2681  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 28, 2013, 02:23:20 PM
That's what I thought but then last night I checked the update and they were only on feb 2nd.  So they supposedly worked all weekend and then all day yesterday and only moved like 2 days on the jalapeņos.

For January they were moving 7-10 days in 1 single day, so I'm not sure what happened.

It's likely due to volume of orders on paydate. Lots of folks presume march/april was the biggest rise in orders, and that could be the case, but nobody knows the actual volume of orders by paydate. BFL claims despite what seems to be slow progress by day, the volume itself was more than prior.

"claims"

I didn't even order a rig or single or little single or anything, but just seeing how slow they're progressing makes me cringe... Also makes me think either very few were ordered, or they're hitting some sort of limit when trying to push things out the door.

It's nice they show the paydate being processed.. but they really should also show unit count as well. There's nothing to be hurt by doing so, but by hiding the count they're just increasing speculation. It would also be nice to be able to see any rise or fall in volume of products shipped and volume of supplies purchased in comparison to new money coming in (ie, the Monarch preorder).

Haha glad to see the responses. I knew someone would figure this out, just didn't know it would be me.
2683  Other / Off-topic / I have solved BFL's time estimate problem.. they weren't lying! on: August 26, 2013, 09:42:59 PM
We've all seen the estimates for quite awhile now.. 2 months here... 5 months there.. etc.. The thing is, we incorrectly presumed Earth months.

I got to thinking about it, and their backlog and logic is astronomical.. therefore, If you factor their time as being based on Mars or Jupiter, it makes much more sense. Mars months are about 2x our months, and Jupiter months are close to 12x as long as ours.

This makes total sense now  Grin

That's one of the points I've made before.. BFL should provide something in return for the delay. I've had some products delayed to me before and the vendor--as a measure of good faith--issued me coins to cover the time lapse. That was fair and decent. BFL could do the same since they have some 500GH units burning steam, or they could throw in extra hashing.

*Could*

They'll continue to remain around as long as folks send them money.
2685  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: StrongCoin key leak. on: August 22, 2013, 02:06:47 PM
1. It was possible to change the id in a URL and see another users encrypted key. That is now fixed.

You're an idiot however, and that's not fixable. Who codes like that?!

Here's the most valuable question in this thread: Who's the babe in your profile pic??
2686  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 22, 2013, 03:15:21 AM
I think Vlad and I have a lot in common aside from mining.

For what it's worth, the govt can do anything it wants though, along the lines mentioned, forealsies. It's against the most basic ancient-human form of exchange: Bartering. Anyone who thinks it would let a type of goods-payment-exchange stand when it doesn't want it to stand, is silly.

Whenever the world banks decide to stop using the USD as the basis for everything, you'll see something happen, and suddenly they'll be like "oh snap the USD really is better, what were we thinking".

It's just how it's done. Like what someone said previously, it's not backed by anything legit, except nukes and the willingness to fight over the matter.

And, sidebar, it wouldn't take much for them to turn on heavy hashing power if for some reason they wanted to. Remember, these are the folks who purchased like 2,200 PS3's just for the computing power. If they want to buy all the 28nm asic chips available, they'll do that too.
2687  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 21, 2013, 11:38:21 AM
I doubt they'd even deliver a hard drive case in a timely fashion.
2688  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 19, 2013, 01:04:25 PM
You are correct, I'm in the Americas, so I'll be charged any customs at that point, but not VAT. I've never paid VAT or any other country's taxes for anything I've ordered from abroad. At most, I've paid a couple hundred USD for customs once on a much larger item.

Typically, I'm not even assessed customs fees for under 10k USD expendatures.
2689  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 19, 2013, 12:06:26 PM
Their 400GH unit is $6700 USD, plus around $130 for "next day" shipping.

meeh, really? this is my order:

Subtotal:                     $ 6,995.00
Shipping cost::                     $ 160.00
Czech Republic VAT:      $ 1,468.95
Total:                                   $ 8,623.95

so please, don't tell here anything about 6700+130 because it is incorrect information.

thanks.

I was speaking from my experience. I'm not charged VAT. You are. It's not incorrect to state that folks who aren't susceptible to VAT pay less than $8k. Everyone's situation is different. I believe this is explained in section 700 or 703 regarding goods being sold to non-EU/non-VAT customers.
2690  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs New 600GH "Mining Card" - RED FLAGS?!?! on: August 19, 2013, 11:35:10 AM

Ok, so why is KNC your favorite?

It's odd they want like $8,000 for a 400GH pre-order and it doesn't even have a PSU.  I know they're in Europe and PSU's are heavy but still.  At that money a unit should be turn-key.  Just saying and especially now that BFL is selling a 600GH for $4995 and I have a strong feeling Cointerra will beat that.

Their 400GH unit is $6700 USD, plus around $130 for "next day" shipping. This is for their first major shipment group September-October drop date, after which (November-onward) their product line is being discounted to reflect the fact their R&D has been covered by the first batch of orders.

I believe they quoted $5000 shipped for a 400GH unit at that point, with another price drop after the turn of the year.

^ LOL

Totally burst out loud on that, I needed that.

Yeah it's bulky.. to dissipate heat. I guess BFL expects us to cook our breakfast on their cards to help dissipate heat. Because the fan won't do it.
Looks quite similar to a HD 7970 fan which will do over 300watts! Of its a problem then they can use the case from a hd 7990 which will do twice that.

That's presuming they can use the same thermal dissipation design, which patents won't allow, and that their power specs do NOT exceed their current estimate.

BFL has a great track record for being spot-on with their power estimates. Afterall, promising 20% more output with 75% less power than the competition (who's having the chip designer design their PCB's) using the same architecture? Totally makes sense!

BFL, HOOAH!

Aside from any other flags being thrown, beware any company or individual who's best list of reasons for being better than the competition is to merely insult the competition.
2694  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How high will the difficulty be in 60 days? on: August 14, 2013, 01:13:02 PM
If some of the bigger rigs come online as projected, I believe it's likely you'll see number similar to this for a worse case scenario:

78 End of August
212 End of September
613 Last week of October

Less than worse case scenario:

78 End of August
162 End of September
241 Last week of October

Network speed has risen dramatically over the past few months, but we're just beginning to enter the "actual" rise. Growth will be exponential for a short time period, I'd wager you'll see the Network speed line shooting "almost straight up" for a short while sometime in the near future.

Some math whizz's have said they expect network speed to double or quadruple in the next 120 days. Not sure if I can bite into that, but it's certainly plausible.
2695  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has anyone actually got an ASIC based miner? on: August 13, 2013, 03:43:07 PM
When you say "excluding the USB Erupter", do you mean that there is an ASIC that's actually available and in stock? If so, where to get it (I'm in the UK).

Thanks

He's referencing the small USB stick which has an ASIC chip on it. There's a group buy on this forum where a guy (Sonic something is his name) has them for .32BTC right now, which is cheaper than anywhere else. They're fun.

Thanks for the reply.  What do you currently use / hash at (if you don't mind me asking)?

Unless my maths is screwed, at the current difficulty level / energy costs (0.2$ per kwatt) etc any ASIC based system (>1GH/s) seems profitable ($30month)?  Or am I missing something blatantly obvious?

If you had potentially $2000 to spend what would you opt for and expect GH/s wise and BTC/month wise?

I've got 7950's mining FTC/LTC right now, and am always exploring other currencies for fun. The 7950 isn't too expensive compared to the hash rate in return. It's Scrypt vs BTC's SHA, so it's a bit different game. I've got my 7950 config putting out 625KH stable with 63C* and 0 errors across millions of rounds. I've had it past 650 before but it wasn't stable.

I also have some of the ASICMINER sticks, they're just kindof fun to have, and they hash about 1-10% more than advertised.

I'm in these currencies for the long haul. We shall see how it goes.

Regarding BTC: Keep in mind, difficulty and network hash rate are going to constantly rise over time. So what makes X return now, won't make the same return down the road. AS someone else said on this forum somewhere, unless your equipment returns half of its investment cost within the first month, it likely won't break even ever.

Example: If you got a 25GH unit for $2k, and it arrived by September and it ran with 100% uptime for the whole month of September, presuming difficulty was 50M when you started running and the rise is 43% each time, you'd never break even. If you had 25GH for $1000 then you'd break even.

Check out mining.thegenesisblock.com to see estimation math over the course of time to help you out.

As for me, I'm one of the crazies who's hedging bets with KNC Miner. My reasoning is, like I said above, if you really want to ensure an even breakpoint, you want as much hashing power as you can get the first month, so I'm going to go big with a few of their units. They have a 100GH unit for $2500 I believe, which would (at current guesstimations) break even and make some money.

But there's no guarantees in life.
2696  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has anyone actually got an ASIC based miner? on: August 13, 2013, 12:52:46 PM
If you do enough research you should  know that answer already. To mine BTC, ASIC is what you want to be using--but unless you already have a big unit, or can get one for super cheap/free, you'll be fighting the difficulty level just to break even, much less make anything from it.

BFL and Terrahash aren't the only players either, keep your eye out. Not knocking them. BFL's products are really clean and sharp, but they're too little too late at this point (especially with a year of backorders still being processed). I'm going to get one or two in the future "just to have" as a momento, but I'll get them from ebay for dirt cheap when someone is sick of it not making money.

Good luck with your decision.

What stocks did you invest in, and were there any you'd rather have invested in?
