1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why don't we prune to scale? on: January 30, 2019, 10:39:36 PM
Wow these are a lot of answers, thank you very much!
So, I get that the miners could introduce a wrong hash of the utxo set, but I don't quite understand how that would be done without anyone noticing. So let's say we implement it in a way that miners first commit to a utxo set by including its hash in a block and n blocks after that ( choose a high enough n so that it is practically impossible to change that block ) we attach the utxo set to the block. This way when the hash of the utxo set is put into a block everybody could verify whether it is correct. If it's not nodes will reject that block, if it is correct nodes will accept it. Then when the utxo set is attached to the block n blocks after the one with its hash in it, nodes could delete the now obsolete blocks and the history can't be changed.

PS: If you know that these ideas have been discussed before, could you give me a source where I could find the discussion or a special term for such kind of proposal which I can search for?
2  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why don't we prune to scale? on: January 28, 2019, 10:01:44 PM
First of all, thanks for answering.
I am gonna expand my argument: The whole discussion about increasing the blocksize was about the resulting size of the chain and the resulting bandwith a bigger blockchain would cause, wasn't it? So, if we pruned and agreed on a valid state of the blockchain, wouldn't we be able to reduce the size of the chain and therefore reduce the caused bandwith? I see why just increasing the blocksize wouldn't be able to ultimately scale the bitcoin network but wouldn't we be able to get some on chain scaling going?
In other words: Why do we need full nodes when we could have an agreed on past and lite nodes?
3  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Why don't we prune to scale? on: January 28, 2019, 09:34:40 PM
So, I got into an argument with a friend and we were discussing on scaling problems of the blockchain.
As the blockchain gets bigger and bigger, why don't we just save the state of the blockchain (by which I mean all the utxos) every year and hash the preceding blocks, so we know that this is the correct state and erase these blocks afterwards?

I read your medium article and I really think it's an interesting project. Your website is loading very slow, though. ( I am located in Germany if it helps you to fix the problem.) Also, the dev console shows a 504 error for your jQuery. Maybe load it from a CDN?
5  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Easy Bitcoin QR Scanner | WalletWatcher on: May 29, 2018, 02:32:37 PM
This is something that is close to the solution I am looking for. I want a APP that scans the QR Code and then convert the

content to a Text file. Let's say you have tons of paper wallets and you quickly want to scan the Private keys of all the paper

wallets, while you are "offline" and then sweep the content to another address. This will come in handy when you have a lot

of paper wallets and you want to claim all these FREE forked coins. Most QR scanners are online... so this is a security threat.

Wouldn't scanning the private key with your phone compromise the security of your paper wallet?
6  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Easy Bitcoin QR Scanner | WalletWatcher on: May 29, 2018, 02:29:43 PM
Yes, some websites (pornographic) are blocked (due to my location & network) and I can't access crypto exchanges that are being operated within the US (restriction is from their side).
OK, so me hosting an extra server will most likely solve the issue. I'm looking into it. Smiley

Done Wink
Thank you very much  Smiley
7  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Easy Bitcoin QR Scanner | WalletWatcher on: May 28, 2018, 09:15:58 PM
Looks like it has something to do with my network (tried it with a VPN and everything works now).
Hmm.. that's strange. Do you know if some websites are banned in your network? Or did you change your location by using a VPN? I'm looking into setting up a server to prevent these problems, if it has to do something with region locking.

  • You might want to add a note on how to delete (swipe left) each address, within the app.
  • Perhaps, the currency change (BTC/$/€) can be applied automatically (instead of updating each individually).

Yeah, the swiping seems to be more intuitive for iOS users. On Android users are used to tapping and holding the item, don't they?

And yeah, good point about the currency change. I am putting it on my ToDo-List. Smiley

PS: I would love to get more reviews / feedback on the PlayStore. You would really help me out writing an honest rating there, if you don't mind. Smiley

Sounds like a nice application. Since I use iOS, I will not download it immediately. But as soon as I download it I will give you information about the application.
An iOS version will come out soon. I am currently waiting for the new generation of MacBooks to be able to code for iOS, because apparently you need to own a Mac to develop for iOS devices.
9  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Easy Bitcoin QR Scanner | WalletWatcher on: May 27, 2018, 08:11:50 PM
I did a test using an old device (running on Android 5.0.1) and there seems to be an issue for fetching the data (it just shows "0" for amount). For BTCitcoin it stays at "0" but for other coins, it's stuck on reloading.

A small suggestion:
- Make it in a way to automatically detect which coin it has saved, based on its address type (ATM, I have to choose it manually).

Could you tell me what address you were using? Does the btc donation address work?

To your suggestion: Can you 100% identify the coin through the address? I mean with all the new segwit etc. formats?
10  Bitcoin / Project Development / Easy Bitcoin QR Scanner | WalletWatcher on: May 26, 2018, 04:43:08 PM
I have made an Android app for scanning Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency address QR codes and showing their funds. I would love to receive some feedback on the app functionality and feature requests. You can download the app for free on the PlayStore https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.walletwatcher .

If you are wondering what the use case for this app is:
When I started with Bitcoin I held my BTC and other crypto on a paper wallet. Since you shouldn't store your paper wallet on your PC, I needed a way to easily scan the address and view the funds, without having to import the Private Key itself, since this would compromise the security of the wallet. So I developed an app to do just that. You can scan your address with your camera and instantly see the funds in BTC, USD and EUR.
I have bought a ledger now and with the app I don't have to connect the ledger to my PC to see the funds, which also saves a lot of time.
A second use case is for all the curious people out there. If you happen to see a crypto QR code somewhere outside and wonder much money there is on that address, you can quickly scan the QR code and find out.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Invest on NEO ? on: May 22, 2018, 09:32:15 PM
I also hold some NEO and I believe in the project. However, I feel like the cons aren't mentioned too much in this thread, so I will focus on some.
My first issue with NEO is that it is based in China. It really is a double-edged sword. On the one hand China could push NEO's adoption and development, on the other hand, China could force NEO into centralization.
This is actually my 2nd issue with NEO: There are only 13 Nodes in the NEO network. The number of nodes is promised to get higher in 2018, but this has not happened yet (correct me if I'm wrong). This leads to major centralization.
My third point of concern is the network outage in 2017. This shows some major flaws in the NEO organization, as a network outage is unacceptable, especially in cryptocurrencies.

As I said, I also hold some NEO and I'm optimistic on the future it, but we have to keep in mind that there are also major flaws in the system.

I do not have answers to all your questions, but this new video from Andreas Antonopoulos explains at least your first 3 questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=strhfzJ56QE
Hope it helps Smiley
13  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Question about LN routing at 1 Million TPS on: May 21, 2018, 01:08:24 PM
This is certainly possible, but I doubt it would be likely or really that big of an issue.

In the event that this happens, the node which has the problem will send an error back to the origin node and then the HTLCs will fail and be removed from the commitment transactions. Then the node will choose a different route and try the payment again. It's trivial to solve and not really a problem, especially with a large, well connected network.

Thank you very much for your answer Smiley
14  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Question about LN routing at 1 Million TPS on: May 20, 2018, 11:32:16 PM
Why would it? Having 1 million tps does not necessarily effect the open channels. Furthermore, calculating a path does not take all that long.

Well if we had an open channel and I transfer all my available funds in the channel to you, I wouldn't be able to transfer more funds to you so that path would be blocked, wouldn't it?

Consequently, when a sender would use our channel as part of his route, it could have been blocked before the sender knows about it.

Is there a solution to that or do I have an error on my part here?
15  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Best place to find / post memes on: May 20, 2018, 05:20:30 PM
I love memes especially the dank ones. And when it comes to memes about crypto, I just visit "Bitcoin Expert" page on Facebook. Try ro check it out, I'm pretty sure you will relate and laugh at the same time Grin.

Going back to the topic, honestly I don't prefer to visit his website not because the quality of his memes are poor but because it's hassle to do so. I just don't like to create a new tab and open a new website in order to see memes where in the first place I can have it while browsing my news feed at the same time, I know that it sounds so lazy but that's what I'm really thinking about.

@OP - I suggest you to make a meme page on FB. Through this, I'm sure your memes can now attract likers easily and maybe goes viral, who knows?

Yeah I've already been doing this on Instagram and have 700+ followers, but it's just not the same. Maybe it will be when I get more followers. Smiley

Thanks for your opinion Smiley
16  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Best place to find / post memes on: May 20, 2018, 05:10:34 PM
Apart from the above suggestions:

1. Add the ability to edit & delete our own comments.
2. Add the ability to flag someone else's post (meme).
3. To encourage users to post original memes, you might want to consider adding an option to promote their social media accounts or their websites (ex. Add those information above each meme).

These are some great ideas! Thanks Smiley
17  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Question about LN routing at 1 Million TPS on: May 20, 2018, 02:02:09 PM
So, I have been discussing the Lightning Network and I could not counter one argument: The LN uses onion routing, so the sender has to know the exact path the transaction will go through. If the LN has 1 Million TPS isn't it likely that the available routes will have changed once the route has been calculated by the sender?

( Already posted this on /r/bitcoin https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/8khx5g/question_about_ln_routing_at_1_million_tps/ but didn't get any answers. )
18  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Best place to find / post memes on: May 20, 2018, 01:37:23 PM
Reddit of course. And Google Image too. But duplicate content will take you nowhere. Go for unique content only. Good luck!
I agree with you. It would be best if he goes for unique content because people can find these memes on other sites. The more the content is original, the more people will come to your website as it gets more famous. I am sure you are a creative person. And to be honest with you, the meme website is a great idea because people are fed up with the seriousness and they want to see something funny rather than the price drop.

Yeah, I am sure this will help me, thanks! Smiley
As my main goal with this project, I want to create a community and platform for people to find and post crypto related memes. On Reddit the memes are mixed up with serious discussions and news, but I always looked for a place to have a good laugh at some memes. Do you think there is a market / target for this niche or am I the only one that thinks this way?
19  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Best place to find / post memes on: May 19, 2018, 09:55:57 PM
I know Bitrewards project posts some good memes, you can contact them.
You're right, they do post some great memes. Thank you
20  Bitcoin / Project Development / Best place to find / post memes on: May 19, 2018, 08:38:19 PM
I have developed a website for Bitcoin and other crypto memes: https://coinhumor.com/

I would appreciate everyone signing up and posting or commenting on memes! If anything doesn't work, let me know about it and I will fix it as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to seeing your posts on my site!

Greetings!
