Even in the event that an attacker gains more than 50% of the network's computational power, only transactions sent by the attacker could be reversed or double-spent. The network would not be destroyed.

LocalBitcoins.com will be sponsoring the hackathon, so we will have at least free refreshments and some snack/food Smiley Maybe also the contest winner names will be forged in the block chain for eternity!

Also if you have any project ideas etc., you can discuss it here. I have been toying with an idea of a open source bitmit-style marketplace, so people can easily start their own bitcoin-based marketplaces. It would be a web app using django_bitcoin library. However I'm still pretty open about what I'm gonna do, if somebody wants to team up with me, just send me a msg. I can do python, django, iPhone dev, also php and even .NET (although I'm not very happy doing those) Cheesy

Offline transactions means, if the buyer is offline they can send the transaction via Bluetooth to the seller. The user experience is (when it works) invisible - the MAC address of the sellers Bluetooth adapter is included in the QRcode and then the client can connect to it when sending coins without peering or discovery. The receiving side can then put the tx on the network and see if it comes back, thus checking its validity.

We're also looking at maybe letting the receiving side keep the transaction around in the wallet so if both parties are offline but trust each other, they'll broadcast it later when they have internet access.

We got pretty far, though the demo we tried to do was too flaky to really work. Once some bugs are fixed and a bit more code is written it should work pretty well, and the system can be a subject for potential BIP standardization.

Kudos! I'm all for that (or a slightly more general) standard! That would really reduce those connectivity issues and it should work for Spinner and other apps where signing happens on the phone as well Smiley
