6  Economy / Collectibles / Re: PCGS now grading Casascius coins? on: June 23, 2022, 11:06:24 PM

ANACS no longer grades cryptocurrency themed coins/tokens, but still available for normal numismatic coins

i still find anacs to be my favorite in terms of boxing style and i think it is a real shame that they have discontinued the service for cryptocurrencies Tongue
have a lot of anacs graded coins in my collection and what else comes me not in the house Grin

same. it's very much a personal preference as i know a lot of members here prefer the ICG slab. the wavy edge slab design looks a bit kiddish to me personally but any slab is better than no slab imo.
7  Economy / Collectibles / Re: WTB 10 BTC Casascius on: June 22, 2022, 10:20:56 PM
The worst part is one of these beauties was just peeled less than 10 days ago....

https://casasciustracker.com

Had they only known about this forum im sure a deal could have been worked out. But in the same vein that just makes whomever owns one that much rarer. Good luck and I hope you find a seller Blu. And as always OG...gorgeous set you have there.

Cheers,
iBHK8

agreed but it's no longer a no brainer as the work involved to securely facilitate the transaction, whether through escrow or not, is non-trivial and i can see most people not wanting to risk 300k to save even 30k. esp with standard mail insurance covereage not even approaching that level.
8  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [Article] Stacks Bowers at it again on: June 17, 2022, 07:29:41 AM
I just checked on the results of this auction. The three single post fork Satoris all went for more than $2000 each. Whoh

Awesome to see. The color/holo set really pop and until fairly recently you could get a whole uncirculated roll for auction on here regularly.
9  Economy / Collectibles / Re: BEWARE of FAKE CASASCIUS COINS on: June 02, 2022, 06:24:33 PM
As an unintended consequence, I believe the ANACS yellow slab (the one right before the jungle green ones) will eventually command a higher premium- not because they are the best or worst but rather because their slab colors correspond with and represent a timeframe.  And the yellow slab timeframe represents an earlier time, which IMHO would lead to a greater buyer confidence of not being a fake vs being slabbed nowadays or later due to the amount horseshit out there now and continuing.  ICG might have some potential in this regard as no Cas background vs Cas background on the blue header, which would also correspond with and represent a timeframe.  Not saying this guarantees past ones can't be fakes or things slabbed nowadays are all fakes, but folks like odds and probabilities that lean more toward not being fakes and will pay at least a slightly higher premium. Don't get me wrong, I am typically in favor of slabbing due to the protection and preservation offered.

I agree. Having an effective bounded timestamp for provenance is valuable. Also it was reflective of a world where you were mailing hundreds to thousands of dollars of coin to get graded, not tens of thousands or more. Much higher risk / lower chance that would happen today. I don't believe ANACS ever offered walk-in grading. Seems like ICG/PCGS do case-by-case.
10  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTB] Casascius 1 BTC Gilt on: October 14, 2021, 04:52:48 AM
I want one too, I just don't have 1.30ish BTC laying around. Maybe after dogecoin goes to $20 each I will pick a couple cas up.

i suspect the low circulating supply of these will drive a higher price than 1.3 in this market

12  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Is 2011 unredeemed 1BTC Casascius worth the hassle of selling? on: August 19, 2021, 04:06:10 AM
I'm a noob, and haven't dove into the crypto world yet.  This week discovered a forgotten about relic given to my spouse in 2012...a 1BTC Casascius.  (we had no idea what it was at the time, put it in a drawer and forgot about it.)  Selling it whole seems stressful in a realm I don't know what I'm doing.  Seems easier to just peel.  Is it worth the hassle to sell? (ie. would I make enough extra and is there a market?)

my personal opinion is that its worth selling if its silver/gilt silver or already slabbed. if its a brass, unless you have a local in-person sale, prob not worth the hassle of worrying about shipping/escrow/etc. i think market is like 1.05-1.09 per brass casascius (haven't check so please DYOR). if you redeem you get like ~1.02 with the forks.
13  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Question: What is going to protect authentic physical bitcoins? on: July 14, 2021, 04:22:51 AM
Grading companies don’t authenticate these products as there would be no way to do so with many of the small makers involved, they grade it’s condition. It’s likely this misconception that has them refusing to further grade crypto coins. I doubt it would have been hard to get a fake graded a few years ago. People did used to address this concern with signed chains of ownership and dealing only with trusted members. I always thought at one point reputable sellers with long held collections would be a coveted premium, but we aren’t there yet from my experience.

I agree completely with OG here. When I first joined the forum I had lurked for a bit prior and when it finally came time to buy I made sure to buy from solid well known members with good reputations for doing business. As I continued to buy the reputation of the sellers only became more important to me over time. I don't know if this will matter for certain in the future but I certainly know it can't hurt.

iBHK8

Yes, but anti-tamper slabs are also valuable for time stamping. For example, there have been no great fakes of Casascius coins even to this date. So if you are buying a slabbed Cas from say 2018, and it looks like a Cas from any visible observations, and firstbits check out, it's likely to be real. Same can't be said for raw Cas in the future say if some compelling fakes come out. Provenance and chains of custody are great, but I don't see it as an OR but an AND situation. Also slabs do a good job at preserving the coins and preventing the urge to touch your coins Smiley
14  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Question about loaded coin denomination. on: July 13, 2021, 07:06:21 PM
I like the Satori token load of 0.001 BTC. A bit more than pocket change today and could be a nice vacation in a few years.
15  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Question: What is going to protect authentic physical bitcoins? on: July 13, 2021, 03:34:16 PM
Is seems like cheapo knock-offs are multiplying and that non-loaded tokens are screwed. The funded coins at least have the blockchain as an authenticator. With ANACS out of the game maybe IGC gets serious and doubles down with more service? Maybe something new needs to arise to help validate and preserve the value that designers are creating?

I think there will be more value accrued to the graded/slabbed coins that have provenance that they were graded early on / well before known passable fakes come out (whenever that is).
