if you want them.

I am especially interested in analyses of this data which could point to sub-communities where the initial sMerit is exhausted, and new sources are necessary, and people who might be good merit sources.

Edit: Note that for a little while I had user_to and user_from as names, but I decided to change it to IDs.

I do hope that these charts will give further information about the Merit System. Unlike before, I try to provide my analysis based on the following chart; It will great if intelligent forum members out there could further explain these charts and give review if ever I missed something.
Before anything else, the rank is based on February 27 rankings.

The first chart is all about sMerit send by a group of users from January 24 to March 1; it clearly shows that more people are excited to use their sMerit two days after its implementation. Legendary top at sending Merits this is due to the fact that they have more sMerit than the lower ranks. But there are days (8 days) which Hero Members gave most Merits than Legendary, this is synonymous with Full Member and Sr. Member; which there are 16 days Full Member sent most of sMerit than Sr. Member.

But as time goes by, these sMerits have been exhausted, or people gradually slow down in giving sMerits. Let’s take for example the Legendary members who give a total of 3,131 sMerits on Jan 25 down to a total of 233 on March 1 which is 97% decrease. Below is the table of sMerit sent decrease per rank:

It is notable that Hero Member decreases their rate of giving sMerit at almost 98%, while on the other hand Jr. Members only decline by nearly 94%. Maybe because of Jr. Members are not given sMerit to share with others. The results seem disturbing that is why I created this second graph which shows the Moving Average of sMerit since its inception.

The graph shows that the Average sMerit gradually decreases day by day. The highest moving average (6,796) peaked at Jan 25 while the lowest (2,394) is marked on March 1. From Jan 30 to Feb 13 the average decline between five to three percent (5-3%) per day. Moreover, on Feb 14 to March 1, the average decline per day shift between two or one percent (2-1%). These indicate that sending sMerit is pretty much stable enough or there are lacking sMerit to send. If the latter is right and the decrease remains at 2%, the theoretical moving average 1 sMerit per day will be reach on March 2, 2019.

After seeing the continuous decline, I go back to the data and check what could be the cause and possible solution to negate the phenomenon. Thus, I chart all the senders, and these is what I see.

The chart shows that most of the sMerit sent came from the Legendary, and the least came from the Administrator. If you are thinking that the Administrator is not sending enough, you should probably ask the question, how many Administrator are there? Thus, I counted the unique account for each rank or position and ended up this table below:

The table shows that the Administrators are working hard to send sMerit to the forum members. They are the most generous sMerit givers followed by the Staffs. However, I have found that people in a Member rank send sMerit less than for those who are in Jr. and Newbie rank. This could indicate that they are saving their sMerits. And I just though that, I am one of them. Lol. And by the way, just round up those average to represent actual sMerit.

The next question that runs in my mind is the time most of the sMerit were given.

The chart shows that most of the sMerits are given during 8 AM up to 12 PM forum time. It is 16 hours long of sMerit giving, which peaked during 3 PM and plunge during 4 AM. Do this mean forum member from Western give most of the credits compare to Southern? I think more demographic info of users could draw a conclusion in this matter.

I also tried to figure out which day of a week got the most number of sMerit

The chart shows that most of the sMerit are sent during Thursday and Friday; This increase is probably the effect of the two days sMerit sending frenzy (Jan 25 & Jan 26).

I hope this post helps, comments and suggestion are very more welcome.

Hola forum members, take a look at this Merit Ratio stat. Hope it helps.

Another stat created for the forum members. Just like before, I am just doing some art and number, you could help me draw the conclusion; and then again comments and suggestion is very much appreciated.
52  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Criminality and Bitcoin on: March 05, 2018, 04:39:52 PM
The news seems legit and correct, but I assumed that bitcoin is currently used on both good and bad activities. In the bitcoin early years, it is mostly used on illegal activities than good activities, it is just mean that as time goes by, there are increasing number of people that use bitcoin in good and bad. The problem is just what is the ratio of both, but it seems that most of bitcoin transaction is for the betterment of others rather than its opposite.
53  Economy / Economics / Re: Why most bitcoin users from good economies countries? on: March 05, 2018, 03:58:00 PM
I never thought that there are thousands of bitcoin atm across the globe, I can’t just imagine how big and supportive those company that are setting up those machines. I think that statistics can’t be the basis on the number of bitcoin holder in a specific country. Remember, there are thousands of crypto, some countries maybe focus on a specific coin that is why there are few bitcoin holders, or even if there are many bitcoin holders, the area where they are living is relatively small that a couple of atm will suffice the population. Japan is more developed country than Austria as I think of, but still they only got 11 machines.
54  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will the price be stable? on: March 05, 2018, 03:40:50 PM
There is a law of supply and demand which govern most things that are sold to market and bought by consumers. When the last bitcoin is mined (that would be a far more years to come) the price could fall hard for a while, but after that the people will realize that what they are holding is a precious coins that only a few millions were been made and no one could ever created one again. It will trigger the price to go up again and way way more higher until to the point no one could ever tried to buy one.
55  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we share our knowledge to the other people about bitcoin??? on: March 05, 2018, 03:03:12 PM
Hola! There are numerous ways to share your bitcoin knowledge to others, the two most major split that suddenly struck to my mind is all about money. You can share your knowledge for free and you can share your knowledge for a fee. Just like what others do when making a youtube video, if they are a youtube partner, they help other people thur information they tell in the video and earning from it. But I think the most effective way to teach is thru physical contact, by then it increases the question and answer level which is important in learning.
56  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoins hit 30K before the end of this year? on: March 05, 2018, 02:47:05 PM
Nice assumption you got there, I think it is possible to reach that price point. I agree with you by that price, but I think it could be much more higher like 35 or maybe we hope 40k. When I check bitcoin price charts it is always remarkable that during third quarter the price of bitcoin starts to increase and always peak at the fourth quarter in each year. Additionally, each year bitcoin price reaches a new high level, since 20k have been reach last year there is a huge possibility that it could reach a new level.
57  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do some government ban bitcoin? on: March 05, 2018, 01:28:24 PM
Yes, there are several topics here and across the internet about negative effect of bitcoin. Just like any technology out there, most of the people check first the positive it could bring and followed by the negative it could bring. Let say for example the mobile phone, some say it could trigger cancer because of radio frequencies but, look around, there are lot of people just ignore the cons and embrace the positive effect. I hope that kind of phenomenon would also happen to bitcoin.
58  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: i hav 0.5 btc ... on: March 05, 2018, 12:49:20 PM
Then you are just in time for the MOONLITE ICO, hurry you have 16 days more left at the time of this posting. But let be tell you something about Moonlite, they are startups which focus on mining crypto using a green technology and by that they is possibly the first one who help people engaged into mining at the same time promoting a greenier future. Some ICO promise a good return but the question is how can they do that, in Moonlite, they will mine crypto which means a more profit for the investors. Go check them out see the links below this post.
59  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why are so many people against bitcoin? on: March 05, 2018, 12:31:15 PM
Who are these people you are talking about? Because commonly I see two groups of people who hate bitcoins; The first one is the government, they don’t mean to hate bitcoin, they just want to regulate the unregulated currency. But they can’t get the point that if the government control bitcoin, then the main essence of being autonomous currency is gone. Second group I see are the fiat investors, they hate it, said it is a fraud because people are shifting to invest in crypto rather than in their own company.
60  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can the online Casino industry help Bitcoin? on: March 05, 2018, 12:13:51 PM
I do hope it helps, but on the other side it seems the online casino will soon start to create their own coin that could be another child coin of bitcoin and soon once concrete enough and use by many will be start to be listed in trading firms and eventually be mark as another bitcoin opponent. If the existing online casino will just accept bitcoin, it could definitely help bitcoin and its community, but if the stated situation will be done, it can help in some other ways, like attracting people to use crypto.
