41  Bitcoin / Mining / listed average speeds on Deepbit... on: June 02, 2011, 12:49:28 PM
they can not be accurate, I have a 5850 pulling 330+ MH/s and a 4890 pulling 100+ MH/s, yet I sometimes get 500+ MH/s average speed on Deepbit, then this morning I saw this...

how is the average speed calculated...?
42  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best PSU to buy? on: June 02, 2011, 12:45:24 PM
Should probably look more at important things like...
Max wattage
Efficiency rating
Number of rails
Amperage of each rail

More important than brand names and prices. Asking best brand and price is gonna get you 50 different opinions from 50 different people Tongue

I would actually look more at the continuous wattage, max wattage isn't sustainable in most cases and the number of rails doesn't matter...
43  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: anyone got 4 5830s in a machine? in a case on: June 02, 2011, 12:29:59 PM
1k is probably enough for 5 x 5830's, so I am looking at smaller PSUs:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

I think the above PSU would be sufficient for 3 x 5830, unsure about 4x

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153106

I am thinking either one of these would be sufficient for 4 x 5830

I wouldn't take the chance, four 5850s...? maybe, but 5830s use more power than 5850s and almost as much power as 5870s, if you OC them they'll probably use about about as much a quad 5870 setup, would you trust anything lower than a 1kw PSU with a quad 5870 setup...? I wouldn't...
44  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Overclocking GPU and Warranty on: June 02, 2011, 04:39:31 AM
1. Does it void the warranty to overclock a Sapphire GPU?

2. Is bitcoin mining a proper stability test for an overclock?

3. What are the upper and lower limits on GPU clock and memory clock for a 6950?

4. Is the greater risk when overclocking temperature or bricking the card?

5. What's the limit for a stable temperature for 24/7 operation?

1. No, so long as it is through software.

2. Furmark or the equivalent is better.

3. It's technically unlimited...you just have to try and see how high you can go without instability.

4. What? The only way you can brick the card is if you screwed up an unlocking process from 6950--->6970. You should be more concerned about potentially frying your VRMs if you try too hard of an overclock and insufficient cooling. If you are going for high clocks, either put it under water or get a high end air cooler with proper VRM cooling (Thermalright Spitfire and its VRM cooler)

5. GPUs are safe up to 105c, but it's never recommended that you let it go that high. I generally like to keep my temps under 85, if it goes higher I will lower the overclock and continue mining.

#5 depends on the card really, some are meant to run hotter and can tolerate higher temps than others...
45  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Dual sapphire xtreme 5850's. How to adjust voltage & overclock? on: June 02, 2011, 04:34:38 AM
you can go to 950 core with no voltage adjustment.

Sure, if you want your PC to crash once you start mining.

not all cards are the same, just like some cpu batches are better than others, the same applies to video cards, my 5850 mines at 935 core with no voltage adjustment at all and stays around 60°, mine crashes at 950, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility that some cards may be able to do this at stock voltages...
46  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Best GPU for price on: June 01, 2011, 01:19:17 PM
he was ridiculously lucky to get that gpu at that price (just like I was lucky to get my i7 860 for $20 on craigslist because the dude thought it was broken), the gpu cost prices should be figured based on the actual prices at e-tailers...

right now it's easily the 5850...
47  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Need advise on mining components on: June 01, 2011, 12:28:08 PM

IIRC a 6850 is just a rebadge of the 5850, except it uses less power, it might not overclock as well and may have a few less shaders from what I've read, it should still be almost as good as a 5850 for mining though...
but it's not) according to the hardware compare table... in fact 6850 looks like slower than 5830)

yeah, just saw that, I guess what I read was wrong, the amount of shaders on that card is pitiful...lol, the problem is that 5850s are hard to find for a decent price right now (at least here in the states), the 5830 is cheap and performs well, but it's a power hog, if you're gonna use that much powah you might as well spend the extra, get a 5870 and almost double your MH/s too...

@wigsgiw 5830 is 8$ cheaper than 5850 - 280$ Smiley

strange... i bought 5830 for 126$ here in Russia Smiley and i can't find 5850 in shops... only 6850's

Woah! Decision made. In terms of the two cards - you could always run two power supplies, meaning you have the option of getting a cheaper / lower wattage power supply to run the 5770 maybe, and then use your 525W for the 5850... perhaps.

yeah, that is just crazy, here in the states a 5830 is about $110 (a sale just ended on a Sapphire 5830 for $90) while a 5850 is around $160...

Thank you for the answers Smiley

@JayC OCed core at 950 MHz gives me 170+ but the temperature is too high - 82C and I want to keep it <80. Maybe if i improve the airflow inside the box i will be able to keep the core at 950MHz 24/7 but still the difference is not that big...

I'm not from US either. I'm from Bulgaria, Eastern Europe and here local dealers sell 5850 for $288 Sad That's why im currently looking to buy used card and a power supply. And... yeah maybe I will stick with my 5770 + hopefully 5850 as this will be the cheapest mining upgrade.

1. your motherboard DOES support crossfire, why do you think it doesn't...? X38 is an Intel chipset, Intel chipsets = crossfire, Nvidia chipsets = SLI, but yeah, you don't NEED crossfire in this case...

2. you don't need an 850w PSU for crossfire, a good quality 550w to 650w will be fine, something like a Corsair TX650, the key with PSUs is the quality, a reputable brand will usually output the rated wattage, a crappy cheap brand will usually not output the advertised wattage...

3. add this to the end of your command line and your MH/s should jump over 200+  " -v -w 256 ", without the quotes of course, with that you should be able to lower your OC some and still get a decent MH/s, also, if you're not, set your fan to 100%...

5850s seem to be the sweet spot for mining and I think the vendors are catching onto this, you know, the whole supply and demand thing, prices seem to actually be going up on 5850s instead of going down on them like it should with an older card, the 5850 also uses less power than a 5830, even though the 5830 is the least expensive of the three 5800 series cards, it actually uses about as much power as a 5870 but gives you half the hashes, so in the long run the 5850 is the best card by far of the three...

I run my 5850 at 925/500 and get 330+ MH/s, this is my main miner on my kids' computer so it mines about 20 hrs a day, I need another card quick though, my other card is a 4890 and it uses a lot of power, runs very hot (shadercore runs at 100°+) and only pulls 90+ MH/s, not very efficient at all, even a 5830 would be an improvement...
51  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining with multiple machines on: June 01, 2011, 09:44:54 AM
you may also want to list the gpus that you have access to also, then we could tell you if it's even worth it, if they're Nvidea gpus it may not be worth it, even top of the line Nvidea cards get stomped by mid level ATI cards...
52  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / 4870 and 4890 only mine using cpu... on: May 26, 2011, 01:19:38 PM
0% gpu load on each, I'm mining on another rig with a 5850 and it stays pretty much at 98%-99% gpu load, I'm using poclbm.exe for each rig but the one I tried both 4800 series cards in just won't load the gpu at all and just mines with the cpu...

any suggestions...?

 Huh

EDIT: using Windows 7

EDIT2: fixed...
