Everything depends on BTC nowadays.. Every his movement are followed by all altcoins.. And Bitcoin is a very manipulating coin
If to choose about the safest i would say these are coins with the biggest market capitalisation as ETH NEO EOS
But again... market now is such unpredictable

Volatility is about liquidity and amount of money in an asset. As more money as less volatility
So in far far future when btc will be as common as credit cards I think it's very possible

Thay are much more variable
And of course they have smaller market capitalization and that's why their price can raise much faster then BTC

Market is changing fast
If you are holding, you are losing huge profits i think, because of volatility
You can sell high, then to buy another coin which is going to pump, sell it and re-buy your previous coin on deeps.
And in this way you can multiply your coins
So.. Hold maybe not so risky but of course much less profitable
