1  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: August 11, 2014, 10:54:43 AM
If nothing else, AM has the funniest Google translations, bar none. I believe people aren't adequately factoring comedy value into the share price.

Just wait till a real translation comes and we find out that AM really does consist of a 4 man team; friedcat, grilled cat, roast cat and baked cat

This was a good laugh.  Well done (and needed)   Roll Eyes

Yeah, that was awesome! I think it's funny how the google translator picks a different translation every time. And none of those translations are 'fried' Cheesy Cheesy Is there any reason why it picks a different translation every time?

Ouch, that hurts the soul Sad Sorry about your loss. I had around 3 BTC and my laptop fell in water(long story).

How did that happen??? Please elaborate! A water damage doesn't necessarily destroy the hard drive or the data on it. When was that Do you still have the drive and did you try rescuing the data on it???
3  Other / Off-topic / Re: Bitcoin logo glitched on: August 10, 2014, 06:07:44 PM
Wow, interesting. I guess that's what they call glitch art? You do this by corrupting a few bytes in the original file, don't you? How did you decide which bytes to corrupt and in which way did you corrupt them? Did you add something or just delete some characters???
4  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How BitMit used to work ? on: August 10, 2014, 06:06:35 PM
actually bitmit was probably one of the most successful businesses which ran into legal problems (I believe).

I thought their hotwallet were hacked by the hosting company employee and then decided to close it down.

Nah, I gues they gave a notice to all their users that they're about to close down and everyone was still able to withdraw their coins. This ain't another Gox or Bitfunder... It's a rare thing, in Bitcoin world, though Sad
5  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Best wallet on: August 10, 2014, 05:45:06 PM
bitcoin-qt because it is always the safest keeping money yourself, just don't let hacker took it..

The core Bitcoin-QT is relatively safe if you encrypt the wallet and are careful to avoid getting malware/trojans onto your machine.  If you are not careful then there's no more security having your keys in that file and accessible to whoever can access your backdoor.

You would need to keep the wallet offline if you're sloppy and download all kinds of "junk"

Yeah, but I think the biggest caveat of BitcoinQT is still that it has to download the whole freaking Blockchain! It's just too big nowadays. Therefore I really do prefer a lightweight client like MultiBit...
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are the best bitcoin faucets? on: August 10, 2014, 05:43:36 PM
They're pretty much all shit, but I like the one on primedice as you can gamble with it. There's new faucet levels just been released as well.

Yeah, PrimeDice has a pretty decent faucet, that's for sure! The only disadvantage would be that you can't withdraw the coins you get there, unless you are above a certain amount of BTC!
7  Other / Off-topic / Re: Tomorrow is my birthday! on: August 10, 2014, 05:42:19 PM
Man, I really want to know how his birthday went! I skimmed through the whole thread and everyone was just asking what he did, yet he didn't answer. Not cool, man. I hope your birthday was great, though!

Umm I'm just thinking: What if he partied too hard and something happened to him? Sad That'd be sad, man!

Yeah, I'm kind of disappointed, as well! Everyone wished him a happy birthday and he didn't even tell us how the party was. I don't think he got into an accident or something, though... Are you baked or something? Cheesy
8  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to earn 52000 BTC on: August 10, 2014, 05:41:02 PM
Look at this wallet        https://blockchain.info/address/1KiVwxEuGBYavyKrxkLncJt2pQ5YUUQX7f
I'm doing something wrong or I can not imagine how to make such unreal amount of BTC.
 You have any ideas? Huh

That's incredible! Isn't that just some kind of early adopter? I guess it's impossible to get that many coins nowadays as a single person, unless you are scamming someone. Man, the scams won't ever stop, will they?
9  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How BitMit used to work ? on: August 10, 2014, 05:40:06 PM
Surprising that none used BitMit over here !!! Undecided

No one use it because everyone is hoarding the coin.

Come on, you know that isn't right. A lot of people are using their coins, just because you don't doesn't mean the rest isn't either. People blame the price drops to companies selling all those coins they get from their customers, and yet you say people aren't spending their coins. Someone's gotta be wrong, here!
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to know about BTC mining on: August 10, 2014, 05:38:20 PM
Mining can be only profitable if you either invest a large sum, or speculate on new altcoins. It's difficult to pull off.

Yeah, most people rather just mine the latest coin and hope that people will buy their coins in a futile attempt to diversify their portfolio (in order to catch 'the next big thing')... Just take a look into the altcoins section! It's like a freak-bazaar!
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: which is the good site to get wallet? on: August 10, 2014, 05:33:56 PM
is coinbase.com is good site i have heard that site is not working properly...? is there any other site we can get good wallet without any problems......?

It's okay, but you shouldn't use it as a wallet. Use the original BitcoinQT client. Or some lightweight client (which doesn't have to download the whole Blockchain) like MultiBit or Electrum. Keep the control over your own coins or you don't really own them!!!
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: If reusing addresses is a bad idea then why... on: August 10, 2014, 05:32:50 PM
I think the whole thing about reusing addresses is just a precautionary measure to make it safer, but I don't think it's something you need to worry about.
Why?  Explain yourself.

I explained in detail above why address reuse is a bad idea and hurts Bitcoin, the idea of Bitcoin, the privacy and fungibility of Bitcoin, etc.

Do the same with your off the cuff comment.

I really don't see how it's realistically a problem at all.
Then you obviously do not know what the hell you are talking about.

Nah, it isn't that big of a problem in certain cases. If you just want to collect donations that you'd have to declare anyways, why not gather them in a single wallet. They didn't expect Bitcoin to become so big and just put up a single address... so what?
13  Other / Off-topic / Re: AVG free anti-virus on: August 10, 2014, 02:23:51 PM
it just flags up anything that looks suspicious it doesn't mean it is harmful so you still need to use your brain and decide whether its safe or not its just a type of warning system and not something which just stops everything.

Yeah exactly. Also it works best if it 'knows' the viruses or the malware. I uses several intelligent ways of recognizing new malware, but this isn't completely safe. Definitely use your own brain if you're doing something Bitcoin related! And use 2FA!
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to know about BTC mining on: August 10, 2014, 02:22:48 PM
Btc mining isn't profitable, you should have thousands of $ in order to set up a mining farm, otherwise you won't earn anything.

Yeah, it basically is about pushing down the costs as much as possible. You need to have as little overhead as possible! Also, you need to have access to really cheap electricity! That's basically the key to still earn money from mining!
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Scammers Use Bitcoins??? on: August 10, 2014, 02:21:41 PM
Hello,

I was just wondering: I am planning to buy something of a person online using Bitcoins, but what if he doesn't send me my item?
To me, a Bitcoins-dummy, a Bitcoin wallet seems like some sort of anonymous bank account because you can just fill in a fake name etc.
Now what if I buy something of this person, and he doesn't send the item to me, how can I report him or how can I know who he is? Is there a way I can use his BT address to see who he is?
I'm just very cautious as I don't want to be scammed.

Thank you very much,

Regards

It's very difficult. Purely from knowing their BTC address, there is effectively no way of telling who they are, if the address hasn't been used before and that use can be connected to a certain person! You could try to follow where the funds are going, but if they go into a mixer... good luck!
Yeah, using an escrow seems like the best solution for this!
16  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How BitMit used to work ? on: August 10, 2014, 02:20:21 PM
I have read that BitMit was a good marketplace. I'm unfortunate that it was closed before I use it. Can anyone, who has the experience of using BitMit, please tell me how the product delivery tracking used to work on BitMit ?

What do you mean by product delivery tracking? It was basically an eBay-like site where you could sell or buy/bid things and buy them with Bitcoin. You first send your Bitcoins to an escrowed wallet on the site, and the funds were 'frozen' if you bought something. If you received the goods, you could 'unfreeze' the funds and they would go to the seller. In case of a delivery not arriving, BitMit would have to settle the conflict.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 0.2 FEE!!!! ? am i missing something? on: August 09, 2014, 06:04:24 PM
did i just lose a .2btc transaction because the fee was set at .2btc?

Aww man, I'm so sorry reading that!! Things can be confusing in advanced settings, yeah... Better just stick to the regular send-feature! I once almost screwed up with those long Bitcoin addresses. Mixed up a few numbers or letters. It was already pretty late and I was out partying!
It is really not possible in practice to mess up typing a BTC address. Your wallet program would likely not allow it, as if you make a typo it would most likely show up as being an invalid address. What could happen, and does somewhat frequently happen is you could copy the incorrect address to send the funds to. This is a similar but different problem that the OP had, as the OP setup the TX so too big of a fee would be given to the miners.
I think the OP's situation is an important lesson of the importance of attention to detail when using BTC.

Yeah it's those little things that people who know Bitcoin and know how to use it don't get. The normal person on the street wants something to be easy and safe. If it was possible to pay more than you intended to pay with your Credit Card, people would freak out as well!

Sure, but BTC is more like cash. Irreversible.

if you drop a stack of 100$ notes when going out, they are gone.

If you pay someone too much and he is not cooperative, the money is gone.

I don't see the harm, but yes, everything could be more user friendly!

Yeah, sure. But that's exactly the thing. People want the security that Credit Cards offer them. I think they also still just have to learn to be more careful when it comes to Bitcoin. They shouldn't believe everyone and just send BTC to some address.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am doing a reserch about Bitcoin, please help!!!! on: August 09, 2014, 05:58:18 PM
Thank  you guys

You're welcome! It's a great thing that you're interested. I hope you're not about to show Bitcoin in a way that's bad for it. Showing the negative sides, dangers or caveats is okay, but I don't think it's very smart to just shun it and write it off as a stupid pyramid scheme. What do you think about Bitcoin up to now?
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Analysis of Bitcoin Adoption in a Physical Marketplace - Face 2 Face Transaction on: August 09, 2014, 05:56:55 PM
For face to face transactions, confirmation time is one hurdle that i can think about.

Nah, it really isn't that big of a problem. If you're transacting really big amounts, you have to wait for at least one confirmation, yes. But if you're doing small amounts, you're fine just making sure the transaction isn't an obvious double spend. This only takes about 10 seconds. Trusted members of some website would be stupid to try and scam someone with an attempted double-spend!
