it's too early to dismiss the technology. It's a little like how websites used to be. At one time you had to hire a "pro" to have any kind of real presence on the web, but now we have facebook, wordpress, instagram, and countless others. Many businesses just have yelp and a facbook page and that's about all they need to get the word out. it's very different from 10 years ago. You don't really have to understand much except type, point, and click with these technologies. Bitcoin will get there too. What will it look like? Who knows, but I'm sure many entrepreneurs have ideas in their head about how to make all this easier. Give it time.

i think it fits with his personality - don't type too much, just get the message out to protect Dorian and go back to hiding. Leave it up to the whole world to figure it out.
In the meantime, all of this is great for BTC. Satoshi hunting could become like the public's never ending fascination with UFO's....

it's "who shot JR" all over again and all the news is completely smitten with the drama. You can't put a price on this kind of publicity - someone just sent me this... http://www.drudgereport.com/thank you Satoshi!

If the article is correct, it doesn't surprise me at all if he worked for the us government for a while, and then decided to make a financial tool outside of its controls after its financial meddling in 2008-9. His working with the gov't would give him detailed insights into their techniques of cryptography and hacking - what they can crack and what they can't. Anyway, it seems like someone with his knowledge would know how to make it so the gov't couldn't get their mitts on it. "Know thy enemy" comes to mind. Maybe I'm being a Pollyanna, but I consider it bullish once the shock effect is over.

obviously doesn't understand that bitcoin would help most of the people who vote for him.

Bitcoin is bigger than a protocol. The mt gox fiasco brought out the best and brightest in the community to defend BTC. It's also clear that lying and cheating will not hold up in the community for very long. This will be even more so as the bitcoin protocol is used to create decentralized exchanges.
Transparency isn't only the block chain, but it's the entire community checking itself so that it can continue to grow in trust. Reporters used to have newspaper scoops, but we now have people on reddit posting leaked documents with commentary by everyone - from new users to seasoned programmers. More and more the news media is coming to the community for the real "story". They didn't stay with the "bitcoin is broken" story for very long only because of the community interaction.
This is a self cleaning mechanism. That's why bitcoin gets stronger after each one of these instances. The system is finding its legs in an organic way.

if we are to compare Bitcoin to the early stages of the internet, that wasn't secure either. It took a few years before major security in browsers and websites were in full implementation. How did developers learn to make the internet more secure? Through attacks such as this. Noone went running out the door saying "this can never work!"
In the meantime, paper wallets.

bad, scary news sells - always has and always will. Remember Y2K? How many people spent thousands on canned food, bottled water, and toilet paper because of the stories in the media. The US media is particularly problematic when it comes to FUD. Americans love drama and pay for it with their hard earned dollars.
What kind of attention grabber would be the headline "Bitcoin bounces back after price dip!"

I'll be shocked if they give back people's money at this point. They know they are going under once they allow withdrawals. What would prevent them from just taking everyone's stash and disappearing? I doubt we can rely on the kindness of their hearts.

just because Google might make a currency, doesn't mean everyone would use it. How many people have an Orkut account?

Next monday.
Next Monday after the next? Or next Monday after the next and before the next Monday after the next next? Yep, that one. Could also be on Tuesday
