81  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Advice regarding setting up a small bitcoin scholarship fund on: February 04, 2014, 01:35:22 AM
OK... so this isn't really going so well.  Roll Eyes I had dinner with a good friend tonight and her first question is, "What is this scholarship thing? And what is bitcoin?" Sigh... But I realized that for the majority of regular folks who aren't like me, they really have no idea. And that isn't all that surprising I suppose.

Anyway, I still only have two donations for the scholarship.  Grin

However, I am not posting here to ask for donations. What I would like to ask for (beg for if I'm to be totally honest) is for you guys to go to the page and like it and share it. Please!!! I really want to try and get this going but I just don't have enough friends on Facebook and I hate to harass them. So since you folks are all bitcoin enthusiasts, could you do me this one favour? Like and share the page? It's for a very good cause after all and any increase in awareness would be a good thing, right?

Thanks. Smiley

I requested a refund from Minersource via e-mail a couple of hours ago, still awaiting a reply. *crossing fingers* With my luck, they'll honor the refund and then I'll regret doing it come May when they start shipping! LOL Also, if this is some big scam (which I'm not 100% buying to be honest), they certainly won't be giving any refunds... I guess we wait and see.

If I do get a response from them, I'll share it here.

has anyone that placed an order on the OLD Minersource site have there order moved to the new data base and had an account opened for them and received an email confirmation?

The link that was at the bottom of the new site is gone so i can't check my order on the old data base and I've never received a notice of a new account being opened either

Same here...

86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Advice regarding setting up a small bitcoin scholarship fund on: January 29, 2014, 03:46:25 AM
Greetings folks,

I'm from a small rural community in New Brunswick, Canada. I'd like to set up a small community scholarship fund for our High School graduates that would pay out in Bitcoin in June. The community is fading, as are many rural communities in the Province but there is also a lot of pride that goes back generations. Most of the families here are not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination but they are good people who work hard and want the best for their children and the community.

Even so, I suspect that just through Facebook, I could set up something simple using QuickBT that would allow people of the community to donate up to $50 to the fund with a target allocation of $1000 (or 1 bitcoin). Then, come June, I could present the award at the Graduation. Not only would this be a fun exercise for the community but it would have the added benefit of getting people involved and familiar with bitcoin without having to go through the hassle of setting up a wallet.

Word would spread, it's a small town and people would talk. To me it's a win/win and fun to boot! And depending on how much is raised, the scholarship could be awarded to multiple students rather than just one. And as far as the Graduates go, the young'uns are ALL familiar and comfortable with the idea of a virtual currency, most of them grew up playing video games and MMO's, so yeah, they get it. Smiley And another benefit would be publicity, for my little town and for bitcoin!

So I'd like your guidance in some aspects of the set-up. Keeping in mind that I want to keep the structure as simple as possible. The first step would be to set up a secure wallet for the donations, I'm thinking Bitcoin Armory? Then set up a group in Facebook that explains the idea and provides instructions on how to use QuickBT to donate. I'd also have to layout how the funds would be awarded so I need to think on that a bit. I hesitate to limit the recipients because it sort of goes against the non-hierarchical spirit of bitcoin, but I'm not sure how far to take it. I also want to make it clear that the fund is available for the public to see at any time through the blockchain and that all transactions can be seen going into and out of the fund and if any funds come out, well, they know where I live so... And for those who want to remain anonymous, they can, or they can post that they've contributed.

Anyway, those are some of my initial thoughts, any feedback or advice on the set-up would be VERY much appreciated!

If these developers can figure out a way to seamlessly integrate this coin into the framework of Smart Grid technology, well, it doesn't take much to see that the future of this coin could be explosive.

Finally an altcoin I'm actually willing to mine! I started last night, as soon as I saw the Coindesk article.

I solo-mined for a few hours and actually got a block! WOOT! But I'm pool mining now in the cryptopoolmining pool and have accumulated more. Wish I had more power but meh.

Still no official thread here for it?

I saw this come across Coindesk last night, nice article! http://www.coindesk.com/solarcoin-awards-coins-solar-power-generation/

Anyway, I got excited about the idea of this and started to solo mine on my laptop last night, just through wallet mining, and found a block! LOL I'm the proud owner of 100 solarcoins this morning. Smiley

92  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What happens to a solo miner... on: January 17, 2014, 12:52:17 AM
My point is, with the puzzle difficulty getting higher and higher, wouldn't we need equipment that actually solves a single hash faster? Or is that not a factor?
What matters is the GH/s display in your miner software. Nobody cares if that is achieved by massive parallelisation or massive increase in clock speed (which means solving a single hash faster). Over the long run, both will happen.

Right, the time-to-hash for any single hash attempt doesn't matter that much. Everyone is in a race to find a nonce that solves the criteria for the difficulty of the current block, and everyone is attempting different nonces. If everyone counted from "0" and incremented from there, and there was a fixed integer that solved the "puzzle", then the fastest hasher would always win. But that's not how it works. The nonce that will solve the puzzle depends a lot on the header of the block you're solving, which is different for each node, plus I suspect each node starts at a random nonce position in an attempt to not duplicate work with other nodes.

So in simple terms, assuming I understand this correctly (which I admit may not be the case... Smiley) is that the node with 1 GHs versus the node with 100 GHs is like a guy buying one lottery ticket versus a guy buying 100 lottery tickets?

Maybe the person designing the barcode did it just to mess with Christian-nutjobs small brains.

Excellent troll..

Yes, at least there is some logic to that.

Here is the email I got this morning:

Quote
De-Listing Questions:
Terms and Definitions:
Registered Shares: The share certificates to be issued represent non-voting common shares with rights to receive dividends in either Canadian Dollars or Bitcoin.
Virtual Shares: Shares of symbol VTX on havelockinvestments.com De-list Date:  Dec 31 2013 4:00pm(MST)
HVL: havelockinvestments.com

Dividends:
No promise was ever made to issue a dividend on a specific date. In my last announcement on Oct 1 2013 I indicated that the next dividend update will occur by March 31 2014(Q1 2014).  At this time I cannot give a specific date for when a dividend will be declared or paid.  Any registered shareholder of VirtEx will be able to accept dividend payments in Canadian dollars or Bitcoin. There are no special classes of dividend exempt shares.  If a dividend is declared or paid, the non-voting common shares as defined above and in this de-listing would qualify.

Questions:
1) Havelock stated the sale of 10,000 units was for 10% of the company. This should mean as a holder of 200 shares that these certificates will equate to ownership of exactly 0.2% of the company. Does this remain true?

Yes at the present moment, but the company may raise additional capital by issuing new shares in the future.

2) How do I become a registered Shareholder?

All shareholders as of the de-list date will be e-mailed on January 6, 2014 with instructions on how to become a registered shareholder. There will be no administration fee for this service.

3) Why should I become a registered shareholder?

To reflect your ownership interest in the company.

4) Why is your prospectus no longer posted and/or available?

We removed it as the first step in the de-list process.

5) What are the transfer rights of my registered shares, can I sell them to others?

Share transfers will be restricted in accordance with applicable law.

6) Will the de-list process require me to pay or report capital gains?

Consult your professional advisor. Generally however capital gains are not incurred until a disposition has occurred.

7) Can you give more detail as to why you decided to de-list?

The virtual shares are being traded in an uncertain regulatory framework as it pertains to an Alberta Corporation.  This uncertainty complicates and delays any additional investment and/or partnership. We intend to grow this company and pursue partnerships and investment offers and the conversion of virtual shares to registered shares is a necessary step to make that happen.

8 ) When will financials be issued and to who?

Annual financial statements will be issued to all registered shareholders and are planned to be released by March 31, 2014.

Thank you for investing with Havelock Investments!

96  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: CEX Profitability: An Analysis on: December 16, 2013, 02:27:59 PM
I started with 0.5 BTC on November 30 and now have 0.77 (if I sold my GHs right now at .07). I mine for about 8 days, sell before the difficulty, put a reasonable buy order in at a lower GHs price and start the cycle again. I have done a bit of day trading in there with 1-2 of my total GHs.

I do agree with your analysis in theory. In practice it is a different matter. I reinvest the earned NMC back into GHs on a daily basis and reinvest BTC earned on market dips.

I've noticed that the price can begin to slide before a difficulty change anywhere from 1-4 days prior to the change. I analyze the charts and try to pick a price to get out and a price to get back in. But it takes work and attention to earn a profit. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.
