41  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Single Casascius Coins for sale on: January 13, 2014, 03:00:24 PM
Casascius Coins, Get your Casascius Coins here!

So if Mike (Casascius) announces he is done, prices will inevitably skyrocket. If he starts producing again prices will probably stay the same or decrease by 0.1 or so. So who is gambling on whether or not he is done?

I feel like holding the ones i've got for now. It just seems crazy to sell right now unless you need to

im torn personally. On one hand, they will become valuable with time.

on the other hand, with the BTC/USD rate relatively low at this time, you might get a higher multiple of facevalue (ie: 2.5BTC for a 1BTC coin) now then you will when the price of BTC is $7000
If what you're saying is that it's better to invest in bitcoin itself than in the premiums of Casascius coins, I would agree.  If bitcoins go to $7,000,  a Casascius coin will not necessarily increase to $18,000.  I doubt that it would, but who knows?
42  Economy / Economics / Re: Would World War instantly destroy Bitcoin? on: January 13, 2014, 02:55:57 PM
A world war would not necessarily kill bitcoin.  As long as governments remain corrupt, bitcoin will flourish.
43  Economy / Economics / Re: So, nobody really gives a crap? on: January 13, 2014, 01:02:11 AM
People use what is easiest or the most profitable. Bitcoin is both in many areas. Doesn't matter what any given country or government does, it will keep growing because it is useful.
I agree 100%
44  Economy / Goods / Re: Casascius 2011 Gold Plated Bitcoin Bar 1000 BTC Redeemed for trade or sale on: January 13, 2014, 12:51:22 AM
(I dont expect someone to offer more than I paid)

Why buy it if you aren't going to make money?

Typical bitcoin person... He bought it for charity...

Then he turns right around look for offers for profit? On a account that has less than 10 posts? ...
With all due respect, you should not decry anyone who is seeking profit.
...considering that you are asking over $ 1 million for a redeemed Casascius token.
45  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [SELL] Selling 10BTC Silver Casascius coin, VERY RARE on: January 12, 2014, 03:03:13 AM
The coin is still for sale.
When you say "very rare"...?
How many non- gold plated silver 10 btc coins were made?
How many gold plated silver btc coins were made?

There are (I guess, source: http://casascius.uberbills.com/), a total of 441 ten BTC silver coins active. I guess that about 300 of them are these full silver ones. The thing that makes this non- gold plated coin more rare (thought there propably was more of these made than the gold plated ones,) that people don't sell these. By checking e-bay, I couldn't find a single one of this type of coin to be for sale. But I saw gold plateds...

I would be interested to see if anyone actually does know exact figures. I was under the impression it was roughly 50/50
It seems to me that if collectors are paying $20,000+ premiums for these coins that someone needs to ask Mike Caldwell just how many of each were made.

So let me try and understand this. He's wrong because he wants to change bitcoin. Yet your not wrong because you want to change the current financial system. How is there a difference? Your doing the same thing you claim he is doing.

And it doesn't sound like he's shoving anything down your throat, it looks more like he's being reasonable and intelligent and willing to discuss the topic like an adult, and it sounds more like you are trying to push some agenda you have

No, he's not trying to change the existing financial system at all ... we are trying to replace it entirely and give people an option to OPT OUT.

Something I notice no economists are offering or advocating for at present ... rather they spend a great deal of time trying to figure out how to keep everybody corralled into their sick facist financial system of control and monitoring, cash controls, border checks, sniffer dogs, criminalising cash ... the list is endless with examples of the restrictions of financial freedom to serve their fiat masters and their wrong, failed, sick economic theories.

Opt out in the future. Maybe.

No. We can opt out now. If you have little faith in bitcoin, then opt out 1% of your wealth. If you have great faith in bitcoin, opt out 99% of your wealth.

We can decide anytime to opt out as much as we like. We can also opt out to other coins.

Bitcoin will keep going up for several reasons.
The gross corruption of governments and banks will assure its permeation into every corner of the globe.
47  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 2011 1 BTC Error Casascius Coin 2.25BTC on: January 12, 2014, 02:53:48 AM
Misspelling of "Casascius" on the hologram.
Does anyone know how many misspelled coins were made?
My impression is about 3,000
That doesn't seem very rare to me.

About 3,500 1BTC brass coins have the error, I believe. Mintages are all over the place, for example, there are around 7,000 2013 brass 0.5s. Not sure on the count for 2012/2013 brass 1s.
Thanks for the information.

So the gold-plated coins are fewer, but the silver coins are harder to buy...
I personally think the silver coins look better.
50  Economy / Collectibles / Re: 100BTC Casascius bar S1 Hologram error--- 500BTC bar 1 of 2 ever made by Mike C. on: January 11, 2014, 03:46:13 PM
Here is a little guidance on price.....

A redeemed 1000 BTC bar sold for $8600, at the moment somewhere around 10 BTC.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Casascius-2011-Gold-Plated-Bitcoin-Bar-1000-BTC-Redeemed-/171207044206?pt=US_World_Coins&hash=item27dcbc2c6e

Thanks for the information.
That is still much higher than I expected for a redeemed token.
51  Economy / Economics / Re: How much does it cost to produce one Bitcoin? (Market Value Comparison) on: January 11, 2014, 03:39:32 PM
$984 BFL single 50GH provide 0.018 coins per day and 0.18 coins for the first 10 day period, at 20% difficulty increase, it will mine 5x coins of the first time period during its life time, which is 0.9 coins. Even excluding all the electricity cost, it will make average coin cost $1093
If what you say is accurate, the bitcoins are undervalued presently.  I can't wait until about 18 months from now when the blockchain reward is halved.

No ones "afraid" of bitcoin. There's your answer.

I’m afraid to sell, I think I hang in the wrong circles, and they never tell me when or why I should buy just encourage and justify why to sell.
I can't understand for the life of me where are all of the bitcoin sellers are coming from.  Everyone I know with bitcoins wants to hang on to them.

A good percentage of the coins available on the exchanges come directly from mining operations that must sell some percentage of their earnings in order to pay the bills.  This is easily checkable via blockexplorer.com, as those coins you just bought can be traced back to the coinbase transaction pretty quickly.
If that's true then those who are mining are losing money or breaking even.  Have you checked bitcoin difficulty lately?
54  Economy / Collectibles / Re: 100BTC Casascius bar S1 Hologram error--- 500BTC bar 1 of 2 ever made by Mike C. on: January 10, 2014, 07:19:53 PM
so the btc have been redeemed?

Then 100BTC bar is loaded still.

The 500BTC bar has been redeemed.

Thanks for asking Smiley

thats what i was trying to figure out why would someone pay that much for an empty coin and a gold plated one at that .. no btc means it would be more or less a paper weight ...
i have a few challenge coins from the military does that make them as valuable as only a few are ever handed out??
BayAreaCons obviousoly has no idea what makes something valuable.  Rarity is not the only criterion.  It's obvious that Casascius coins are gaining value as collectibles, but not nearly as much as this guy believes.  I doubt that he could get over 1 bitcoin for that redeemed bar.  That would still be a very expensive paperweight.

I am 100% sure he would get over 1.

I saw 2 or 3 redeemed 100 btc bars go on ebay for slightly over $200 each... that was about 2-3 months ago.  Perhaps the 500 bitcoin bar is much rarer.  Be that as it may, I would be curious to see what he could actually sell it for.  I think paying 1 bitcoin for it would be a poor investment, given the fact that in one year one bitcoin will probably be worth $5,000 - $10,000.

Please explain to me why anyone would pay money for a redeemed Casascius token.  I don't get it.
55  Economy / Economics / Re: Bots making price go down on: January 10, 2014, 07:13:07 PM
A perspective must be maintained.  Bitcoin has gained over 100 dollars per coin since January 1.  If that pattern continues linearly for this year, bitcoin will be worth over $4,500 by the end of the year.
56  Economy / Economics / Re: Why are economists so afraid of Bitcoin? on: January 10, 2014, 07:08:51 PM
Economics are worried it will work and prove something they believe is wrong.  Ignorance is bliss.  Many economists believe you need to keep creating money and the more money the better.  This would dent that argument.  I would think economics want to embrace it and see what happens with this experiment.  I only hope we get to see what happens and it doesn't get ruined by something like a 51% attack...
It's laughable to watch these naysayers sit in their ivory towers and predict the downfall of bitcoin.  There are going to be alot of people eating crow six months from now.

Just look at overstock.com launch today. They are taking huge numbers of bitcoins. Once that news spreads, other big players will join the party.

Yeah. I thought so, too. I even bought some BTC again last night. But WTF? Where is the God damn upswing? That it didn't happen clearly indicates, that the whole market is VERY nervous. Seems like everybody is waiting for the next bad news or at least until the China thing is over.

Very interesting times ahead. I am sure about that by now.

Good luck.
Be patient.
An upswing is imminent.
